Chapter 2
4 hours earlier to Annika disappearing
Shivaay:
He was not sure what it was, but ever since the reception and his public declaration of Tia as Mrs Shivaay Singh Oberoi, a sense of danger and foreboding had enveloped him. The hairs on his hand had stood up and no matter how hard he had chafed his arms they wouldn't go back to being normal. Annika's eyes from the 50 feet that separated them at the reception had looked so dull and lifeless that for a moment he had the involuntary urge to rush to her and ask "tum theek ho? Crushing that urge had taken a mammoth effort and he had clenched his fist and teeth so hard that they hurt now. He had drawn on the image burned away in his brain of seeing Daksh casually button up his shirt while Annika had straightened the bedsheets and then the soft smile she had given as he had given her the money in an envelope. His rage and pain on remembering had been so great, that his eyes had momentarily turned arctic blue and his expression had become so ice cold that Tia had gasped and taken a step back from him in fear. That had brought him back to reality and he had deliberately smiled the softest smile he could muster, while firmly taking Tia's hand in his and placing it in the crook of his elbow. That's the moment a photographer had taken a shot of the supposed newlyweds that he was sure was going to come out in tomorrow's papers with some cheesy and gushy headlines. He didn't care, he was going to enjoy the absolute pain that would descend on Annika when she realized that her ploys had not won and she was still a nobody to him.
Speaking of which, he scanned the room looking for his prey, and to his disappointment she was not there among the hundreds of people milling around. Come to think of it even his brothers, Prinku and Dadi were missing. He frowned in irritation. He knew they did not understand why he had done what he had, but he was sure once he explained they would throw Annika out of their lives just as he had. She was a dishonest, deceitful and manipulative girl that had no business even being linked with the Oberoi name in any way.
Disentangling Tia's hand from his elbow and murmuring the excuse of needing to make a call he went in search of his family. They needed to know right now and he was going to make sure that the security guards escorted that girl out of the Oberoi mansion grounds as soon as he finished talking with his family.
There was no sign of Dadi, Rudra, Omkara or Priyanka in any of the corridors. He had even checked their rooms but they had all disappeared. His frustration mounting he headed towards his room so that he could call them from his phone in peace without the noise from the reception interrupting. As he rounded the corner on the way to his room, he could hear the murmur of sounds coming from the slightly open doors of his room. That had him stopping in his tracks, as he wondered who would dare to invade his domain when he was not there. Quietly he opened the door a crack a bit more and saw something that made his rage climb higher than anything he had experienced before. Annika sat on his bed with his Dadi and his siblings trying their level best to cheer her up. Dadi was murmuring something while rubbing Annika's back in slow rhythmic motions, Omkara was also sitting next to her and murmuring something that Shivaay couldn't hear. Rudra was trying to make her laugh by goofing around like a clown and Prinku was holding a glass of water that she was making Annika drink from. And in the middle sat Annika No Last Name as if she was the queen.
He strode forward shaking with rage and grabbed Annika by her arm intending to drag her from his room, when Dadi said "Stop. The force behind that command made him halt and he turned around to stare at his Dadi in astonishment. He had never heard her speak in that tone to any of them. The ice and the command in that tone was enough to send shivers down his spine. This was not his Dadi, it was Kalyani Singh Oberoi at her best. She walked forward and disentangled Annika's hand from his bruising grip and looked at him with enough anger in her eyes to make him take a step back. "Dadi.. I... he stuttered and she raised her hand in the universal symbol of stop. "I don't want to hear your reasons or excuses, this is not the way to treat another human being and definitely not how an Oberoi bahu should be treated. "She is not an Oberoi bahu, I don't believe in this marriage and she is not my wife Shivaay stated in as calm manner as possible.
Dadi shook her head and extended a piece of paper to him that she had been holding in her other hand. With trepidation, Shivaay opened the paper and to his shock, he saw it was a marriage certificate with his and Annika's name on it. It was clear evidence that Annika No Last Name was now Mrs Annika Shivaay Singh Oberoi.
Dadi calmly took the papers back from his nerveless fingers and handed them to Annika, "Puttar, this is now yours. If at anytime someone questions you or asks your name, and she directly looked at Shivaay when she said it, "this is the proof of who you are. I had these drawn up as soon as I realized that Shivaay married you and not Tia so that no one would question the relationship you have with this family. Sorry for getting your signatures on these by deceit but I am glad I did it because now no one and I mean absolutely no one can point fingers at you. I will leave husband and wife to sort out matters on their own but a word of warning to you Shivaay, Annika is the Oberoi bahu and your wife. It would behoove you to remember that when you speak to her. I will not tolerate a daughter of this house being maligned or mistreated.
