Really happy to see another one of your writings! Aaand its got Gauri as a news reporter... Excited! 😃 ❤️
My guess for your character from IB in this story maybe Rudra if what you have written is sarcastically written or Shakti if you were serious there. 😛
Anyways looking forward to the rest.!
Love,
V 😊
Digs and Evie lives in my universe and also Real TV and their show Life and Lies is also from that world. I hope you enjoy!
Chapter 1
To chase your dreams
Heights had always made her feel alive. The rushing wind gently humming against her ear, brushing an escaped lock against her cheek; the way her heart would thump against her ribcage too eager to pump blood and excitement through her veins or simply the way the world below looked so little and insignificant; she loved it all.
Except a badly timed phone call. But there it was, vibrating against her hip inside the pocket of her tight fitting jeans and here she was hanging by a rope secured around her waist, ten floors up in the air - right outside the window of a VIP suite - and Digs has to phone her out of all people in the sweet serene world below!
Gauri cursed softly, before shifting her weight so that the edge of her boot balanced on the iron ledge of the window and gripping the rope with one hand reached for her Bluetooth device to receive the call.
" If you love pancakes you can order them," she hissed swinging from the rope. "There's no need to make one out of me."
"Where are you?" Digs being Digs was completely immune to her sarcasm. "Evie's hopping mad here."
"You can tell her to -" She bit off the rest of her sentence. " Tell her I'm merrily swinging from a rope fifteen floors above the ground."
"Fifteen floors are you freaking insane? What are you doing there?"
"Getting Evie her god damn story," Gauri gritted her teeth. "Now it won't come hiring a taxi straight to her cabin will it?"
"Don't tell me, you're fixing cameras once again?"
"Shall I hung up Antharyaami baba Digs? You can foresee the rest yourself."
"Wait, wait Gauri why are you trying to get yourself killed?" Digs sounded concerned and wary at the same time. "Is a show worth dying for?"
"Yes Yes Mr. Dignesh it is worth dying for, at least for me." She exhaled deeply. "Now if you really wanna see me down alive, say good bye to mama like a good boy and manage Evie for a little while. I'll be back as soon as I can."
"But, Gauri listen.."
"Beep Beep!"
She disconnected the call before Digs could impart some more wisdom. He stared at the phone for a minute and slamming it down on his desk checked his drawer.
"I don't even have money to bail her out, if she gets herself arrested again," he collapsed on his chair with a groan. "Dear lord, what were you smoking when you were creating her?"
A heavy fist landed on his desk with a thud, making Digs open a weary eye - go white - and prop up to his feet. In front of him stood a bean pole woman, with a bobby cut mop of brown hair and round glasses on the tip of her nose. The way her eyes gleamed and the corner of her mouth twitched told Digs that he was in for trouble - with a capital T.
Evie watched him, arms crossed and nose in the air for a full minute before clearing her throat.
"Where is she?"
"Um who are you looking for Boss?" Too innocent, that voice was absolutely a red flag to the bull, Digs slapped himself mentally.
"I'm looking for that aafat who is assisted by you Dignesh, where is she?"
"Uh - she is, um - Boss, the thing is - look - this has a perfectly logical explanation."
Uninvited Evie dragged his chair and sat down, watching him through the spectacles that had slid to the very tip of her nose, her lips pursed.
"It better does," her tone was icy. "For Gauri has promised me a break through story for the Life and Lies new season, which she failed to produce me yet. Remind me how many days do we have till the launch Dignesh?"
"A week Boss," swallowed Digs.
"And remind me why we don't have the concept ready yet?"
"Because we are looking for a sensational story -"
"Wrong!" Evie snapped liked a school teacher. "Because your friend thinks she deserves to be the show's face and to prove herself she wanted to bring the story herself. Which, let me remind you she has -"
"Done!" Gauri was running towards them, half sliding through the white tiles of the floor, sending an unsuspecting Rakesh flying with his papers, her hair a mess, clothes smudged with dirt and flashing a pen drive at them. "I got your story Boss!"
"Hump!" Evie stood up, arms still crossed and forehead creased.
