Chapter 38: Clues to a past long forgotten
"Look, its not like I wanted to be with you,..." began Shivay. "Shh Mr Oberoi, I know. You didn't want Om to get upset if he saw Mr Oberoi with Svetlana. By Mr Oberoi, I don't mean..." said Anika, "Yeah Yeah, you don't mean Bade Papa, but me. I know." Finished Shivay. "Ok fine," began Shivay, before Anika could get a word in "Call me something apart from Mr Oberoi."
"Yeh hui na baat, Billuji" said Anika enthusiastically slapping at Shivay's shoulder. "God! Not that" grunted Shivay. "See, SSO is good, but it can be anything, Shivay Singh Oberoi, Sadu Singh Oberoi, Saankhi Singh Oberoi,..." began Anika. "Enough! No SSO!!" Snapped Shivay.
"Ok Ok Billuji, chill... Shh...look" said Anika, pointing to a man entering Svetlana's apartment.
"Yeah, Ok so whats so special about him?" Asked Shivay, looking at the plain looking man Anika was pointing towards. "He is the only one, in the past few hours who has gone in." Said Anika. "Looks like a hi-fi dhobi." She added. "A hi-fi, what?" Asked an incredulous Shivay. "Dhobi, arrey, laundry guy." Said Anika. "You could have said that to start with." Muttered Shivay.
"I think we should follow him." Said Anika. "No. Why?Besides I am not running after a laundry guy. Let me call Om and see what they found." Said Shivay to an annoyed Anika.
"Hey Om, what are you guys up to?" Enquired Shivay over his phone. It was decided that while Anika and Shivay would keep a watch over Svetlana's home, Om and Rudy would canvas the neighborhood to figure our what Svetlana was usually up to.
"Well," began an irritated Om, "We just bought a pack each of spiced channa, moong and peanuts. Also, masala popcorn." He said, "What??why??" Asked Shivay. "Rudy the idiot, stopped at every street vendor's stall. Whats more, he forgot that streets are cash only. So he pawned them his phone and watch. My phone is about to die and I really want to strangle our baby brother." Reported and annoyed Om and no sooner did the words leave his mouth, that the said phone went dead.
"Damn it!" Yelled Shivay. "Lets, get out of here." He said, turning to look at Anika. However, Anika was no where to be seen. You see, while Shivay was on the phone with Om, Anika following her gut, followed the dhobi. Swearing loudly, Shivay set out to look for Anika. ******************************************************************
Anika got there just in time to notice the hanky that fell out of the Dhobi's bundle. It was so weird, who ever carried these old style hankies, she thought. Picking up the hanky, she noticed it was a white hanky with scalloped edges. On the lower left corner was an insignia. Embroidered with leafy green threads were symbols of a leaf with five leaflets, and blue thread intricately spelling out SSO.
Curious, Anika picked it up and began to follow the dhobi into the narrow alley ways he was beginning to disappear into.
Following him, Anika began to enter the narrow twisty market that managed to survive the expansive construction of the new age residential complex. The newly constructed gated community took up most of the old market area. This caused all the stores that once occupied the expansive square to squeeze into a tiny area.
Anika began to follow the Dhobi, frantically calling out to him, but the mob took over. So used to crowds was Anika that, she did not notice, she was now being pursued by a small group of lecherous men. ********************************************************************
"Why am I stuck with the most ridiculous people. How many times did I tell Rudy to carry money on him?And from when has he started eating off the streets?And why is Om so anti technology?And why is Anika always running away. Stupid female, she was to stay put." Thought Shivay in frustration.
Taking a deep breath to focus his thoughts, Shivay stopped for a bit. And then that familiar feeling took over. "Anika he thought and began to follow his gut towards Anika. *********************************************************************
"You are stupid Rudy, Saumya is right about you. Why did you buy all this without checking your purse first?" Chided Om for the umpteenth time. It took a lot of cajoling and losing Rudy's latest phone to extricate themselves from the vendor mob. Now with a dead phone, they were both lost in tiny, narrow and overcrowded market. Their trip was quite useless actually. They never found out one thing about Svetlana, that they did not already know. And now, Om was beginning to worry about Shivay and Anika.
"Hey O, look look!" said an excited Rudy. "Rudy Shut up! You are not saying another word." Warned Om. "No, O! Look Anika didi" pointed an excited Rudy towards Anika who was no running behind the dhobi. Unfortunately for Anika, the men pursuing her thought that she was giving them chase and began to run after her too.
"But why are those men running after her?" He asked. Sensing something amiss, Om said, "Come on Rudy. Let us follow them. She may be in trouble." ************************************************************************
"Bhaiya ruko na." Yelled Anika. "Ruko, Ruko." She said as she finally caught up to the dhobi. "Isn't this hanky Svetlana madam's?" She asked. "Didi, jaane do, Please! Svetlana madam is already angry. Please don't tell her about this. I don't know if this is hers. Dont cause trouble for me." He said as he slunk away.