Dadi nodded to the youngsters in the room and they all filed out of the room past a stunned Shivaay who couldn't believe all that his Dadi had said and done. He also dazedly realized that for the first time in his life she had called him "Shivaay and not "Billu as she usually did. He was losing his family and it was all because of Annika. The girl had done black magic on his family. Couldn't they see how characterless and devious she was? Couldn't they understand he was trying to protect them?
Shivaay looked up to see the room empty. Where had that girl disappeared too? After wreaking havoc in his life she was probably off celebrating her victory. Fresh rage burned through his veins. Now he would have to abide by Dadi's rule and tolerate her. Spying a flash of emerald green color near his poolside he strode quickly over there only to come up short on seeing Annika sitting in the corner near the pool with her knees drawn up and her head resting on her knees. This is was not the posture of someone who had won, it screamed of defeat and helplessness. For a moment Shivaay faltered, she did not seem to be celebrating, infact there was an air of despair that hung like a cloud around her.
Reminding himself that she was no innocent, he stalked up to her and said in a clear ice cold voice, "You can stop the drama now, everyone has left.Dull eyes lifted up to him and it was like looking into a bottomless black hole, there was no end, all that was there was a blackness that swallowed all the light. The hopelessness in those eyes almost sent him reeling back. Then came her words, "Drama is for people like you Mr Shivaay Singh Oberoi, and for some reason he flinched, he was so used to hearing Billuji or SSO or the so many other names she had given him in the past 4 months that the formal Mr Shivaay Singh Oberoi seemed almost an insult.
"You have no idea what you have done. The farce that played out today may seem as easy to forget as drama to you but it is my life that you have played this drama with. You used my weakness to bring me to my knees and I will never forgive you for that. I have never prayed to a God before because he has never been on my side but today if there is a God and if in his judgement what happened with me is wrong then, I pray that you go through the same pain that I am in. I pray that you too come to a point in time where your independence, your pride and your ability to take decisions for yourself is taken away and you are helpless. May you also have your fate controlled by someone else.
Those prophetic words slammed into Shivaay like a hailstorm. For a moment he wondered if curses were real and if they bore fruit. His anger quick to rise came to his defense, "Don't play Sati Savitri, you of all people cannot claim to be innocent and a pawn in other people's games. People who sell themselves for 15 lakhs cannot curse others for using them.
Annika froze. Slowly almost as if each movement was causing her pain she unwound her legs, placed them on the ground and stood up. Her eyes never left his but now instead of the black bottomless pit from earlier he saw a slow burning fire. "What did you just say, the question almost seemed breathless.
"I know everything... You sold yourself to Daksh for 15 lakhs, you defiled my house by spending one night here with him for 15 lakhs. I saw you the next day morning when he paid you for "your services. So spare me your holier than thou attitude, you are nothing but the roadside trash that I called you before. My calculations about you in the beginning were right. You do not deserve anything, not my family's friendship, honor or respect. As for me I am going to call the security guards right now and throw you out on the road because that's where you belong. Expect divorce papers to come to you tomorrow and even if you think about contesting it or making a media spectacle then believe me, I will bury you somewhere where no one will be able to find you. If you cross Shivaay Singh Oberoi, you will find that what I did to get you to agree to this marriage will be nothing compared to what I do next. I will ...
He trailed off as Annika turned and walked away from him. It used to infuriate him when she walked away after having the last word when they had argued previously and it infuriated even him today. He sprinted after her grabbed her hand and twisted it behind her back pulling her flush against him. But instead of the sizzling awareness and the nervous energy that he usually experienced every time he touched her, this time he was greeted with indifference. Her pulse did not skitter, there was no blush spreading across her cheeks and the eyes that usually widened and then mellowed with awareness were opaque. It was like holding a block of ice. Slowly he let her go, rattled by the experience and not knowing what to do. She said nothing, only looked at him with an unreadable gaze for a minute then slowly, and gracefully with her head held high walked out of his room, his house and his life. And for the first time in his life Shivaay Singh Oberoi felt shame and guilt rear their heads. It was only later that he realized, Annika had walked out with the marriage certificate still grasped in her hand.
Next day morning:
Dressed in his crisp white shirt and gray trouser pants with grey waistcoat and gray blazer, Shivaay was getting ready to head to work when a commotion made him look outside his window. He saw many reporters gathered outside the wrought iron gates of Oberoi mansion and his security was struggling to keep them contained. Wondering what all the fuss was about he descended the stairs to see his family gathered in the hall arguing among themselves while Tia sat in a corner crying her eyes out. "Khanna... Khanna.. he bellowed at the top of his lungs. His ever faithful security guard stepped up but wouldn't look at him in the eyes. "What are all those reporters doing outside the gates and what the hell is going on here? No one answered.
