The Colour of Mehendi...
Aastha woke up. Today was the day... the "Sweekruti Samaaroh". Aastha was excited. She remembered the lady's words who had come to apply mehendi on her hands... "Mehendi ka rang jitna achha rachta hai, utnahi tumhaara pati tumse pyaar karta hai...!" Aastha quickly checked her hands to see the colour of mehendi. She was shocked...!! The colour of mehendi was very light. She didn't understand. She became restless. "Yeh rang itna pheeka kaise ho gaya?" She felt like crying. "Ab main kya karun?" She just wished that somehow the colour became dark. But that wasn't possible. "Doesn't Shlok love me?!!" she was talking to herself. "No this can't be...!! I know he loves me...!! But then this mehendi...? Why is it so light? Does it really mean anything? Nahi aisa nahi ho sakta...!!" Aastha was scared.
She heard a laughter... the same evil laughter that had once shattered her... broken her heart into pieces. She saw Shlok standing beside. Making a sad face, he said, "Awww... Kya hua? Mehendi ka rang pheeka pad gaya... Bechaari Aastha... I am so sorry..." and again his monstrous laugh. He held her arms roughly, hurting her... "Tumhein kya laga, haan? What did you think? That I love you?!" he smirked. "Huh!! Pyaar... aur tumse?!!" He pushed her away with force and left. Aastha couldn't believe it. She was shocked. All this was happening again. History was repeating itself. She saw Shlok walking away. "Shlok...!!!" she called out to him, crying. But he didn't return.
"Shlokkk!!" Aastha screamed suddenly waking up. Shlok got up hearing Aastha's scream. "Aastha... kya hua?" he asked. What happened? Aastha was sitting on the sofa crying. She seemed scared. Shlok guessed she might have had a bad dream. It was dark. He checked the time on his mobile screen... 4:20 am. Shlok got up and went near Aastha. She was still scared. She was still not completely out of her dream. Shlok placed his hand on her shoulder, "Aastha, are you okay?"
"Shlok...!!" Aastha hugged him and held him tight without saying anything. Shlok hugged her back. She was still scared. She was crying. "Shlok..." she whispered as she tightened her grip around him. Shlok caressed her. "Aastha... Shhh... Chup ho jaao... Kuchh nahi hua hai... Just relax... It was just a dream..." Shlok tried to relax her. She calmed down. Shlok held her by her arms... "Are you alright?" Aastha nodded. She was about to wipe her tears with her hands when she remembered that her hands had mehendi on them. "Mehendi...!!" she thought. She couldn't see the colour of her mehendi in the darkness. "Shlok!! Jaldi light lagaayiye!! Please... put on the lights... now!!" Shlok didn't understand the reason. But he followed her words. And in the light, Aastha could see the lovely colour of mehendi on her hands. She was relieved, she was pleased. She heaved a sigh of relief. Shlok was confused.
"Waise, aisa kya dekha tum ne sapne mein ki tum itna darr gayi?!!" asked Shlok. What was there in the dream that scared you so much?!!
Aastha became sad remembering the nightmare. She told him, "Meri mehendi ka rang bohot pheeka tha... I couldn't believe that the colour of my mehendi was so light... I couldn't believe that you didn't love me..." Aastha became breathless as she spoke. "You were there... aap thay wahan...!! Lekin..."
"What?!!!" Shlok patted on his forehead in disappointment. "You were scared because of the faded colour of your mehendi...?!!" He was angry as well as amused. He laughed. "Kya Aastha...?! This colour of mehendi doesn't mean anything...! I didn't know you believe in all this rubbish...!!" he said laughing.
"Karna padta hai Shlok, vishwaas karna padta hai..." said Aastha with a serious smile. "When we are left with no other choice, we begin believing in such things...! You haven't gone through anything like this... You wont understand...!" she said.
Shlok still thought it was funny... "Aastha, I don't believe..." he laughed. "The colour of your mehendi will decide how much I love you?!!" He laughed again. "And you believe in it?!"
"Aap kuchh kehte nahi hain... You are not ready to say it... You are not ready to express it in words... How will I know then?" complained Aastha.
Shlok looked at Aastha and she stared back. Shlok came closer to her without breaking the eyelock. Aastha's heart was beating fast. She could feel his breath over her face. "Har baat shabdon mein kehna zaroori toh nahi hai..." he whispered. Not necessary that everything should be expressed in words...
Aastha had closed her eyes. She could feel his presence, his breath, his closeness. "Kuchh baatein kehna zaroori hota hai..." she managed to say. "Mere liye yeh jaanna bohot zaroori hai..." she whispered as he came closer.
Aastha could feel his warm breath on her ear. She clenched her fists, crumpling the dried mehendi, as her heart was thumping. He gently whispered in her ear... "Don't you know me?"
Aastha opened her eyes and Shlok was gone...! She saw him walking away. He turned back and smiled. His mischievous eyes clearly telling that he would not say it so easily, what Aastha wanted to hear. Aastha blushed. She knew he loved her... He loved her very much...!!
Aakhir Mehendi ka rang kabhi jhooth nahi bolta... The colour of mehendi never lies...
