BENAAM RISHTAA

DOOSRI MULAAQAAT

1 am: Kalighati, NH 28D

The night was eerily silent and darker today since it was an Amavasya. As usual, there were no street lights and the bus carrying 50 odd passengers was passing through the dense woods of Kalighati. There was nothing except the headlights which could help the driver to decipher the way ahead. Also, the road was fairly empty at this time of night. The lights of inside the bus were off and the commuters were fast asleep. Suddenly, the bus came to screeching halt as the driver applied immediate brakes. The bus jerked and feeling the push the passengers were now wide awake. When one of them bobbed his head out, his face grew paler as he saw few thugs emerging from the forest and one of them standing exactly in front of the bus holding a pistol. The man was a constable in ATS and he quickly sent an SOS to his department citing an emergency. Entering the bus, the thugs snatched away everyone's phones and fired in air.

Thug 1 (in a threatening voice) - Chup chaap apne gehne, maal, paisa aur jitni bhi keemti cheez hai sab iss peti mei daal do. Agar koi hoshiyaari karne ki koshish ki toh ek ek ki jaan le lunga (Put all your jewellery, cash and other valuables in this suitcase without creating a fuss. Remember your oversmartness can cost you life)

**************

1:30 am, ATS Headquarters, Delhi

Officer (panicking) - Tiwari Sir, we have received an emergency call from one of our officers stating that a bus has been hijacked near Kalighati forest on NH 28D

Tiwari (in action) - Approximate distance from Delhi

Officer - Roughly 2 hours

Tiwari - Civilians?

Officer - Around 40-50

Tiwari - And hijackers?

Officer - 4

Tiwari (authoritatively) - Send an SOS to Kashyap right away

Officer (following the order) - Sir, shall we inform the nearby local police station about the incident

Tiwari (showing him a hand and saying in a relaxing tone) - No need. He is enough for all of them. Just call up and ask his aide Siddharth Ahuja to reach the place as soon as possible

2 am: Kalighati, NH 28D

The driver of the bus applied the brakes abruptly as he saw a man standing in the middle of road leaning against his bike.

Driver (looking out of the window and stammering in fear) - Kya chahiye? (What do you want?)

Man (in a raised voice) - Bike ka tyre puncture ho gaya hai. Lift chahiye (My bike's tyre is punctured. I need a lift)

The driver looked behind at the man who stood pointing a gun at him and asked for his permission. The goon nodded and the driver removing his hand out of the window signalled the man to come in. When the man moved inside the bus, he gazed back as he heard someone lock the door. When he again turned his face to find a seat for himself, one of the hijackers placed the gun right on his forehead

Goon 1 (loading his gun) - Haath upar (Hands up)

The man did as he was ordered and suddenly shoved his hand off. Bending down, he took out a knife from his socks and stabbed the man right in his heart. Taking his loaded gun, he killed the other goon standing near the driver's cabin. Hearing the screams and gunshots of the 2 men, the other 2 goons who were at the farthest end of the bus came forward and fired shots towards the man who killed their accomplice. The man ducked his head down and dodged the bullets that hit the window panes breaking it into pieces. The pieces shattered and pierced through some of the passengers hurting them. The man kicked one of the goon right below his knee with such a force that he shouted and cried holding his leg in pain. As a result, the goon dropped his gun and the man caught it. Standing up, he gave a hard punch on the goon's nose making it bleed and in no time the hijacker fell on the floor unconscious. He pulled the trigger of the pistol and emptied 4 consecutive bullets right in the last hijacker's forehead. The remaining 2 bullets were discharged on both legs of the attacker who fainted. He showed his identity card to the commuters who heaved a sigh a relief and thanked him

Man (in a loud voice) - Bus ko jald se jald khaali keejiye. Aapko sahi salaamat ghar pohchaana ab hamaari zimmedaari hai (Get out of the bus. It is our responsibility to make you reach your home safely)

The travellers emptied the bus one by one and the man scanned inside the bus for one last time. He was about to exit when his eyes caught sight of a familiar piece of fabric. Taking out his service revolver, he cautiously stepped near the backseat of the bus. When he reached, he saw some movements beneath the leather jacket. Fisting the jacket in his palms, he removed it swiftly and at the same time kept his gun on the person's forehead whose head was down and was shaking like a leaf.

Man (sternly) - Idhar dekh. Palat (Look up)

When the girl looked up, he immediately pulled away his gun.