Exasperated and confused by why his family was looking at him as if he had grown two heads he turned around fished his phone out of his pocket and called his lawyer. "Mr Mishra, are the divorce papers ready yet? I want you to deliver them personally to her. Make sure she signs them in front of you. If she creates a ruckus or refuses to sign call me. Refusing to listen to anything the lawyer was trying to say he cut the phone and turned around only to be startled by Om who it seemed had crept up on him as he was on phone. "Geez man you scared me, stop creeping up on me like that. What if I got a heart attack? he tried to joke but it fell flat. Om just glared at him and that's when Shivaay got the first inkling that everything was not alright. "What have you done Shivaay? What have you done with Annika? Om asked in a voice so soft it sent chills down his spine.
"What do you mean what have I done? I have done nothing. She walked out of here on her own. You just heard me ask the lawyer to deliver the divorce papers to her house. Frankly I am tired of this whole mess, once she signs the divorce papers then Tia and I can marry in a small ceremony here at home and we can all put this mess behind us and move on. I am ready to forget ...
A loud slap echoed through the hall. Shivaay was stunned, his Dadi had walked up before he had finished and given him a tight slap in front of everybody. His cheek stung. In a voice laced with fury that he had never ever heard from her before she asked Shivaay, "Where is my bahu? "Da.. Dadi...y.. you..you just slapped me? "Don't call me Dadi. I am ashamed that you are my grandson.Unable to imagine what had happened Shivaay looked across at his other family members. Prinku was sobbing, leaning her head against Badi Ma's shoulder, Rudy was crying big silent tears which were scary because they were silent and not the loud sobs that usually accompanied one of his dramas, his mother had collapsed on the seat behind her with her head in her hands and his father was trying to console her. Bade papa was looking at him with pity in his eyes. Badi Ma had disgust in her eyes for him. Fear unlike anything he had ever known clawed at him. "Will someone tell me what happened? he shouted. Khanna quietly took the remote from the table and turned the TV on.
"Business Tycoon Shivaay Singh Oberoi is not married to Tia Kapoor as previously reported. We bring this exclusive news and footage that confirms that Shivaay Singh Oberoi actually married his wedding planner Ms Annika but lied to the media and world at his reception and called Ms Tia Kapoor his long time fiance as his wife. Why did Mr Shivaay Singh Oberoi lie? Sources are speculating its because Ms Annika is an orphan with no money and with no knowledge of her Naam, Khoon, Khandan which Mr Oberoi has been known to be a proponent of. So why would he marry an orphan you ask? Channel 9 has exclusive footage of how the wedding happened.
The screen shifted to show Annika running away from the wedding and then Shivaay catching her as he threatened her with the life of Sahil. The gruesome video played out in the Oberoi living room of the dummy car being blown up and Annika's desperate attempt to save the brother that she thought was in the car. Annika's breakdown as she realized the marriage was the only way to save her brother was heartbreaking. Shivaay stood rooted to his spot, shaken and disturbed by what he saw. To be shown his misdeeds in technicolor was both eerie and frightening. He truly looked like a monster with the glittering ice blue eyes and a face that resembled a stone. In a distant corner of his brain he registered the gasps that came from his family in the background but what caught his attention more than their reaction was a small news item playing in a loop at the bottom of the screen.
"Mrs Annika Shivaay Singh Oberoi has been missing since yesterday and Mr Shivaay Singh Oberoi is the prime suspect in the disappearance of Mrs Annika and her brother Sahil. A sou moto case had been registered by the Mumbai High Court against Mr Shivaay Singh Oberoi based on this video for blackmail, coercion, attempted manslaughter and he was expected to be arrested in a short while.
At that moment, Khanna handed him an envelope that had just arrived. Still shocked and dazed by the events of the morning Shivaay absently tore open the envelope. The black beads of a broken mangalsutra scattered across the floor and all Shivaay could do was stare at the 3 small diamonds from the centerpiece that remained intact. Annika had broken the last link with him. His chickens had finally come home to roost.
Precap: "What do you mean I cannot be granted anticipatory bail? I had nothing to do with her disappearance dammit.
"Chanda please tell me where she is? I want to help her, I know Shivaay is my ex but what he has done this time is so very wrong. I cannot remain quiet while she suffers. She helped me when no one else would and now its time to return the favor.
