Advay massaged his neck and waited for Veer. They were meeting at the canteen and Veer was late. He sighed, why did he have to meet a member of him team at the canteen. But Diane had insisted he met him at the canteen. Whatever, he sighed and gazed out of the glass window towards the blue sea lashing softly against the shore. He massaged his neck again, it had been a busy night. Aadi was unwell. He had sat beside him all night and cared for him, so Pooja could get some rest. Aadi was worrying him, he seemed like a happy child but he could sense that it was a faade. Something was upsetting the little boy and he was going to have to get to the bottom of it. What would he do with himself if something was to happen to him? He shuddered as the memories of the time when Aadi had slipped into coma flashed before his eyes. He had never felt so helpless in his life. But this time he had Chadnini beside him. He smiled again, reminding himself that Chandini too had sat beside him all night, holding his hand. She had eventually fallen asleep against his shoulder in the early hours of the morning. But it felt good to have her by his side. It felt good to know he was not alone any more, that he could always lean on her.
"Hi Advay,' Diane walked in and ordered herself a cup of coffee.
"Hi Diane,' He smiled and went back to gazing at the sea, "Where is your superstar?'
"He is here,' Diane said grabbing her seat beside Advay, "should be here any minute.'
"Why are we meeting here in the Canteen,' He hissed softly, "I have an office. You have an office. We have three board rooms. Surely we could meet someplace better than a canteen.'
"We are here for a reason, so please wait and watch.'
Advay sighed but gasped out loud and got up to his feet as soon as Veer entered the canteen balancing a large aluminium handi in his hand. He strode up to him to give a hand. It was heavy, what was inside it? Together they managed to place it behind the serving counter. Veer straightened his back and ran out again. Advay glanced between Diane and the door Veer had disappeared out of, but it was the aroma from the contents of the handi that made him sigh out loud. His mouth watered, what was it? Veer came back balancing another large pot, this time with the help of the security guard and placed it on the other side of the canteen. Advay watched him in awe. What was all this?
"Hello Sir...Advay.' Veer finally sat down and gulped down a large glass of water.
"What is going on?' Advay too sat down.
"Can I help myself to the food before we start?' Diane grinned sheepishly and got up to her feet.
"Khala,' Veer said, "The lamb biryani is in that corner. I left it there so it doesn't get mixed up with the vegetarian one.'
Advay eyed the pots again. Biryani, that explained the aroma. It had been a long time since he had had authentic Allahabadi biryani.
"Would you like some Sir...Advay?' He asked Advay.
"No thanks,' He snapped and gazed out of the window. Diane sat down with her heavily laden plate and tucked her fork into it. Advay licked his lips, it looked delicious, smelt divine. If only he could taste it. He could feel his stomach rumble.
"Is that all you got?' Diane asked Veer. "That won't last till lunchtime.'
"No, I left two more pots at the downstairs caf so people don't crowd the canteen.'
"Good.'
Advay finally sighed and grabbed Diane's fork and helped himself to a mouthful of the mouth-watering biryani.
"Hey that's my plate,' She yelled.
"Mmm,' Was all he said in reply pulling her plate towards him and tucking into some more of her lunch. Diane sat with her hands on her hips.
"Had we not been in the canteen, I would have smacked you Advay.' She snapped.
Advay ignored her and continued stuffing his face while Veer grinned between the two. Diane sighed and got up to her feet to get herself another plate of the delicious Biryani before it disappeared.
"Could you get me a large portion of the vegetarian one too please?' Advay commanded Veer.
"Yes Sir,' He said getting up to his feet.
Advay ate without batting an eyelid. It was delicious. The only sounds were that of his and Diane's sighs and moans every time they stuffed their mouth with the gorgeous fluffy rice cooked to perfection. Veer grinned with pride. His mother was a superstar.
Advay finally sipped on a large piping hot cup of coffee once he had eaten three plates of the lip-smacking lunch. This was one of the best biryanis he had eaten outside of Allahabad.
"I didn't realise you eat meat.' Veer said.
"I do sometimes,' Advay said wiping his mouth, "not at home though. No one in the family does. I have lived away from home for too long, so I have learnt to eat.'
"Did you like it?'
"I have had three plates, plan on having another one in ten minutes.' He smiled at Veer. "Surely that should answer your question.'
"My Ammi will be over the moon when I'll tell her that my boss liked her food.'
"Please do thank her on my behalf,' He said, "it is very kind of her.'
"She loves to cook and loves to feed people.'
Advay nodded smiling to himself. Veer's mother did sound like a lovely lady.
"Why did you bring all this food,' Advay finally asked, "Is it a special day today?'
"It's Wednesday.'
Advay frowned. It was the worst day of the week. What was it today?
"Veer brings food every Wednesday,' Diane said stuffing the last spoonful of the rice on her plate, "just so Wednesdays don't feel boring.'
Advay gasped. Every Wednesday? That was a lot of food.
"Who pays for it?'
"Veer has been paying for it, but this time I paid for it from the company expenses.'
"Since when has this been going on?'
"Three weeks now.' Veer grinned.