Man (exclaiming in shock) - Tu? (You)

He was flabbergasted seeing her here; he had even wondered whether he would ever get a chance to thank her for saving him. And today again he found her though unexpectedly yet in the same state as he had seen her 4 days back; afraid, panicked and trembling in fear.

Tucking the gun at his back, he tried to gauge her confused expressions making him bewildered whether she remembered the man she helped 4 days back. He saw her narrowing her eyes as she tried to recall his face. The way she was scrutinizing his face made him question his own handsome features. Agreed that, his half face was covered with blood 4 days back when she saw but it was not that bad that he seemed unrecognizable to her today. Seconds later he saw her countenance changing from anonymity to familiarity and he heaved a sigh of relief.

Girl (in a shaky voice) - Aap...(You)

She was seated at the backseat of the bus near the window lost in her thoughts when the bus had come to a sudden halt and when her gaze fell outside the window she trembled in fear as she saw some goons attacking their bus. Sliding herself in the small space between 2 seats, she hid herself under the jacket she wore. She could hear all the chaos in the bus and just prayed that the goons shouldn't find her. And then gun shots were heard as she could somewhat decipher that some man had come to their rescue. When she felt silence prevailing in the bus, she raised up and sat on the seat. She was about to remove the jacket, when she felt someone removing it harshly and pointing a gun at her. When she turned her face to look at the man, she felt as if she had seen him before. Racking her brain hard to identify the man, she finally succeeded as the realisation seeped in that he was the officer she encountered 4 days back.

Man (softly) - Ghabraa mat. Kuch nhi hua hai. Theek hai tu. Mera haath pakad aur chal (Don't be scared. Nothing has happened. You are alright. Hold my hand and come)

Pulling out his right hand, he gently grabbed her left wrist and gestured her to follow him. He took one step ahead but felt that she was not moving. He gave her a questioning look as he faced her again.

Girl (looking down and in a soft voice) - Aapke daahine haath mei uss din chot lagi thi. Uspe zyaada zor mat dijiye nahi toh dard hoga
(Your right hand was wounded that day. Don't put much pressure on it or else it will pain)

His heart skipped a beat as he heard the concern in her voice for him. He was rendered speechless and pleasantly surprised as this was the first time someone had uttered such caring words for him soothing his heart.

Stretching out her right hand she held his left hand and got up on her feet. His trance was broken when he heard her whimper due to the pain in her legs and then he remembered the marks he had seen on her body.

Man (rubbing his thumb on the back of her hand) - Ab bhi dard hai? (Is it still paining?)

She knew he had seen her in the most vulnerable condition and was slightly happy for his heedfulness towards her bruises.

Girl - Jab bohot der baithne ke baad uthti hu tab thoda dard hota hai (When I get up after sitting for a very long time, it pains a little)

When they were about to exit the bus, he realised that there were 3 small steps near the door. Thinking that it would pain her to descend down these 3 odd steps, he got down first and then circling his left arm around her waist, he lifted her against his body earning a gasp from at his sudden action. They shared a deep eyelock where he tried to notice any apprehensions in her eyes and she stared at those orbs which were filled with care for her.

He put her on the ground slowly and their moment broke when he heard Siddharth calling out to him. Again holding her hand, he took her to the jeep in which Siddharth arrived and made her sit inside handing her a bottle of water.

Man (attention towards the ringing phone) - Tu paani pee. Mai thodi der mei aata hu. (Drink water. I will be back in some time)

He felt her hold tightening on his shirt as if indicating him to not leave her alone

Man (placing his hand on her) - Darr mat. Yahi hu mai (Don't be afraid. I am here only)

The moment he showed her his back, the concerned man was gone and Inspector Dev Kashyap was back in action. He picked up the phone and answered.

Tiwari - Kashyap, Is it done?

Dev - Yes, Sir

Tiwari - All dead?

Dev - No sir. Purposely, kept one of them alive to divulge information

Tiwari - Any passenger casualties?

Dev - No casualties. 3 injured

Tiwari - Take an off tomorrow

Dev - Not required, Sir

With that he hanged up the call and went to Siddharth to explain him the further course of action.

