Part 2: From Memorable Evening To Never Ending Nightmare Part (a)

Anjali for a moment stood there among her husband friends not knowing what to do. They all seemed to checking her out or appraising her which made her uncomfortable. "Hmmm so where did you meet our Shyam" asked one girl. "Erm…well I actually met him outside a temple, on Shivrathri" she said smiling, "He was doing offering food for the unprivileged" Anjali said with smile thinking of pre marriage days and on how lucky she was to get Shyam as her husband. "So you realised he is good catch…..sorry I mean did you fall in love with him at first sight it self???" Anjali's smile faltered, totally unsure of what to say, "Excuse me" she said and tried to extricate herself from that crowd and precisely at that moment Shyam came, "Rani Sahiba, what happened why do you look so pale" he asked concerned. Then he turned to his friends "Hope you are not trying to bad mouth me as you are jealous of me, No luck guys, Rani Sahiba is all mine" he said proudly holding Anjali by waist.

A warm glow settled on Anjali face and she looked up at Shyam with ardent devotion. She remembered how she had seen him a couple of times in the temple and one day when she had gone to a charitable trust she had seen him doing voluntary work there. Slowly she came to know more about him and thus their marriage happened.

Her Chotey the ever protective one for her had first objected but then he saw how Shyam had charmed his way into Naniji, Mamaji and Mamiji's heart and so had decided to give his nod though reluctantly, with his condition that Anjali would be staying Shantivan after marriage and Shyam will have to join her here rather than they both going away to live alone as Shyam had no parents or relatives and was essentially a loner. Shyam had graciously agreed and later said he did it only for her happiness!!! He always said she was his queen and called her Rani Sahiba irrespective of the place or the public presence. She was embarrassed initially, but subconsciously she was very pleased with all the pampering and attention she was receiving and always wanted him to be with her. She was always plagued with the fear that Shyam would feel she was not good enough for him and did every thing to please him. He on the other hand showered lavish attention on her.

Her train of thought were broken when she heard his friends telling, "so tell us about your love story Shyam". Anjali once again became a bit uncomfortable…she feared what if they told him she was not good enough for him…and tried to move away from the scenario!!! She smiled at Shyam and said "Let me look for Lavanya and Chotey, their press meet would have been over by now" she turned to his friends and said "Please enjoy the evening and do have dinner before you leave" and she moved away from them.

She went towards Arnav, "Chotey, is the press meet over. Where is Lavanya!!!" she asked!!!

"Di, Lavanya is somewhere with office staff and meeting her friends." Arnav answered and added "Di! Don't tire yourself, just sit here things are fine" at that Anjali giggled and answered "how can I not be Chotey, it's your engagement…and hope at least now you lose anger, now that you are in love" "There is nothing called love di, its all false, the world runs in good business deals" thought Arnav. This deal of the friendship cum partnership will help both of us.

He turned and walked towards Lavanya who was chatting with a couple of models who had worked for AR group. When Samantha one of the models looked at approaching Arnav and said "ASR! This is not fair you told me you were about open to marriage….else I would never let Lavanya take that place just imagine how sweet we both would look together!!!" Samantha gushed. Lavanya who was bit annoyed with open flirting decided to snap back as ASR was now officially her fianc so she said with a fake smile "Sam, what to do!!!! You are too sweet; probably something sweet isn't what he wants!" She turned to Arnav and said "ASR I need to discuss with you regarding our Marriage plans" and steered him away.

Arnav accompanied Lavanya and went to the room nearby, "Lavanya, please do not trouble me with shopping or anything relating to marriage you know how I am not the person for it, anything you decide is ok with me, just make sure that the arrangements are OK with di and of course where ever you guys shop take the car, I don't want di to tire herself out and La…" Arnav paused looking at strange expression Lavanya had, "Lavanya are you alright!!!!" Lavanya immediately gathered her wits and said' "of course ASR, don't worry I will handle everything". Then Lavanya hesitated a bit and then continued, "ASR, I know you don't want to get married right now or ever for that matter, and all this is for your Di but would you just mind giving our relationship a shot." Arnav now snapped at her "Lavnaya what s wrong with you we were done with discussing all these thing way back right? A relationship is just burden, there nothing called Love OK…it happens only in stupid films you watch and the books you read." Lavanya eyes were now glistening with tears and she moved ahead to touch his shoulders and then leave the room as she couldn't bear to hear more. Arnav who however was not facing Lavanya now continued, "There is nothing called love and even if there is, it is weakness Lavanya, you are such talented and intelligent and strong girl why would you fall for such weakness tell me"

