Part 1: Hold My Heart Forever...
Hand in hand we walk through the doors of our abode. It takes a lot of courage from within my insides to not look back one last time.
One last time before we leave.
But I know I won't be able to hold back if I do. I'll run back to my brothers who expect me to step out of this house.
I feel a reassuring squeeze on my palm. Her beautiful eyes held unshed tears in her eyes. Pain embedded on her face.
She didn't want to do it too.
I gulp down the ball of emotions, and squeeze her palm in mine in an answering manner.
"Let's go, Annika." I whisper firmly.
A tear rolls down her eyes, betraying her strength. And like always, her teary face stabs my insides and twists like a knife. Once again, I've brought tears in her eyes.
She nods silently and walks out with me, painfully ignoring the cries of what I called family.
It's just us now.
Annika and I.
"Yes. Just you and me," She says with a soft look in her eyes, "But, I know, this isn't the end."
I look at her in a daze, realizing that I had said out my words loud for her to hear. She rest her head on my shoulder and sniffs.
"No. It's not. This is just the beginning. A new beginning of us."
"Why did you do it, Shivaay? You asked me trust you and your decisions, I did it. Blindly. Didn't ask you even once why do we have to leave... But, I can see that you did not want to do it. Why did you leave everyone behind when you love all of them so much?"
"I will answer your questions, but not here. I don't know what to do now! I don't have a single property on my name, and I don't know where will we find shelter.."
I'm a desperate man, who has a wife to look after with limited saving right now. How can she be so calm when I'm on the verge of suffering a panic attack.
"Don't fret! We will manage. I haven't sold my house yet. We still have it." She says reassuringly.
"When I said new beginnings, it didn't mean just our story, it meant a new beginning altogether. Your husband is broke, Annika." I say.
"And how is that supposed to bother me?"
"Annika? You know that I have only a few lakhs in the name of savings, rights?"
"Few lakhs?! Shivaay, I began my journey with just one pair of clothing on my body and starving for days together. Your 'few lakhs' are more than what we need to begin our life now." She says with a chuckle.
It saddens me to think about her life as a dirty, poor and hungry child. I know nothing about hardships when it is concerned with money. I was fed with a silver spoon in my mouth.
She is right. We have more than what we need.
"So... Where do we begin?" I ask her with a smile lingering on my lips.
"Maybe by getting a rickshaw?" Annika replies with a glint in her eyes and stops typical tobacco chewing rickshaw driver and boards it as well.
I sigh deeply. It's just a rickshaw, Shivaay. Let's do this.
* * * * * * * *
Dusting her hands, she sits on the bed and looks at me with a smile on her beautiful face. Sitting beside her, I pull her into my arms and rest my chin on her head.
"Things will be difficult from here..." She whispers.
"Hmm."
"I have my catering company, I can manage the household expenses. Will you take up a job?"
"Never thought I would have to take up a 9 to 5 job!" I say with a chuckle.
"It's okay. It's just the matter of time, I know you love business. We will work together. Save some more money and then you can start with buying stocks. Tab tak, meri catering service toh hai hi! Ghar ka kharcha, khana peena, Sahil ki fees aur chhote mote kharche ho hi jayenge..."
I laugh at the list.
"What?"
"Throughout my life I had everything served on a silver platter. I never imagined myself setting budgets and managing expenditure. It's weird. To.. you know, depend on a 9 to 5 job and you."
Annika slowly moves her head and looks up at me, "I felt the same, when Sahil's parents took my responsibilities. Everything felt weird. I wasn't making decisions for myself, someone else was. And then they passed away. And again I had to take over these responsibilities... Just this time around, I had Sahil care about. Not only he lost his parents in that accident, but also his leg. Back then my entire salary used to get soaked up in the hospital bills." She sighed.
"My family is not exactly what it looks like." She frowned at my words.
"What is that supposed to mean? You probably got the best family in this world."
"Just like every bad has something good hidden inside it, every good has something bad hidden too. My family has done a lot of things to be the best, Annika. Somethings were good, somethings were bad. We cannot judge them because we weren't a part of the situation and their decisions."
"Are you talking about the Kalyani Mills fire?" She questions me, doubtfully.
"Yes. Apparently, Bade Papa did set the mill on fire. Svetlana had a partial proof, I investigated further and found out that the match in Bade Papa's hand did cause the fire. It isn't clear whether it was intentional or not. But it proves just enough to put him behind the bars for the remaining of his life."
"Then why didn't you confront him? The Shivaay Singh Oberoi I know, always does the right thing! Yet you did not ask him once!!" Annika exclaims.
"I couldn't do it to Om, Annika! Finally Om and Bade Papa were bridging their gapes. It would end everything if this was to be revealed. It would destroy our family."
"And you rather destroy yourself than letting anybody destroy our family..." She sighed in despair and gently took me into her arms. I bury my face into her hair an inhale her soothing scent.
"I'm sorry... I didn't tell you before. I wanted to, but I did not want to burden you. I knew you had to deal with Svetlana at home. I did not want you to be stressed with the issues in the office."
"Why do think so? Every time you keep secrets from me and avoid conversations, it makes me feel like an outsider. Where I don't deserve to know what's happening with your family! Why do I have to beg you to share your worries with me? Why won't you just come up to me and demand that I listen to your issues? Why do you come to me after a fight, when you still won't reveal a word?"
For once in my life, I have nothing to say. So, I continue to stay silent.
"You better never repeat this ever again! Or else..."
"Or else, what?" I can feel my lips lift in a smirk, "What will you do, Annika?" She stands up and hovers over me, pointing a finger, as if warning me.
"Or you will end up on the living room couch! For a month!" Annika declares assertively. And I can say that she is serious, by the look on her face.
I get up and pull her towards myself, squeezing her waist gently. My actions have a quick effect as I feel her breathing quicken. Leaning onto her slightly, I whisper seductively, "Really, Annika? Now, you know that I don't appreciate being locked out of my own bed... So, you should probably refrain from such ideas."
"Then probably... you should refrain from keeping secrets from me.." She says while trying to gather her wits.
"You know, there is another secret that you probably still don't know about me..." I trail off, teasing her knowingly.
"And what is that, pray tell, Mr. Hubby?"
"Well that is something you will have to discover, Mrs. Wifey!" I say suggestively.
"What? At least give me a hint..." My wife pouts innocently.
Well when we put it up in decent words, "You know, the other night I was counting all the moles on your body..." I hint huskily and she gets what's coming next, "So, why don't you help me count mine? Maybe tonight? Maybe now?"
Annika's response is immediate, and she playfully pushes me away when I lean in for a kiss.
"Besharam!"
"What besharam?" I snort, " I'm your husband... And I've seen it all!" I reply with a wink.
"Stop it!" She giggles as she tries to pull away from my arms.
Staring at her giggling face, brings a genuine smile on my face after a long time.
"I love you, Annika."
"I know, Shivaay. And I love you too."
"I'm so glad that you are here with me. Even when I went all SSO on you..."
"I will always be with you... Even when you will go all SSO on me! Vaise bhi Sanki SSO ko sirf Pyaari Pannika sambhal sakti hai..."
"Voh toh hai..!" And we burst out laughing.
I just hope this laughter remains the same, on her face and mine. Lost money and time doesn't matter. All that matters is our love. And this love is for eternity. Forever.
You may hold my hand for a while,
But you hold my heart forever.