Dev (authoritatively) - Apni team bhej pata karne ke kaun hai yeh log. Kiske liye kaam karte hai. Inka adda kaha hai. Kul milaake kitne log hai. Poori khabar kal tak mhaare table par honi chahiye office aane se pehle (Send our team to investigate who these people are, for whom do they work, their hideout, total number of gang members. Before I reach office, I want all the information to be kept at my table)

Siddharth - Yes Sir

Dev - Har ek yatri ki detail le record ke liye. Aur inn logo ko ghar pohchaane ka jald se jald intezaam kar (Note down every detail of each passenger for record purposes. Make travel arrangements for these people as soom as possible)

Once he was done giving the orders, he headed back towards her.

Dev (pointing at Siddharth's direction) - Woh wahaa par jo officer hai uske paas apna naam, pata aur gharwaalo ka number likhwaale jaake (Go to that officer there and tell him your name, address and mobile number of your family members so that he can inform them)

The girl looked at him shocked and then again started shaking in fear. And then after recollecting past incidents, he could very well say that she was on a run. And was constantly living in a fear of getting caught. When Siddharth called out to her, she looked up at him as if asking some help. And as if he read her eyes correctly

Dev (keeping his eyes fixed on her) - Isko jaanta hu mai. Mhaare saath hai yeh. Mat likh iska naam (I know her. She is with me. Don't write her name)

Siddharth (unsurely) - Par Sir, Tiwari Sir ko kya jawaab denge (But what will we answer Tiwari Sir if he asks?)

Dev (in an irritated and rude tone) - Tiwari Sir ko unn aadmiyo se matlab hai jo uss bus mei mare pade hai. Unhe koi dilchaspi nahi hai jaanne mei ke kaun zinda bach gaya. Jitna keh raha hu utna kar (Tiwari Sir, is only concerned about the men who are lying dead inside the bus. He is not interested to know who are alive. Just do as I say)

Siddharth realised that his boss' mood had turned sour and nodded in fear. Getting into the bus he took her luggage and again took her hand bringing her near his bike. He sat and turned the bike on; his latest model of Royal Enfield...Bullet, accelerating it.

Girl (hesitatingly) - Kaise matlab aapka haath? (How..I mean your hand)

Dev - Itna bhi dard nahi hai. Ek side baith...dono pair saath mei (It is not that painful. Sit with your both the legs on one side)

She climbed and sat as he instructed

Dev - Thaara haath mhaare kandhe par rakh. Giraunga nahi. Bharosa rakh (Rest your hand on my shoulder. Trust me will not let you fall)

With that, both of them headed towards Delhi. When they entered the city, the roads were full of lights and brightness as it was Diwali today. They stopped at a traffic signal and that is when she found a small boy and girl selling hand made diyas and rangoli. Her eyes moistened seeing them and she immediately told him to park the bike on the side. Once he stopped, she practically ran towards the children and hugged wishing them Diwali. She had few notes and hence bought 3-4 diyas and rangoli powder. Dev was flattered seeing her compassionate nature. Getting off his bike, he looked around to see if any store was open. Fortunately, there were some youngsters bursting crackers, he went towards them and handing them few bills purchased some fuljhadis, anaar and chakris for the children. Taking the items, he rushed where she stood chatting with the children. Her compassionate nature was not the only thing that drew him towards the children but it was a reminder of his childhood where he himself craved to enjoy such festivities by bursting crackers or eating sweets. He handed over the items to the children and took their leave by wishing them Diwali.

Half an hour later their ride finally ended in front of a decent looking apartments. Removing the keys from the bike, he motioned her to follow him. They entered the lift and he pressed the button for 7th floor. The lift chimed indicating that they had arrived on their floor. Fishing out his house keys, he unlocked the door and switched on the lights. She came inside and scanned the whole area. Dev was somewhere conscious that probably he would be judged for his mess.

Girl - Kitchen kaha hai (Where is the kitchen?)

Dev was startled at her query and absent mindedly pointed to his right. She reached the kitchen and searched for some oil and cotton. She found the oil besides the gas stove but couldn't find cotton.

Girl - Rui? (Cotton)

Dev brought the cotton from the drawer amd gave it to her. She made some wicks out of it. Pouring some oil in the diyas which she purchased on her way, she placed the wicks in each one of them. Chandini lighted 3 diyas and placed 2 of them at the corners of the door and one near the window. She made a swastik at the entrance with white rangoli powder as well.

Chandini - Aaj Diwali hai aur aaj ke din ghar mei ujaala hona chahiye. Happy Diwali (It is Diwali today and there should be brightness in the house)

Dev (muttering) - Happy Diwali