When he turned around he realised that Lavanya was now crying profusely. "Oh s***" he said and immediately went near Lavanya .But Lavanya immediately collected herself and held her hands up and said "No ASR, I am alright!!!" she gulped and then continued "ASR I will not force you change you opinion as I do not believe in forcing someone and even otherwise I do not think any one can ever force you to change your opinion!!!" She paused for moment and drank some water from a glass nearby. "ASR, all I ask is normal cordial relationship and care just like you would care anybody who is family, is it too much to ask" Lavanya asked him. Arnav who was already guilty at having hurt her thought she doesn't deserves this, if not for her, I never would have managed in the college or got that job with her father. She may not be directly responsible for my growth but sure is one solid reason for my growth and she herself as person is any man dream with good looks, charming personality and confidence. Moreover she is talented in her own way in designing. She is important to AR industries. Arnav cleared his throat and said. "Lavanya sorry my intention was not spoil your mood especially when you are so excited about it but I do not want you to have nay false hopes." he looked at Lavanya when she remained quite he continued, "see, you know what I feel about you right you are really a very talented person and extremely good looking and you have pulled me out to tight spots more than once so I do owe it you, I assure you that I will try my best to keep you happy and yes, you definitely are part of my family and so you will have your right and importance in it".

Lavanya now much more composed and seeing more of what ASR is said, "ASR see I really admire you for your talent and the way you have come a long way from what I saw during college days even those days you determination and passion for success only made me introduce you to my dad, so let me put it straight I just don't want you marry me just as part of the business deal and expect a bit more than that, you cannot love me or you do not believe in love is your own set or beliefs, but I want you to value our relationship at least to the level of friendship or companionship" finished Lavanya. Arnav now snapped, "Lavanya…" when suddenly there was lot of commotion out side. Hari Prakash came there and knocked on the door loudly!!!

Meanwhile here Anjali smiled as she saw her Chotey nod at her and then go to Lavanya. "I am so happy the Chotey had decided to marry." She thought of Naniji, Mamji and Mamaiji and Aaksh, wish they were all her today, but then a very urgent trip was required by them, moreover Naniji wanted to visit some temple in Lucknow, now that her Chotey had decided to get married.

Naniji at first has been reluctant when Mr Kashyap bought up the alliance as she would have preferred a Lucknowi girl for her grandson. But then after seeing Lavanya, she had to agree as she seemed to one person whom her grandson really liked and respected and he seems to entrust her with lot of office work which means he trusted Lavanya and trust was always a very important part in relationship for her.

Anjali's train of thought were broken when she heard a very rude giggle and she stopped in her tracks. Now who is this she thought and then she head one voice "did you look at her…so behenji type she is…and hey actually our Shyam is so brilliant he should have married some good lawyer and both of them together can set up firm…dunno what made him marry this girl", then the same giggle was heard "Dunno, money I reckon….but what beats me is he never seemed to be man behind money and else all he need to have done is married that girl in Uni who was always behind him and set up law firm…I have heard that the girls dad offered him that". "Yeah he should have done that …look at this girl she is not even modern looks a typical Saas bahu serial material!!!" at this another girly voice giggled and said "and hey guys, I know who she is she is Anjlai Malik, and her marriage was broken once before…dunno what was reason…guess we should tell Shyam about that and tell him to get rid of her at the earliest!!!"

Anajli stood there frozen for minute…she did not know what to do and was shocked. She wanted to shout to them he loves me and I am better than you gossip mongers and home wreckers. She wanted to tell Shyam. When suddenly she heard Shyam behind her, he came and hugged her from behind oblivious to her state he said "I am so happy you have taken care of my friends, they are very important to me and I value them a lot I am sure they would be very happy that I married you….did you see them?" Anjali pointed in their direction totally expressionless and when Shyam moved towards them she fled away.

Suddenly a nasty voice inside her spoke and how would you do that …who are you…you are just an unlucky girl Anjali, your mother committed suicide, your first marriage was broken and you are not even worth of any man…..and no idea what more you will bring to you husband…He deserves much better." Anjali closed her ears tightly but eh nasty little voice kept pounding her head and she rushed out and went to Kitchen…from there she picked a knife and slashed one of her palms hoping the pain will quieten the nasty voice. Soon Hari Prakash entered there and saw the blood. "Anajli didi what happened" he said looking shocked, and rushed to help her. "Just leave me alone and tell my husband that I will never interfere in his life and that his friends are right, will you?" Anjali said in hysterical voice and rushed out. Hari Prakash ran after her and caught up with her but she pushed him away with sudden strength as if Devil had possessed her and ran our shouting, "Tell him that I am not good enough to live and so I am going to disappear of the face of earth."

Anjali almost ran out and then climbed into the car. Luckily for her key was in the ignition.

She muttered to herself everybody will be Ok if I am gone. He would be happy…and chotey would cry but now he has Lavanya so he would forget me!!! and drove on.

Hari Prakash immediately rushed to look for Arnav and knocked on the door to the room where a few of the guests whom he enquired and said he had gone to.

