To begin with IB 1 was a good show, the cast from the beginning performed very well. Story was gripping and new. But here the story is poorly done mishmash of popular bollywood movies.
Let's begin with the narrative, we have a superstar who has a terminal heart condition aka Kal Ho Na Ho. The show shamelessly uses the title song of the movie as background music. Because of his condition he is restricted to romance genre for his movies. The action super star- a competitor in the movie industry taunts our terminal super star. So our sick superstar actually bashes up the action guy and wants to make an action movie to get back at the action hero. Also this super star's great grandmothers are unaware of their great grand child's health issues and wants him to do an action movie. So our super star decides do an action movie. He begins prepping for this role by shadowing a tough cop. Also the touch cop has something to say against the super star and he wants to makes sure she does not spill beans. Our beloved writer did not want to take any chance with just one justification to turn Ishqbaaaz into a hybrid of Kal Ho Na Ho and Main Anadi Tu Khiladi. And our super star here has multiple justifications to set him up with the tough cop. Now for the Khiladi part. The super stars now tries to act smart with the tough cop and the tough cop wants to put him in his place. Typically such scenes are total fireworks but this time around, it was endless and boring. We had a brief scene where there is supposed to be a verbal volley between the male and female leads. A similar scenes between Annika- Shivaay would have been fired up the screen but his one is blah... just a snooze fest.
So nothing new narrative wise. On the contrary IB which was a fun show is now reduced to a weepy bore fest.We have seen all these stories several times before. Most rom-com have the some kind of meet cute and only the good ones stand out. Since most meet cutes are similar, it is the execution that sets them apart. Nothing can save the scene if the actors don't do a good job. It is in this department that the show fails miserably. Except Supriya Pilgaonkar, Nani , (dadi was missing) most other performances were forgettable. Nakuul who rocked as Shivaay Singh Oberoi looks like he is just killing time on the sets. Nothing remarkable, though he delivered a few dialogue well enough to remind me that this is the same person who played Shivaay. It does look like the intention of the makers was to portray a character, a naughty, charming, slightly arrogant, witty super star who is acutely aware of his mortality and therefore in a hurry to get things done - a combination of Saif- SRK- Vivian Dsena but none of it seems to work.
The female lead cuts a sorry figure. She started the show with a great deal of baggage. Surbhi the previous lead did a very good job of portraying Annika. The new lead had to measure up to Annika at the least which is not remotely happening. Character wise, she is very similar to Annika, she has a sibling, is an orphan, supports the family, keeps only a 1,000 rupees for herself while pampering her sister with a pocket money and yeah the panner. Now that it is the beginning of the month and she has got a salary, she has prepared panner for her sister. Thank god the super girl who can fly is not yet shown starving for the want of food. She is supposed to be a honest, simple, diligent and workaholic tough cop - A perfect foil for the superstar's charming arrogance but she is unable to pull it off. She is plain boring, she has no attitude, angst or charm that Annika so effectively portrayed.
Otherwise the production is cheap and have been recycling things from IB 1. Annika's bangles, watch, perhaps earrings are all being used by the new female lead. The Kurta too is similar to Annika/ Gauri's clothes.
About other cast members, there is nothing to be said, they are all totally forgettable. The writer badly wants to tickle viewers' funny bones but fails miserably. There are better jokes on WhatsApp forwarded messages. She did be better off at her job copying those forwarded jokes. Rudy and Dadi trivially bet 50,000 in IB 1 initial episodes now characters in IB2 are betting 300 rupees over something trivial. This indeed is symbolic of Ishqbaaaz's slide. Ishqbaaaz is now reduced to lame cringe comedy, weepy terminal lead, cheap props, sloppy copy paste writing and totally forgettable performances.
Wish the makers had decided to either keep the original cast with a better track or ended the show altogether.
