He slowly opened the doors of his room and stepped into semi-darkness, the only source of light coming from his bed side lamp. His throat hitched as he saw Khushi sleeping on his recliner chair, curled up into a ball.
His heart clenched as remorse finally set in. He remembered every cruel word he threw at her, words that hurt him as much as it hurt her. Their relationship was difficult, doomed from the start. But with Arnav failed relationships were always the rule rather than the exception. He knew this very well. After all he pushed away the only person who had cared enough to reach out to his cold heart. She was his guardian angel and all he did was cut off her wings.
He stepped closer and stared at the child-like goddess in front of him. He gently picked her up and laid her on his bed and brought up the covers. He went to the other side, laid down and watched her as pure anguish pulsed through his heart. He needed to hold her, needed to know that she would forgive him even if he didn't deserve it. He placed a hand on her slim waist and pulled her flush against him. He felt her stiffening in shock.
"Why didn't you tell me?" He asked in a low tone.
She tried to get up, but he tightened his grip on her, allowing her no escape.
"Arnav-ji ! What are you doing? Let me go." She said in a slightly panicked voice.
"Why didn't you tell me about Shyam" He asked, his words laced with anger for that vile man.
She stopped moving, stunned to silence. He slowly turned her, so that he could gaze in the hazel orbs that were the windows to her sole. Her face was very close to his, so close that he could feel her uneven breathe wash over his face.
"Why?" He asked again.
Silence stretched between them as the question hung like a dark cloud above their heads.
"I didn't want to hurt anybody- not you, not Anjali-di." She finally said, as her eyes brimmed with unshed tears.
He suddenly sat up, surprising her. She slowly got up as well, uncertain of his disposition as he turned the other way.
"I am not weak damn it." He finally said in a clipped voice.
"No you're not." She softly replied.
His head snapped up to hers, trying to find uncertainty in her expressive eyes. He only saw rustic honesty. He looked away again trying to curb his overflowing emotions.
Suddenly he felt her quivering hands gently cup his face and forced him to look into her eyes. She leaned in and hugged him tightly. He was shocked beyond words. Every rational thought left him as he wrapped his hands around her and held her tightly against his chest.
Perhaps she would never forgive him, perhaps one day she too would leave him like his mother, but for this moment she was his and that's all that mattered.