"Trust me Evie, you're going to kiss me, once this goes on air and we get sky rocketing rates! You won't believe how sensational, how unbelievable, how marvelous a discovery I've made! This is work of a life time, I tell you this is -"
"A name please?" Evie sounded fed up of her excitement. "Or are we supposed to do an anonymous feature?"
"Omkara Singh Oberoi," breathed Gauri, a hand over her heart. "The demon behind the angelic mask."
"Right!" Evie said darkly. "Collect your termination letter from my cabin in a couple of hours, I don't pay nutters Gauri!"
She marched away and Gauri chased after her, managing to corner her before she reached her cabin. Not sure what else to do, Digs followed them. Gauri threw her arms over the cabin door, blocking Evie from entering and arranged her face to her best - clinically proven - puppy dog expression.
"One chance, Boss - give me five minutes to show you what I've uncovered. Or more like, got covered, cause it's all in here" she waved the pen drive in front of Evie's nose.
"I don't know if you love your job or not Gauri, but I love mine," stated Evie. "Omkara Oberoi won't blink before making sure we both ends up on road. You know he is - not a guy to mess up with, see what he did with his brothers - his own brothers for God's sake!"
"Exactly Evie, don't you think a man like that is worth exploring," Gauri said dreamily circling Evie like a movie director, her hands waving. "Imagine how dark his heart could be, how bitter his secrets - which we can reveal to the world, his life and his lies, on Life And Lies new season."
Evie exhaled.
"Fine," she sounded defeated. Gauri piped up, she knew that Evie had only one weakness, her love for good ratings. She would get her head shaved if someone says it would bring some 5+ rating to all her shows. "Show me what you've got."
"That's the spirit Boss!"
It took them some minutes to get the video on the pen drive run on Gauri's laptop. The three of them watched, glued to the tiny screen, inside Evie's sound proof cabin. Finally shutting the laptop with a snap, Evie turned to Gauri, her frowning.
"Let's say I forget for a moment you fixed cameras in an absolutely private conference room, spied on a meeting that was supposed to be utterly confidential - they can sue our channel - and hypothetically you forgot to attach a microphone so we can here one damn word that's being spoken - let me ask you this, what the hell does this mean?"
"Oh Boss, wasn't it you who always said, read between the lines? Now see between the frames!" Gauri Exclaimed. "You said it yourself a minute ago, this what he did with his brothers! Especially Shivay Singh Oberoi...this what he did-"
"He chased him away. Their spite made headlines for weeks," snorted Evie. "They called it modern day Ramayana -"
"Ramayana!" Gauri banged her fist on Evie's desk. "Now tell me from which angle does this look a Ramayana to you? If it is a Ramayana, what can Shakti Oberoi possibly have to do with the man who chased his only son away from his home? Most importantly why would he console him, as it is evident in the tape? Why would Omkara Oberoi look so down, when he literally has the world at his feet? Trust me Evie, these guys are fooling us. Something very different from what we thought is happening and we have the golden opportunity of bringing it out with Life and Lies. Nothing could fetch you more ratings than this, Oberois are always high on drama content!"
"It is all very interesting," Evie agreed, narrowing her eyes. "But I'm not interested in putting myself through courts once he cases us. We're not using this tape."
Gauri's face fell for a second, then brightened up again.
"I'll bring you another - a less illegal one."
"No," her tone was firm. "Nothing illegal."
"But Boss!" Gauri whined and then balled her fists. "Fine, what if I get you an interview of OSO?"
Evie raised an eyebrow, her lips pursed to a straight line.
"What exactly is running on your mind? Because I know for a fact he is not going to confess anything, or speak with any reporter."
"Leave that to me, what if I bring you his story in his words?"
"And I play no part in whatever you do, if you get jailed I'm not even visiting."
"Done. Agreed. What if I bring you this, the real thing, with all the juicy stuff?"
"Then the show is yours!" Evie stretched out her hand for Gauri to shake.
"Challenge accepted!" Gauri beamed gripping Evie's bony hand in hers.
