I'm on the fence about this show. Like many people I started watching just because of Fahmaan and I can see why he accepted this role. Making your mark in a show with a large cast, that too with many seasoned actors, is not easy. Plus he's probably excited about playing a Sardar and a Sufi character. Dharampatni was a typical EK show that you couldn't expect too much from and there were way too many people in that show. I had wondered why he took that up but when I watched a few scenes I felt it was because he wanted a clear departure from the Aryan Singh Rathore role so as not to be typecast as the angry young man type of actor.
I feel like they are taking time to set the background of the other characters, which is great because focusing only on leads ends up reducing opportunities to drive interesting story arcs. Ranbir's dynamics with each of his family members is being shown clearly. I do agree that they shouldn't take too long to have the leads meet. Hopefully it will be in tomorrow's episode - they shouldn't drag this anymore. I like the fact that so far we don't have out an out goody too shoes or villains. I like nuance and grays.
Some of the background stories seem to be similar to what I've seen on other shows, e.g. the brother-bhabi conflict is similar to YRKKH (even the profession), the aunt having mental health issues and the reasons for it are a lot like in GHKPM, FL idolizing an older sister who doesn't deserve it, like in Imlie.
I also feel like there are too many people in Ranbir's family but perhaps that's the point, to serve as a contrast to Meghla's 4-member one, along with all the cultural contrasts. As long as they're shown to have their own arcs that drives the story, I don't mind, because one thing that many shows lack in ITV is fleshing out side characters. They tend to make them one dimensional or have them just stand in the background to support leads without adding much to the story. At some point the leads' arcs dry up and then they start showing crap but if the leads' dynamics with each of the members is shown then it could take the story forward really well. There's a music connection that the aunt, the brother and eventually Meghla will also have, that should be well explored. I just hope they won't have Adrija chasing Ranbir, I'm so over the whole two sisters fighting over the same man, or even two women fighting over the same man, in general.
So far I like Ranbir's character showing respect to everyone and finding his own way of diffusing tension at home without appearing OTT. I also love that he's not trying overly hard to drag the whole family to the family trip and is ok to travel alone. I know it's a plot point to get Meghla and Ranbir to meet and spend time alone in a foreign city (because how else do leads from completely different backgrounds meet, lol) but I hope they'll show Ranbir visiting all the places his mother told him about. Darjeeling is known for its natural beauty and I'm hoping he'll explore that, while also falling in love with a human beauty too.
I also suspected that Meghla is the Iraboti's kid but not sure yet. It would be an interesting twist if it was actually Adrija that was the adopted one, which makes her resentful but perhaps they wanted to show that Meghla feels insecure and keeps wanting Adrija's approval because she doesn't want to feel like an outsider. I wonder if she knows she's adopted and I wonder if Ranbir's mom will find out about this before or after the wedding.
By the way, is it me or are the episodes short? Typically episodes are 21-22 mins long, and when a new show is launched they often tend to be up to 30 mins long in the initial days but this show's episodes are only about 18-19 minutes. I wonder if it's because they only started shooting recently and don't have much stock footage yet.
Regarding the show's success, I think they have a good chance of doing well if the team can pull off exploring various arcs and keeping things balanced: sometimes serious, sometimes lighthearted. I do hope they bring some novelty in the story and execution, rather than recycling plots from other shows, otherwise they will have wasted the talent of most of the crew, especially Fahmaan and Shalini. I hope for his sake the show does well, he needs and deserves a hit now.
