There's something so beautiful about broken dreams, especially when one can hope for them to be patched up once more. It's a story of a failed first love, a bit of heart break, a pinch of betrayal and a whole lot of fate playing its card. It's a happy ending and most hopefully an enjoyable ride.
FORWARD
Kud ko tod saktha hoon tumhe toothe hue nahi dek saktha
Kud ko dhoka de sakta hoon, tumhe dhoka nahi de saktha
For four years and six months Gauri Sharma tried to forget those words, inked into the crumpled paper in her mehendi clad hand, with slender writing that she hated to recognize and the burning hole they left open in her heart. For the better part of those four and half years she believed she had been successful in doing just that, up until this moment when her eyes collided with a sharp, dark brown gaze.
Breath left her as memories rushed in.
"Gauri tu kitni lucky hai! A gushing voice of a friend.
"Koi apni dulhan ko aise bina karan toh chor ke nahi jaata na! A bitter old gossip.
"Kubsoorat ho, kabhi badalna math, a deep husky voice that she struggled to forget.
It had been raining that day, hadn't it? She was drenched by the time she returned to the darkened house and crawled into the silence of her room. Yes. Her teeth had been clattering.
Was that when she started to hate rain?
She used to love the drizzle, in those old childhood days in her village. She used to dance in the rain, arms spread wide in a juvenile attempt to hug the sheets of cold water pouring over her. She used to giggle out loud.
They had drenched together once. Goosebumps caressed her skin as she remembered his smoldering gaze. Yes. She hated the rain since then.
For the whole minute Gauri stood there reminiscing, Omkara didn't move either. His expression was that of a thirsty man finally finding a spring, or a wanderer finally finding god. Those eyes still spoke thousand words. Words she had once read all wrong. All these years she wished to see him, curse him, hit him, or to simply ask him what he thought she was? How was it so easy to cast her away, knowing what he meant for her? Knowing what she felt for him?
But words have long fled her and she stared at him, not knowing his expression was mirrored in her face. Tears stung her eyes and she felt her resolve weakening.
"Daddy! A whirl of lavender frills rushed past her and glued itself to his leg. Jerking awake from her broken thoughts Gauri looked down at the chubby cheeked toddler, fawning up at her father. Father...the thought burned another hole through her heart.
"Dhoka nahi de saktha, she muttered to herself the words finally making sense after so long. "Dhoka nahi de saktha...
Finally she had her answer. Finally she knew how insignificant she had been for him. Finally she knew how empty her dreams had been. Finally, she was completely broken. Yet the dignity held her together. Blinking the tears that threatened to ruin her makeup she turned away, hands balls into fists.
"Gauri! He called after her, too softly, too gently. She shook her head, the tears finally falling.
Ignored him and walked away, hopefully out of their lives, hopefully away from that heartache.