Advay nodded in awe. But why was he doing it?
"Why do you bring food?'
"Just to cheer everyone up,' Veer continued grinning, "Wednesdays are a boring day. I thought if I brought food in, it will just cheer people up and improve team morale.'
Advay nodded with a chuckle. It sure was a great way to cheer people up, it also meant that people didn't have to worry about preparing a lunch on a Wednesday. This was a brilliant idea. Why hadn't he thought about it?
"Veer this is very kind of you and your mother,' He said, "but we cannot expect your mother to cook for over three hundred employees every week for free, can we?'
"Hence why we are meeting today.' Diane interrupted. "Veer has a request to make.'
Advay nodded at Veer.
"Like you know my father has a catering business in Allahabad.'
"I didn't realise it is a catering business.'
"It is a sweet shop, but we cater for large events. Weddings, engagement parties, birthday parties.'
"I see.'
"My Ammi has been shuttling between Allahabad and Mumbai and my Abba is finding it difficult to manage the shop and home all by himself. He feels lonely.'
Advay sighed, he could understand. It wasn't easy living away from family.
"I suggested that he hand the shop over to one of my friends who can run it for us,' Veer continued, "and have asked him to move to Mumbai.'
"Veer's father plans on starting a catering business here in Mumbai,' Diane added, "and wants to know if we can help him in anyway.'
"Yeah sure why not?' Advay said. "Do you have anything on mind?'
"We are having the office carnival in a couple of weeks' time,' Veer said, "I was hoping if you could give us the catering contract for that event.'
"Along with a contract for lunch every Wednesday for the staff covered under company expenses.'
Advay frowned pondering on the request.
"I can bring some more samples of our food for you to try.'
"No, that's fine,' Advay said, "I have tasted the sweets from your shop when I was at Allahabad, and the Biryani today was exceptional. I can't fault it.'
"So, is it a yes then?' Diane beamed.
"Yes,' Advay said frowning at Diane, "but why are you asking me for my permission. I am sure you could have made this decision yourself.'
"I could have,' Diane said, "Didn't want people to think I am favouring Veer...But now that you have tasted it and have agreed to it, it's your decision and no one can question it.'
"Diane, your decision is my decision,' Advay said in a stern voice, "if anyone questions your decision, hand them their termination letter.'
Diane welled with tears and smiled warmly at Advay.
"I love you Advay.'
"Lucky me,' He rolled his eyes.
"Shut up.'
"So, here's the deal,' Advay looked Veer straight in the eye, "I would also like your father to handle the catering of this canteen along with the catering of the carnival.'
"Catering for the office canteen...full time.' Veer's eyes lit up. He hadn't expected it.
"Have you eaten at the canteen?' Advay sighed in disgust. "It's rubbish, bland and rubbish...and quite expensive too.'
Veer nodded grinning to himself. He couldn't wait to go home and inform him parents about the generosity of his boss.
"How soon can he start?'
"He is moving here in two weeks' time.'
"Good,' He turned his gaze towards Diane, "Please liaise with his father and organise for him to start with his from the first of next month.'
Diane nodded smiling at Veer.
"Also Veer, please provide us with a menu for the carnival along with a rough estimate.'
"I have the menu,' Diane smiled, "I have decided on what I want, I will forward it to you so you can decide the rest.'
Advay chuckled softly. Diane and her love for Indian food was legendary. He was going to have to get her to sample some of Chandini's lip-smacking food one day.
"I'll let my father know, so he can start packing.'
"Good,' Advay said, "Also Veer, we would like to have this biryani on the menu every Wednesday. I hope your mother won't mind cooking it for us.'
Veer nodded,
"No, she won't.'
"And Veer.'
"Please introduce me to your mother when she attends the carnival, I would like to personally thank her for today's lunch,'
"Sure.' Veer said, struggling to blink the tears in his eyes. He mother was going to swoon if she found out that his boss wanted to thank her in person.
"Good, so that's sorted, anything else.' Advay asked.
"Thanks Sir,' Veer grabbed Advay's hand and kissed it. "Thanks for everything.'
"Stop it,' Advay glared at him. "and Veer.'
"Yes sir.'
"If you call me Sir one more time, I will throw you out of this office.'
"No... No Si...Advay.'
"Good.' He grinned back.
"Anything else?'
"Speaking of work, Veer should have his own team by the end of next week,' Diane said, "We have a few interviews lined up early next week.'
"Good,'
"Is there anything else you want to add,' Diane asked Advay, "we have discussed everything we wanted to.'
"No...nothing...Oh yes, Veer,' Advay said getting up to his feet, "I need a large parcel of that vegetable biryani for my Chandini.'
"Sure Si...Advay... I'll have it packed for you.' Veer replied grinning from ear to ear.
Advay patted him on his back and made his way out of the canteen while Veer scrambled to his feet and began filling a large box for Chandini. Diane watched him lovingly. He was the sweetest boy she had known in the little while she had spent in Mumbai and was glad she had made acquaintance with him. He did reminded her of her son and of her favourite boss... Advay's grandfather. She smiled to herself and sighed.