He literally banged on the door and Arnav opened it looking annoyed. Not knowing how to phrase a sentence no he said," erm eh di had cut her hands and she has taken her car and gone away…"

"What?" Arnav asked, "Who? di why and where…what happened did anybody say anything to her and why didn't you stop her damn it!!!! He asked now the full wrath unleashing on the poor HP."

By then Lavanya came up and stood beside him and as she listened and she suddenly felt a premonition something big was about to happen but braced herself and then put a hand on Arnav's hand and said, "Arnav relax!!!! What the use of shouting at him" "Lavanya" Arnav said "Di has disappeared and you want me to relax" he turned to HP and was about to say something when Lavanya again interrupted, "yes ASR, relax think and try to find di, it no use shouting at him". Before she could finish, Arnav had almost flew done to door and then clutched the door and closed his eyes for moment, "Di! Why did you do this Di!!!! Why do you have to do this" and then opened the door went straight to his car and drove like mad.

Lavanya, here on the other hand went up and told her father. Mr Kashyap on hearing it immediately decided to tell the commissioner the police but Lavanya requested him to wait at least for sometime "who knows she could be found by ASR, so why create unnecessary hype!!!" He decided to just wait and watch when he saw Shyam extricating himself from his friends and then coming towards him. He immediately beckoned Shyam and told him what ever happened. Shyam seemed heart broken on hearing it…but didn't know what to do and then he passed out. So Mr Kashyap just decided to stay with him.

"Strange The man just passes out!!!! He should have gone out to search her by now!!!" Thought Mr Kashyap.

On the other hand here Anjali was recklessly speeding away in her car with voices of Shyam's friends and that nasty voice from inside her head mocking at her. Suddenly she saw her mother beside her "Ma" and her mother just kept mum. "Mama" she called once again when suddenly it changed to her father's image and he smiled at her. "Papa" she wailed and then it changed to her Chachaji image came and said "Anju baby…come here!!!" she was totally scared now and while pressing the accelerator she frantically tied to open her door and then everything blacked out

Here Arnav was frantically searching in his car with no idea where to search and then impulse he started trying some the temples where he used to take his sister. "Di, where are you…..are you also going to go like ma!!!"

Khushi sat in her car her legs curled and thinking of the event which culminated in her leaving the house….but she was happy this happened as it gave her opportunity to show that she has become someone in her life not just Gupta family's daughter or even so and so wife, but then an individual as Khushi Kumari Gupta!!!

She thought of how her Jiji was excited about the marriage….Khushi sighed when she realised that Payal seems to preferring to stay in her comfort zone more while Khushi always was ready to take risk and venture the unknown she believed even if you get hurt in the process it was worth it ant it was just Devi Maiyya's way of testing her strength. Khushi recollected on how all was well till engagement and how after that her to be Jeejaji and had one day come to her meet her father and asked for a surety signature for nearly a million that he has borrowed to set up business and he had also assured that he repay the loan in an year. He said he wanted to marry Payal as business-man rather as the small time employee he was now. Khushi had been proud of her Jeejaji then and asked her babuji to go ahead and sign the bank papers. Alas Khushi had been wrong about her Jeejaji.

She got the first shock of her life when one day she had gone to visit one of her professors and on the way she had seen him in the car that too with another woman. The worst part was that the lady surely looked like……well some one Khushi couldn't even dare describe or look at and they both were coming out of hospital. She immediately wanted to confront him but then she just let suspicious brain a rest and decided to ignore it. Now when she thought back about it realise how wrong she was in ignoring that fact even temporarily.

A few days later day her Babuji has returned home very tensed and during the night he seemed to sleepless. And she found that her Jee…no that man, that evil man…he had not only lost the Million for her which her father signed surety but had requested her babuji to give another million as help and her father had gone ahead and done that by pawning his shop. Now Khushi opened up and told him what she saw the other day outside the hospital and told her father to make sure of things before proceeding but her father shrugged it off moreover her Amma and Buaji had felt that Khushi was just imagining things.

Khushi decided to prove herself right and set out to find out all the details regarding her that man…she knew she had to do it fast as the marriage was in another two days. She successfully collected many things about him and soon found out that there was no business he was investing in and still worse was the fact that he was a totally immoral person as she went to enquire into the hospital and realised he had come with that girl so that she could undertake an abortion and horror of horrors he himself was HIV positive.

Gathering up all the evidence as she rushed home…..but she was kidnapped probably by him and locked up. By the time she escaped and wedding preparation was well in progress.

She had hoped the there would have been no arrangement as she was missing but then sadly Buaji and Amma had gone ahead with the wedding preparations and had made only lame attempts to find where she was, they had assumed that she had gone on with some friends or so and will return by the day of wedding!!

