Disclaimer- I have to lent out my frustration on ruin of my favorite show. So, no bashing. Criticism is welcome unless it's not personal attack.
And the title says it all & people here know the direct reference. Just now I saw New Arohi's pics for the upcoming track & the dressing blew up my mind.
There is a very thin line between the two & that line is modesty. You can't wear any dress everywhere. Dressing influences the environment around you & it's important that it matches with the tone. It tells a lot about your position & you as a person & that's why it makes a huge part of the first impressions about a person.
Just like you can't wear a saree on a beach, you can't wear a bikini or any revealing dress in temple or church or on a formal occasion.
"Just like men look best when dressed in formals, women look best dressed in modern yet elegant dressing."
Indian TV is not new to actresses cladding modern dresses. Almost every other show has that. It's the typical way to stereotype the villain in most of the cases but the trend has changed over few years.
Jennifer in Beyhadh as Maya clad some of the most modern & hottest dresses but none of them were obscene or vulgar.
Aliya in Kumkum Bhagya always wear modern dresses but they are not obscene.
Lovely in Kulfi Kumar Bajewala, Pankti in Tu Aashiqui, Ruhi in Yeh Hain Mohabbatein, Naira in YRKKH, Nia in Jamai Raja, Nandini in Silsila and the examples are numerous. All of these actresses are known for having experimented with subtle modern dresses which accent their beauty without revealing unnecessarily. Nia wore very modern dresses in Jamai Raja and they looked good as her character developed over time. But it's not working here. Arohi, even when played Tara brought her own taste to that dressing with sarees.
Now coming to IMMJ, Alisha has clad modern dresses in this show both as Tara and as Arohi & they were very subtle and modest. Watching in her in those dresses won't force you to avert your eyes or try hard to not look into certain way.
I have no problem with the skin show but it's not a western show, it's an Asian show and most of the Asian shows are known for modern but very elegant dressing sense without obscene skin show. Look at Korean, Chinese, Turkish shows, they are so subtle when it comes to modern dressing.
Nia's idea of sexiness is certainly about revealing more and it's fine on a movie or a web series when the character demands but here as Arohi who is already a well established character, she has just destroyed it. Arohi's character was known for modesty, innocence & subtle behavior even in her worst moments, her pain and suffering, and Nia has destroyed almost every single trait that was associated with her. She didn't get into the skin of Arohi's character and simply made out a completely different Arohi who can't be related with.
Nia could play neither Tara nor Arohi in this show as replacement. It would have been absolutely fine if she played a completely different new character of Anjali only.
And I say so, because Alisha already established & moulded both these character in certain ways & replacing her to play the very same characters would simply destroy them.
Alisha as Arohi- Innocent, Naive, Modest & later smart, and strong, still intact with her previous virtues. Her portrayal made you relate with her. It was not loud & you could feel and connect with it.
Alisha as Tara- Modern, Smart, Stylish, cunning, evil with madness & dangerous in everything she did, moving, walking, talking and what not. Her act is effortless & she doesn't over do it.
And Nia can never fit in these parameters of the basic traits of these character as replacement. She will bring certain differences when replaced. And that's why I am not a fan of replacements because they destroy the original characters except for in some rare cases only. The whole idea of revamp & replacement was the stupidest idea ever especially when the actress who was originally playing it is still there in the show. They could have approached the story in completely different way if they had wanted to end one of the Alisha's character but this isn't just working. Nia detaches me from Arohi. I don't feel like watching Deep-Arohi-Tara trio. It's a completely different trio altogether.
Nia was great as Alia Mukherjee in Twisted. That was her role. Maya was Jennifer's role. Arohi/Tara is Alisha's role. No one can play these character better than the actresses who originally played them. They are not comic book characters who can be played multiple times, these are shows & shows belong to original characters. Remakes work only for new generation who has never seen the past work.
I am not die hard fan or hater of either Nia or Alisha but some roles can be played best or better by certain actors only. Not every role can be played by everyone with that much conviction. There is a reason why casting is a very important process. Ekta Kapoor would have not auditioned thousands of girls for Jodha's character to make it more convincing if casting anyone worked in the industry. EK would have had 100s of actresses who could have played Jodha but she brought a new, unpopular face. Or she could have taken anyone to play Akbar instead of Tokas but she didn't. If soap queen herself & industry in general gives so much attention to casting, then there must be something huge in it to ponder upon. And casting a lead replacement is all the more of a bigger deal in a well established, popular show.
I have always been a fan of Patnaiks' shows because of their beautiful representation of stroylines that were different, be it Sadda Haq, KRPKAB or IMMJ. With each show I have had my ups & down but never was I forced to stop watching the show like IMMJ after a revamp. One week into revamp & I know I can't bear it anymore. But this show will always go down in a favorite show of mine for its unique storyline in the beginning I had never seen on ITV before. Well, now it doesn't make sense anymore with heap of inconsistencies & track closures.
