Chapter 6: In the name of all things sweet - Revenge, Payback and Hearts
I slid into the chair between Prinku and Soumya and tried hard to make sure I would be ignored for the next half hour or so. The girls kept looking at me and giggling which did not help my cause at all. But more than them it seemed like Shivvay was not going to let up and let me be.
"So Mrs. Oberoi, where are you off too this afternoon?" Shivvay inquired cutting up his omelet while his piercing gaze never left my face.
"You're going out Annika?", Bade Papa inquired. "That's nice. Take the driver with you. It can get very difficult with the traffic nowadays to commute back and forth. He will help you with the bags as well."
"Bags??! What bags??!!", asked Pinky Aunty suspiciously
"Shopping bags Pinky ... what else?" replied Papa
"Why do you need to go shopping?" asked Pinky Aunty. "It's not like Shivvay or we are going to take you anywhere to any function."
There was a collective gasp from the young ones at the table, A snicker from Tia, a coughing fit from Papa and Bade Papa, an unbelieving "what!" yelled by Dadi and a disappointed "Pinky!!" from Badi Ma.
"What??!!", asked a very sarcastic Pinky Aunty. "You guys are reacting to what I said as though it is a lie. Isn't it better that she does not live under any illusions?"
I smiled at Pinky Aunty and spoke in my sweetest voice,"I do not live under any illusions Pinky Aunty, trust me. Someone who has had a life as mine lives in the real world because sometimes what the real world throws at you can be pretty surreal too. But I don't have time to explain that to you today so I am just going to reiterate what I said the day after the reception to you."
At this point I turned with a cold stare towards Shivvay and Tia, "I am here at Dadi's request and as everyone knows I can never refuse her. I do not care to be Mrs. Annika Oberoi to the world or even within these walls but because I was forced into this relationship by your darling son on his terms and conditions I will stay in the relationship and end it on my terms and conditions. I do not expect a single thing either from you or him but I do expect basic respect and, please be clear, I will not compromise on that."
A very nervous Tia fidgeted under my hard gaze and a very amused Shivvay looked from me to her, eyebrow arched, elbows on the table and fingers making a steeple over his plate.
"That does not answer MY question Mrs. Annika Shivvay Singh Oberoi", he challenged, joining my name with his on purpose, his eyes steady and blue.
"It did Mr. Oberoi in case you were not paying close attention. I do not care to be Mrs. Annika Oberoi to the world or within these walls hence I do not have to answer you".
Shivvays eyes turned a steely blue at that and his jaw clenched.
"What does it matter where she goes Billu?", questioned Dadi. "She is not a prisoner here that she needs to sign in and sign out on the attendance book. You go puttar, don't worry about him"
"Excuse me!", I muttered as I left the table my breakfast still unfinished and untouched.
"What Bhaiya!!",I heard DevRu complain in a disappointed voice as I turned to walk away. "You didn't even let her eat and it was her favorite omlete. We took so much trouble to prep all the stuff for her."
"Anni..", Om called out after me. "Anni, listen..."
"Good job Shivvay.. you have this uncanny talent to ruin her day without even making an effort. Brilliant I must say", he threw the accusation at Shivvay.
"Di.. ", Soumya called out
"I'll take it to her", I heard Prinku say as I heard her come after me.
I walked with Prinku to the backyard my eyes smarting with unshed tears. As we took the seat on the bench in the wildflower garden she took my hand in hers and gave me a pleading look.
"What now Prinku?", I asked in a tired voice
"Please eat your breakfast. I know if I leave for college without making sure you eat you are going to completely skip it", she pouted
I smiled and took the plate from her and began taking small bites. A few minutes later we saw a smiling Sunaina approaching with a tray containing Prinku's breakfast and two steaming hot cups of tea.
As she moved to the side to set it down on the intricately carved garden table I saw Shivvay retreating back to the house a few feet away. I knew he was worried about Prinku's breakfast and indicated with a nod that she eat as well.
Breakfast done and Prinku already off to college I had to leave the house soon as well for my appointment. As I walked into the living room I was shocked to see Shivvay still at home working on his laptop in the living room seated next to Bade Papa.
