Here is my take -- last night we came up to episode 90 in our second viewing of the show -- I realized that I was way too stressed out to pay attention to the "character development" etc etc when I was watching it the first time (even though I assumed I was already doing it right). The second time I am watching it, I am seeing more things. I think the "REDEMPTION" stuff is absolutely REQUIRED.
1. Aukaad Stuff -- may be I am looking at it as a man -- when someone repeatedly does that crap and you cant give it back because of your constraints, it is HELL -- Khushi acted like "the man of the family" to take crap but not let go of the opportunity to make some money for her lower middle class family.
2. The number of times he made her CRY till episode 80 was down-right CRUEL -- the writers were showing cruelty may be for effect but it was cruelty more than his anger.
3. I realized that the writers were setting things up to show that may be his "parents" died because his father had an affair of sorts with a economically poor woman and it came out around the time of his sister's first wedding. THe wedding got ruined (they mention Anjali's baraat returning several times) and he lost his mom. If you notice when he talks about his parents, he spends more time talking about his MOM leaving him more than his father. They may be thinking this stuff may justify what he did to Khushi but it does not. Also, I think Shyam may be shown as the guy responsible for Anjali's let injury and then playing the role of the "savior" because when they show the early videos of Di and CHote, they are both fine -- unless POLIO hits girls in their "teens" this is something that was caused after her first marriage got ruined -- they are planning on using that sometime -- but it is already getting late with this crap for 2 months killing interest.
4. THe redemption track should be more him "EXPLAINING" himself and lack of malice in his attacks and just his "stupid anger" -- which is a long shot already.
5. Then there is this assumption crap after falling in LOVE -- this is the fundamental goof-up. See if the guy was in love, this "distrust" is completely stupid -- he doesnt understand the meaning of love. If you are in love with someone, the first thing that comes is "trust and belief" in their character -- otherwise it is infatuation. The chick is pretty but to show that he is cringing at the very thought of her crying and then saying "I dont believe you when you say that you werent sleeping with Shyam before" -- it is nonsensical really.
6. The second viewing gave me the distinct feeling that after around the time he starts seeing her constantly -- that is when she shows up for the Anjali Salgira party and hides in his closet, he was blaming her for not accepting the truth that "she is in love with him" and was attacking her constantly to break her down. I dont know if they were showing that he is stupid enough to intimidate his way into the heart of the woman he is in love with but that is the distinct feeling I got especially when he brings Lavanya back because she yells at him about the "LOVE" thing.
So, In a way the Redemption I think is more of a complete explanation so they get in sync. They already laid foundation to that stuff by showing ASR forgiving Hari Prakash for spilling coffee on him the day after the Shrardh. See this is where some consistency in his character is needed -- they can get away with anything with Khushi -- she is a wild card and set up perfectly for day-to-day stuff -- but when it comes to ASR character -- they can do better in making it more consistent -- for now is looks like a nasracistic mental guy who is begining to realize that he is in love with this girl and still doesnt understand LOVE. He shows strong emotions when under the influence on Bhang but cannot come out and discuss things with his LOVE!!! Strange but really a MENTAL character than a stubborn angry young man that they want to show.
This is my take after second viewing of the first 90 episodes. Sometimes I am asking myself these days "am I working for these guys?? why the heck am I analyzing this sh*t (excuse my french) to the extent I am!!!" THey are not real people for god's sake -- a difficult thing to swallow -- for me they are becoming real living people -- Fantastic job by the directors and creative team for accomplishing that.
Cheers..
