HI guys, absolutley loved the episode but one question came to mind that keeps bothering me. The raizada and gupta are so conservative-I mean they couln't have a cocktail party at their house but it is ok to have marijuana and get high on that in public??? I mean everyone was pretty wasted today. I am sorry but this makes absolutely no sense what so ever to me. Not only this show, but all the serials are showing characters drinking bhang ( bascially marijuana) from what I understand. I don't know, just feel like it is wrong even if it is an old tradition. What do you guys think? Would love to hear from you and especially if you have any experience drinking it:)

I am really glad you opened this topic. I completely agree with you. Its a shame!
But in this case they are using the Bhang as a plot device. Although they are glamorizing it by showing it in such a positive light.

Cannabis ( ganja) or marijuana are linked to Hindi Gods and are allowable to consume during certain religious festivals . Sadhus and holy men in India regularly smoke cannabis .
It is just part of the culture .

Yeah I was thinking about that too but I thought maybe there was a religious significance to it that made it ok? For example, I was reading an article about how there is a holiday/festival for Hesidic (orthodox) Jewish men where they spend one sunset to the next drinking this special wine (and consequently getting completely trashed). It has a religious significance and drinking alcohol is only allowed in this once instance. They won't drink it on any other day, time, etc. The article is http://www.cracked.com/article_19322_6-insane-holidays-youll-wish-you-celebrated.html">here , See: #4 (I know it's a comedy website but my brother, Mohammed, writes for it and the research for it is pretty intense. He just published an article earlier this week that took him a year to research and get accepted. BTW, I don't want to get in trouble about pasting links to other sites here, Mods, but to bring it back to IPKKND, the Raizada family is pretty religious. They wouldn't just drink bhaang cus all the cool kids are doing it. So let's just say that there's a reason behind it we just don't know about but it keeps them in character.

At a very basic level, if one looks at it, it does seem like double standards with alcohol getting the step motherly treatment... but when you consider that bhaang has religious and social sanction... it is an integral part of Hindu culture... and if I'm not mistaken, linked to Lord Shiva... a lot of ascetics/ sanyasis consume cannabis...

Hence the distinction between the two... so no hypocrisy as such.
Haven't had bhaang really but I've tried marijuana (weed) once and I don't see anything wrong in it. It's just like any other intoxicant - in fact you don't necessarily get high with just one puff or one sip.. and I think one needs to be really really high to behave like they show on telly or movies. Call it creative license... but their behaviour is a bit exaggerated 😉

I do know one guy from college who smoked weed and went around campus looking for his room not realizing he'd passed it 6 times!!! 😆
Between smoking tobacco and smoking weed... I'd choose the latter! Only it's illegal in most places.. except of course the Netherlands. And of course, when it comes to alcohol - I don't see why not... as long as one drinks in moderation and responsibly!

Bhang and Marijuana are 2 different things.
Marijuana is a drug and cannibas are not considered a drug, but a traditional sleeping aid and appetizer. (wiki meaning)
That is the difference man.

They are both prepared from species of cannabis i.e. dried flowers and leaves of the plant. Wiki differentiates between cannabis indica for bhang prepartions and cannabis sativa for marijuana.

And then states the difference as below:

Difference between Cannabis indica and sativa

Cannab2 new.png

A Cannabis sativa plant may have a CBD/THC ratio 4:-5 times that of Cannabis indica. Cannabis with relatively high ratios of CBD:THC is less likely to induce anxiety than vice versa. This might partial be due to CBD's antagonist effects at the cannabinoid receptor, compared to THC's partial agonist effect. [4]The relatively large amount of CBD contained in Cannabis sativa, means, compared to an indica, the effects are modulated significantly. The effects of Sativa are well known for its cerebral high, hence used daytime as medical cannabis, while Indica are well known for its sedative effects and prefered night time as medical cannabis

So it means they are kind of the same thing. I guess that what I am trying get as that just because something is a tradition doesn't mean that it is right😊 I mean I know that sadhus etc may be using because it has been done for many thousands of years but I feel like you have to step back and use common sense and be like no it is wrong and really pretty much like any other drug (alcohol, ocaine, etc) where you are in a state where you don't have full control of your faculties. I am just saying that all these dramas shouldn't overly glorify it. Some dramas are not taking a stance and saying how fire crackers etc are dangerous maybe they can take a stand on this issue. I know I am thinking to much into this and probably nobody cares about since we are all drooling over ASR but thought I would bring it up never the less. I wish I could watch the drama and stop over analyzing everything😊

Look forward to hearing what you guys think

W.r.t to the text highlighted bold... definitely. Traditions don't have to be right. Your initial post came across as more of a query trying to understand why the family was ok with bhang but not alcohol.

Have you consumed alcohol or marijuana? I have and I can vouch that neither alters one's moods as drastically as they show on TV or cinema. What is wrong is if anything is consumed excessively... yes marijuana is a banned substance because it is addictive and psychoactive... but do consider that it is prescribed in some cases... and even used in medicines.

Come to think of it, cigarettes are so addictive... so are gutka and beedi... but why is no one banning tobacco? That's cos the tobacco lobby is too strong - there is so much money riding on tobacco that no government has banned it.

And I will repeat here... neither alcohol nor marijuana when consumed in moderation will cause the problems that smoking does... if at all, I think this is where the hypocrisy lies in our society.