Ignoring them she rushed and revealed everything to Payal and along with her planned a public revelation and also convinced Payal to speak up at the hall in front of everyone when Khushi planned to confront that man and his good for nothing family. And when they came with wedding procession Khushi had stopped them at the entrance and in front of everyone confronted the family and that man. She pulled out Payal and asked her to speak up, but to her shock Payal remained mum and the blame fell on her for not telling it earlier and her claims of being kidnapped fell on deaf ears. She was blamed for not having revealed it earlier and playing about with her sister life. Moreover with the broken marriage…the money was also not retuned so obviously the shop was out of their hands. It was then that Khushi decided to leave this place at least to take a break from the confines of home. She was sick of people talking and unnecessarily poking their nose in the family affairs and had enough of her mother sending her on a guilt trip. How much ever she loved her family she felt being away form her mother would give her mother some breathing space and probably even Payal would realise the need to stand up for herself!!! Khushi was a psychology student and from one of her friends she came to know about need for interns in voluntary rehabilitation centre cum mental asylum in Delhi and she decided to go and work their and gain practical experience there.

Her thoughts came to a halt when she saw a car crashed to a road side lamp post. She said the driver "Driver please stop the vehicle!!" and as soon her car stopped. She looked up and down the deserted rode and went up to the car.

Arnav was still riding recklessly and going from temple to temple when Lavanya called. "ASR," she immediately came to the point, "Di met with an accident and now is admitted in…" She gave him the hospital details and also told him to rush there and that assured him that she was on her way there.

Arnav pressed the accelerator till it touched floor ant after twenty minutes he reached the hospital. Lavanya and Mr Kashyap were already there and they took him to near ICU. What he saw there took away his breath. A ghost of his sister was there lying on the bed, pale and fragile with her head and hands and legs heavily bandaged and innumerable tube weaving in and out of her body.. "Di" he choked up while Lavanya tried to pat his shoulders. "ASR, the press is somehow got wind of this are going berserk. Let me go and handle them, else they print some rubbish, moreover Jeejaji, it seems he passed out so he is at home only. Dad has gone in his chopper to pick your Nani, Mama, Mamiji and Aakash" Saying this she left.

He stood alone…suddenly the terrifying nightmare came back to him. It was one fine night and he was with his di teasing her during her conversation with her beau. And suddenly they heard raised voices and both of them rushed out to see that their mom rushed out of the room and she ran straight outside took a car and drove off. Hour later news came that she had crashed into a lorry and when taken to hospital they realised that she had already slashed her wrists too and thus lost a lot of blood, she died that day and with that their happiness.

"Di" he whispered and fell down on is knees. "Di don't leave me" he cried. "Nothing will happen to your Di…she is safe and out of danger" he heard a very soothing and reassuring voice. He looked up and wondered if he and his di both have died and were in some heaven. Some one with a very pristine face and very soothing voice was speaking to him. "Who are …how do you *gulp* I want doctor or ….and please can you?" he blabbered.

Khushi saw a man standing and banging near the ICU…probably the lady's husband…but when she came near she realised he looked much younger and soon heard him wispher "Di". She went near him to calm him down and assure him and when he looked at her…a strange feeling protectiveness over took her ….hi eyes were so deep that one can forever be lost in it. She could see pain, vulnerability and loads and loads of hurt and disappointment in his eyes. She hesitated for moment and touched his shoulders, "Why don't you sit there she said pointing to couch. She is under observation and mostly out of danger and the doctors are help up in another accident case. They will be here anytime an emergency arises which is hardly likely". He just gave shrug and gave a half nod. The he went and sat there and kept his hands on his heads and looked totally devastated. Khushi looked at him. She had this urge to ease away all his pains if she could. She hesitantly walked up to him and sat by him.

After a moment silence Khushi said," you know Devi Maiyya at times test our trust by putting us thorough intense pain…we have to be strong" On listening to this Arnav snapped "I don't believe in god!!!! He is not there for all I care!!" Khushi was surprised at the pessimism but let it pass and just said, "Your Di will be alright!!!! I am very sure."

Arnav just nodded and then sat there without saying anything and Khushi sat near him feeling that he needed her and his sister who was inside needed her and sat there without saying anything. Suddenly something heavy brushed against her arms and she realised that the man was probably exhausted. She hesitated for a moment and then gingerly moved next to him and when his head drooped again, she held it for moment ever so tenderly and then placed it in her lap.

Arnav did not protest or move his head hit a soft lap reminding him of his mother's lap eh felt surprisingly calm expression and then a soothing touch on his head lulled him into sleep and he slept like a child.

Khushi stared at him for a long time with small smile on her lips saw him sleeping and slowly she tilted her head on the couch's headrest and slept of herself.

PS: Guys please note that when Arnav first saw and mistook Khushi for angel…it was because of the state of his mind and no romantic inclination was intended at such serious moment!!!!
