I've been a fan of FK since watching him in Imlie and was excited when I heard of his new show on Star Plus.
However, his character on the show, Ranbir, has been quite disappointing. For someone established as a mature and successful guy, Ranbir is shown to be quite confused, petty, and insecure.
Firstly - there's the initial misunderstanding of both families thinking he likes Adrija. IMO, the fault lies solely at Ranbir's feet. He never expressed clearly to anyone, including Meghla herself, who he likes, and then has the audacity to be outraged that no one understood his intentions. For God's sake, there were two unmarried girls in the Sen household, of course his family assumed he liked the elder daughter. Why couldn't he just have uttered Meghla's name once in front of his family - it's not that hard! The whole time it looked like he was being annoyingly mysterious about the girl he liked just to enjoy the attention he was getting from his family - because it's such a big deal that he likes someone.
Secondly, his whole attitude change after learning that Meghla has agreed to marry someone else (even though it's a lie). For someone who claims to be madly in love with that girl, he was quite eager to humiliate her in public and call her 'two-faced' and whatnot - all due to a couple of missed calls. I mean, what's with the guy's ego. They were just missed calls! If it was annoying him so much, he could have blocked her number or just called her back to give her a piece of his mind (which I believe is how it happened in the original, IIRC). And then after doing all this, the very next day, he goes: "Meghla, you can call me anytime. I would never stop you from calling me." Then why the hell were you mad that she did? Make up your mind, bro!
Also, this was a minor detail, but after this public dressing down of Meghla, when a simpering Adrija tries to pacify him, he asks her not to interfere coz "Ye uske and Meghla k beech k baat hain". Agar beech ki baat hain toh beech mein hi rakhna tha na. Sabke saamne tamaasha kyun banaaya!
Then there's his insistence that Meghla has 'humiliated' him and his precious feelings by not telling him about the other guy. Dude, you've met her like 4-5 times. She wasn't in a relationship with you. She doesn't owe you anything. In one of the recent episodes, he fought with her just because she refused his invitation to drop her home, which he found 'insulting'. Like, what an entitled jerk! He was acting like those men who expect their wife's family to treat them like Gods. Even in today's precap, he repeats the same 'you have insulted me by refusing to let me drop you home' mantra-jaap. I don't know whether there's a different context this time around, but I still find it unreasonable on his part to force his proximity on a girl who he thinks doesn't reciprocate his feelings. Seems very toxic behaviour, on the whole.
If the makers thought they would excite audiences with this jealousy track, they are going about it the wrong way and butchered Ranbir's character in the process. I've tried really hard to connect with this show but I'm finding it hard coz I'm unable to fall in love with his character (which is usually my main reason for watching any ITV show), and consequently ship Ranbir-Meghla as a couple. I feel like it's important to flesh out the main characters properly, especially in the early stages of a soap, if they want to set the foundation for a good story and establish a fan base. I don't think I'm asking too much. I mean, jealousy can be portrayed in non-toxic ways too - but I guess ITV just isn't there yet.
