Good question. That is why I feel they deliberately brought in his misunderstanding of Khushi. So he will be marrying Khushi not to keep Shyam away from Khushi but Khushi away from Shyam. It was clear from the terrace scene, Khushi will settle for nothing less than a marriage. So he will 'deprive Khushi that freedom to marry the man of her choice.
