Viplav was standing at the door of 'Tarini Vidhwa Ashram' in that heavy rainy night. He waited for two minutes but no one opened the door. He was about to press the 'calling bell' again when the door finally opened in front of him...
A bright tubelight was glowing inside. In that light Viplav saw a tall, slim girl standing in front of him. He could not see her face clearly as it was complete dark outside with no street light. Before the girl could say or ask anything, Viplav took a step forward and entered inside. The girl was shocked but had no other option but to move sideways. A few women who were present in the room were also shocked to see a young boy suddenly entering inside their house. Before they could say a word or protest, Viplav said,
"Sorry, I am really very sorry to disturb u all at this late night. But before u kick me out please listen to me first. Standing outside I was getting wet, so I rushed inside without taking ur permission.
Actually my car broke down and I am unable to drive to my home. Its raining heavily outside and its not safe to spend a whole night outside in my car. Please let me stay here for some time and wait for the rain to stop. I promise I will go away as soon as the rain stops", Viplav said all these in one go and stopped to take a breadth.
A few seconds of silence prevailed in the room while Viplav waited for someone to speak. An aged woman finally broke the silence and said, "You want to stay here for a night? Only ladies live here. We cant allow any boy to stay for a night"
"Not for a night Nani, Only for a few hours till the rain stops...You all are looking at me as if I am a thief. I am a well mannered guy and have no wrong intentions. Please believe me and try to understand"
A middle aged woman of around 40 said, "We are widows"
"So? I dont have a problem...emm I mean so what? I just want shelter for a few hours"
"But we are widows"
"So what Kaki?" Viplav was hell confused.
"We are widows". Viplav sensed that everytime she was putting more stress on the word 'widow'. The woman continued, "People consider us to be untouchables then why do u have to stay here?"
"Because I dont have any other option kaki".
Another woman now spoke in a much sensible tone, "Ok if u dont have any problem then we too dont have any. Leave it Dulari, let him stay. He will go away when the rain will stop"
Viplav took a sigh of relief and thought to himself, "What all kinds of people are there in this world? Convincing these ladies are tougher than my medical entrance..Uff ".
Viplav sat on a bench and take a look around. He noticed that all the women present there were in plain white sarees... There were aged, middle aged women and a few young girls.
At last Viplav looked at the girl who had opened the door for him. She was standing at a corner near the door and was looking at him but immediately turned away when Viplav noticed her.
Most of the ladies dispered to their bedrooms. The sensible lady adressed someone and said, "You four, finish off ur work soon and come to bed. Its already past 12". Saying this she went upstairs.
Viplav now looked at the four girls who were ordered to finish their work. Three girls were sitting on the floor, busy stitching something.
The other girl in white, who had opened the door, now picked up a piece of cloth and needle, sat beside the other three and got busy in her work.
For the first time Viplav looked at her carefully. She was wearing a plain white saree just like the other women in the house. She had got long fair silky hair upto her waist which was left open but she had got a veil over it. He looked at her fair arms and beautiful long fingers which were busy stitching. Viplav had many female friends and colleagues who were beautiful but this girl was very beautiful, he thought to himself.
It was really awkward to sit in someone's house and stare at their young girl.. He looked away and laid down on the bench and closed his eyes.
The girls looked up at him to see him sleeping, they looked at each other. Viplav could hear one of them giggle and whispered, "It was great that she had opened the door. Anyone else would not have allowed him to jump inside and we would have missed the chance of serving a handsome guest... He is quite handsome, isnt it??"
"Shut up Rajlaxmi. He is not quite handsome, but very very handsome", the other one giggled too.
Viplav's eyes were closed but he was carefully listening to their convos. He felt quite nervous within himself listening to the girls' conversations who were continuously discussing about him.
"But only three of them are chatting..Why is the fourth girl silent?" Viplav thought to himself, "Is she that pretty girl who is maintaining her silence and not uttering a word?"

God knows when he fell asleep thinking about all these and for how many hours he slept when suddenly he woke up with a start hearing someone screaming..
"Aiyoo Dada!! He is still here. The rain stopped long back but he did not go".
Viplav hurriedly stood up.
"I am sorry Kaki. Thanks to you all so much for letting me stay here for the night. Now I will take leave. Byee and Thank You again",
Saying this Viplav proceeded towards the door but stopped to turn back and look for her... But the pretty girl was no where to be seen. Viplav himself did not know why he was suddenly feeling sad, not to find her there. He smiled at the other ladies, bid them a "Byee" and finally came out of the house but again stopped at the main gate to see the girl, he was looking for, standing in the garden and watering the plants. He stood there, kept staring at her back for a while . The girl turned back to look at him and caught him stealing glances. She hurriedly put the bucket down, adjusted her veil and stood still, lowering down her eyes.
"Thank You for helping me. Byee.. Will see you again", saying this viplav came out of the main gate to look for an auto or taxi, thinking to himself why did he urge to see her again??
