An average episode...sadly PH proved my fear right today...Khushi dreaming of Arnav as lover boy- uske character ki toh vaat lag gayi.
Yesterday while I understood the disappointment of Tanthya and Doods, I liked his confession. I can somehow understand the pressure PH is under but more on that at the end.
I did feel Arnav wanted to give everyone what he believed he owed them since his future seems unsure and more than anything he believed Khushi deserved to know his heart and so he confessed. In some ways it also a way to lighten his heart since he has always felt guilty for mistreating Khushi despite believing she deserves it. He probably also wanted to a response from her- something that would tell him that she felt the same. I am not sure if he was able to decode Khushi's tears and silence today, he seemed a little disappointed. Did he still believe that Khushi does not love him and has some residual feelings for Shyam? Did he hate his weakness to come out and say it out loud and not hear anything back? Did he regret that he had to confess the way he did under the circumstances and he would probably never see her agin? I was left confused even more since the words "Kyun dard itna.." played in BG when the camera zoomed in on his face. I was also right in my assumption that Khushi will find his behaviour odd and go into detective mode. I loved the flashbacks today, instinctively Khushi would be reminded of all the times that Arnav threw a clue about his feelings her way and she missed them. I was hoping that she would start to clue in now and that would give her an insight into Arnav's hot and cold behaviour thus taking the story forward.
That expectation stayed until we started having the pearl necklace sequence and running around the pool...what was that? It seemed too cheesy and definately something targeted at fangirls. That was the Satyanash moment for me.So much potential in the story and we end up seeing pre-adolescent version of romance. Someone kill me!
Now coming back to PH- These guys really seem to have a bad string of luck. Thier show balances itself on the shoulders of three characters- Arnav, Khushi and Anjali and all three actors that play these characters have either signed up for other projects or are threatening to leave (assuming rumours are true). Infact this is the only time that I have heard a PH dealing with a crisis like this. If an actor had pulled something similar on balaji productions, he would have commited professional suicide. I commend the PH for trying to do right by the actor and get some free moolah in the deal but unfortunately thier largese/adjustment seems to have come back to bite them.
Unlike other shows this is a love story and not a family drama so the PH did not flesh out other characters as much and with good reason. Now they are left scrambling , trying to figure how to proceed while the channel is playing the TRP game with them.To top it all, media and certain other PH and 4 lions (read- Barun's movie PH) have kept the uncertainty on the sets in media to create free publicity and paranoia. However this has hurt the show more than anything, any interview from Barun has been dissected minutely and masses with that information have reacted on it. Maybe this will tell the actors the price of fame and the virtue of keeping quiet and letting the storm blow over.
So what does PH do now-
1) Gracefully end the show but why would they...they can still milk this cow. Besides what is the point of letting 11 months of work go down the drain.
2) Introduce the possibility of replacing the actors playing the characters if need occurs, however it would not work since they spent last 11 months building the relationship between the actor and character so much that masses tend to see them as one. It will be hard to accept an another actor playing any of 3 main roles. Barun was right when he said that anybody could play Arnav since the true hero of story is Arnav the character and not Barun. But that ship has sailed...no one will be accepted as Arnav now. Masses see Barun more as Arnav than his real life persona.
3) Introduce new character- They tried this but it did not work partly because I think that they went OTT with the characters. Introducing a business rival, someone from Khushi's past etc would have probably worked better...just saying! On the other hand you have to start to flesh out a new character and give him time to establish rapport with masses and with current hysteria, no one wants to give a new character a chance...everyone is focused on how long Barun will stick it out.
4) Introduce parallel romance track- Payash will not work since thier characters have not been set that way. They have been set as insipid couple. That leaves Anjali and I strongly believe there is immense potential there. IPKKND is also the story of Raizada siblings. But for that to happen Shyam has to be kicked out and a new heart-throb has to be introduced who deals with Anjali's eccentricities and fears. Given time we might see arshi like popularity for the new couple too but then time is exactly what PH does not have. We might still come back to this at some point.
4) Stick with thier story and hope everything works out despite popular opinions and falling TRPS.. They are a small PH and the financial risk they bear is too big to ignore. They need to succeed to survive and for that they need the show to survive but for that to happen, they need TRP and for that they need fangurls who are demanding romance so we end up with ridiculous version of story which puts off more mature demographic. This is what I believe PH has decided to do under duress much to my disappointment.
But the fact remains that PH are in bad place and they truly do not have many options until the hysteria dies.