It was uncanny how similar the two were - it was like seeing father and son not uncle and nephew. Shivvay glanced up at my approach and then went back to his screen with a slight smile. So the Bagad Billa was guarding the exit was he? That man could be so stubborn and sneaky it was downright disgusting.
I sat beside Badi Ma who indicated towards Shivvay and then tapped her slim Patek Philippe that encircled her wrist. I smiled and nodded with my usual Annika hand wave that I would take care of the matter. Bade Papa shut his laptop with a light slam and announced that he was leaving and was Shivvay coming to the office today?
The Bagad Billa stretched his arms lithely over his head in an almost feline way and stifled a tiny yawn before he stated that he was taking the day off and working from home today.
Really!?? Inquired Bade Papa, looking towards me with a knowing grin, and shaking his head in mock disappointment that marriage had made a 'good for nothing' of Shivvay who now preferred sparring with his witty wife as opposed to cutting devious business deals. The response to that was a grin that was equally catlike and dangerous, with Shivvay stating that he was only looking after the most liable and precious asset the Oberois had presently and had no intention of losing sight of it anywhere in the near future.
"Oh! is that so Mr. Oberoi", I thought. We shall see about that.
I excused myself and went off to our room to get my weapon of distraction and revenge from my cupboard. Payback time Mr. Oberoi and you won't even know what hit you I smiled an evil smile. Now for a trip to my unlawful mother-in-law's room for the first phase of the plan.
"May I come in Pinky Aunty?" I stood outside her room while she and Tia were frantically scanning wedding magazines.
To cut a long story short this is what I suggested she do. I did not need this wedding planning book as much she did now and it was obviously of no use to me, but I thought she could have it if she wanted it. The details of everything Tia and Pinky Aunty had approved were in here and would be helpful to them with their plans. The only thing missing were recommendations and choices from Shivvay as I never managed to ever pin him down long enough to get them from him.
I moaned about how difficult he was to pin down and get some answers from and the statement was met by a vigorous affirmative shake of her head and a couple of "O My Mata's" as well.
I then turned to Tia and suggested that the best way I found was to tear him away, even if it was for a few minutes, from his laptop and phone and sit him down like a kid in detention in Aunty's room to get his full attention. They should try that as it just might work. Tia's face lit up and with a small clap of her hands she was off to drag the Bhagad Billa from his guard station at the entrance and upstairs to Aunty's room.
I turned and walked out behind Tia with Pinky Aunty 'blessings' and 'thank yous' following me downstairs. I was not going to miss this for the world. Shivvay Singh Oberoi was going to spend the major part of his morning, thanks to my unselfish generosity, planning his upcoming wedding and was that not peachy. Payback Time Mr.Oberoi
I sauntered into the living room behind the melodious calls of 'Shivvay Baby' preceding me and took the best seat in the house because the entertainment was just about to begin.
Tia stood before a Shivvay furiously typing on his laptop and tapped her expensively shoed Gucci foot. It took him a good few minutes to register that she was standing before him.
"Yes??!!", he inquired innocently. Aww! Poor Shivvay Baby I thought as I looked at him with a slight smile, he is not going to know what hit him.
Tia shut the laptop with a firm thud and took it from his lap. Then she confiscated the phone that was lying next to him and proceeded to walk away with a very stunned Shivvay wearing a look of disbelief. Badi Ma looked at me with one immaculately arched eyebrow raised questioningly and was rewarded by an impish grin.
"Fhat the wuck!!!", shouted a very upset Shivvay
"Watch that Language Mr. Oberoi!!", I reprimanded with a stern look that would shame the strictest of professors.
"Not now Annika!!", he glared, "wrong time to pick a fight."
And with that he strode off crossly after a Tia, who was already sashaying halfway up the stairs, with his laptop and phone firmly in her hands.
I looked at Badi Ma with a naughty smile and indicated that we make our exit.
She was shaking with uncontrolled laughter at the scene she had just witnessed and inquired about what had just happened. I told her I would get her up to speed once we were safely out of the house.
After all since I am India's leading businessman's wife I play by his rules - I repay everything with Interest I laughed.