"Arrey arrey!" Said Anika. But she paused, she didn't want to run after him anymore. He was a scared boy of 15. There was nothing he would know, she was sure of that. But she had enough. The hanky with SSO on it. Maybe Billuji had a strange vintage style. He would certainly know about it. Thinking so, she turned to face the lecherous men who ran after her.
"Kya madamji itna bhagaya humko." Leered the first of them. "Itna bhagaya humko, kaafi stamina hai aap me." Said the other.
Composing herself, Anika began to move away, when the third made a move to grab her.
"Oye, Choodo hamari didi ko." Began and angry Rudy as he caught up with Anika and made it in time to catch the mob begin to trouble Anika.
"Arrey bache, jaanta nahi hai tu, ki hum kaun hai. Ache hai, nikal le yaha se. Chal phut" said one of the men from the mob beginning to shove at Rudy.
"Inspector, you see in addition to attempt to molesting a woman, this man is manhandling my brother. Arrest them all." Said Shivay cooly, masking a great deal of fury. Firstly, the mere sight of these men annoyed Shivay. Moreover, they made a huge mistake of messing with the people who mattered to him. Shivay watched in silent fury as they made a move on Anika. Steel will controlled him from going after them himself. How dare they set their sights on her, he thought. And to top it all, they had the gall to threaten his baby brother.
"Eh officer, jaanti nahi tu ki hum kaun hai. Kallan bhai ka aadmi hai." Said a man from the mob.
Grinning, the police officers rounded up the mob and loaded them into their vehicles. As they were about to drive away, Shivay stepped up to them and said, "Bolna Kallan bhai ko, Shivay Singh Oberoi ke bhai ko dhamkane ki keemat bahut mehangi hai." **********************************************************************
"Wow bhaiya, its no wonder you are my superman!" Grinned an ecstatic Rudy.
"All three of you Shut up and follow me out of this place, right now!" Commanded Shivay. *********************************************************************
"Anika didi, what do you think?" Whispered Rudy to Anika, "Bhai was like big B na, when he was threatening the guy." "Arrey nahi yaar, Big B toh lambe hai, height ke hissab se baat karte hai. But Billuji was completely original. Does he practice this infront of a mirror everyday?" She whispered back. That was enough for Om and Rudy to break into giggles. Sensing the chuckles and giggles, Shivay turned to face his errant party. With anger etched into every feature of his face, Shivay glared at them till the giggles died out.
Just as he was about to turn around and silently lead them up to their vehicle, Anika said, "Billuji. Please. Rudy and I are tired from all the running. Can we please get something to eat. Look, Buddhi ke Baal." Squealed Anika and ran up to the vendor selling cotton candy.
"Here, get something decent to eat." Said Shivay handing Rudy 1000 rupees, before he began to sprint to catch up with Anika.
"Billuji won't you try?" Asked Anika waving the bright pink candy under Shivay's nose. "Please!its so unhealthy!" Said Shivay. "Suit yourself!" Said Anika and added, "Can you hold this for me, I need my purse." as she reached out for her purse. "Wait!" Said Shivay as he stepped closer, and moved towards her. Very delicately he brushed some of the bright pink candy off her node. It took every nerve in his body to fight against the impulse of just hugging her close to himself. Uncontrollable rage and fear took over as he saw her surrounded by the mob. If not for Rudy, Shivay would have pummeled every single one of their faces to dust. But Rudy intervening, helped him control himself and issue out the right orders. And now that she was safe and right beside him, he was overcome by a strong emotion. Emotions that wanted him to hug her tight and never let go.
As Shivay's fingers brushed lightly against her nose, Anika's skin began to tingle. She caught a whiff of his expensive sent and felt at ease. His scent was warm and inviting, like a comfort blanket. Oh what she would give to just hug him tight and breath into his scent! Shaking herself off these thoughts Anika moved onto more worldly matters, bills had to be paid.
Shivay saw Anika fumble for some change in her purpose. Not wishing to waste any more time, he quickly reached into his purse and handed the vendor a crip 500 rupee note. "Keep the change." He said. "Hey" began Anika, "I have money Billuji, I can pay him." She said. "When we go out, I pay." Said Shivay quickly and without thinking.
Luckily for them, the awkward silence was interrupted by the arrival of Om and Rudy.
"Lets go home!Now!" Said Shivay and walked towards his car.

"Sumo, you had to see Anika didi run. She runs like the wind." Said Rudy as he recounted their adventure to a very amused Prinku and Saumya. "But didi, why were you running?" He asked.
"Oh I found Billuji's hanky outside Svetlana's home. Her dhobi dropped it and I wanted to ask him about it. So I was chasing him." Said Anika.
"What?" Asked Prinku, Saumy and Om in unison. "Shivay's hanky?" Asked Om.
"Yes. See!" Said Anika holding out the tiny white square for them to see. "He objects to me calling him SSO, but see what is here." She said bring their attention to the embroidered initials in blue.
"This is not Shivay's. He does not use hankys." Said Om.
"I know who's this is. It is Chote papa's!" Exclaimed Rudy and ran up to his room.
"He's lost it!" Said Om.
"No bhaiya." Said Saumya. "Rudy is right, SSO, Shakti Singh Oberoi." She added.
