Drabble 5: "This is not about battle of the genders
Omkara kept pressing the bell, when even after several attempts no one answered the door.
"Did it ever occur to you that maybe no one is inside? Gauri checked in, impatient already.
"No, because I know Mrs. Arora is in there, the constable just confirmed this, they are watching the flat from adjacent building, no one has come out since. Omkara replied politely with his posh accent.
Uff' thought Gauri,' why does he have to be so perfect? this man will drive me crazy'.
She started moving, checking the periphery of the flat, peeping through the windows, almost attempting to break-in.
"What do you think you are doing Holmes? You will spook her if nothing else. Omkara winced. He didn't want his prime suspect escaping when he wanted to interrogate her.
"Let's break the door Sherlock. If she is not answering, I suspect she is in danger, or on the run. Gauri was quick to provide a reason for her antics, she was a woman of action.
At first, Omkara was shocked at this suggestion, but after a couple more futile attempts at ringing the bell, he conceded. Gauri's eyes lit up when he nodded. She at once swung into action, fiddling with the handle and then pushing the door in. Omkara stood watching her smirking, she looked cute and macho at the same time. He then decided to help her out and started pushing at the door with his shoulders. The door gave way and they rushed in to find a woman sprawled on the floor, blood rushing out of her wrist, she was holding a knife in the other hand. It looked like she had attempted a suicide.
Gauri quickly bent down and tried to stop the blood with her fingers, whilst Omkara just gaped not being able to bear the sight of so much oozing blood.
"Sherlock, what are you staring at? Bring me a cloth and call the ambulance Gauri brought him out of the shock.
After handing Gauri the kitchen towel with which she wrapped the woman's wrist to stop the bleeding, Omkara got busy on the phone. The next hour or so passed in a daze for both of them, rushing the woman to safety of a hospital, they waited outside for the doctor to give them an update. Gauri excused herself to wash her bloodied hands and Omkara made a few more phone calls.
The doctor walked out of the room just as Gauri re-appeared from the washroom. "She is safe now. You did well in stopping the blood on time. The doctor was all praises for the said person.
Gauri glanced at Omkara and caught him looking at her, Perhaps gratefully? Was it?' Gauri wondered.
She had saved the day twice, firstly by suggesting to break the door and secondly by stopping the blood.' Omkara thought. She could prove to be a very good partner.' One tiny part of Omkara suggested, which he completely ignored.
"Thank you doc. When can we speak with Mrs. Arora? Omkara queried.
"She is asleep right now, we have given her sleeping pills. We will inform you when she comes around.
"Ok, thanks doc. Two constables will stay here, guarding the room in the meantime. Omkara moved on, Gauri following not far behind.
"Did you notice the bruises on her forehead and neck, Sherlock? Gauri couldn't control her curiosity.
"Yes, I did. Wonder how they came about? Perhaps whilst she was attacking her husband and he tried to defend himself? Omkara was cynical.
"Of course you would think that. Couldn't it be a case of domestic violence? To me, it looks like she has been hit by a person, most obviously her husband, the man of the house exercising his physical power on a vulnerable woman. Gauri countered.
"This is not about man vs. woman. Get a grip Holmes. No point arguing with each other. I have a strong intuition that Mrs. Arora killed her husband and attempted to commit suicide later, in guilt. Don't forget, if someone looks vulnerable doesn't mean that they are. Especially women, they have a knack for pretending like they are damsels in distress most of the time. Omkara tried to explain, still holding onto his sanity.
"Intuition! Of course, how can you think from a woman's perspective? I am sure even if she did; she had good reason to do so. Gauri was getting furious, her temper was rising. It didn't take a lot to get her going, she was the easily angered kind and Omkara had touched a personal nerve. Every bone in Gauri's body spoke to feminism and this time she will make it about man vs. woman' Gauri thought to herself.
