helooo com'e here you.. good to see you😛
As usual your take shines with grace and eloquence. I loved your turmeric symbolism as a pre-marriage rite. Interestingly, it is also a post marriage rite. When the bride enters the marital house for the first time, she leaves vermilion and turmeric prints of her hands on a wall by the entrance. This symbolizes that the bride is an auspicious omen, and by leaving her hand prints, she is ushering in, with her entry, an era of prosperity and abundance for the marital family.
ohhh thanks for pointing this out.. makes sense after marriage handprint
Likewise, Viplav, with his entry and palm-press, has ushered in abundance and prosperity in the realm of thinking. The "D" widows, Dulari and Dhani, due to their unfortunate circumstances, and because of being shunned by the society, suffer from poverty of thinking and scarcity mentality. They see the world in 3 D --Deception, Despair, and Disillusionment. Therefore, nothing can be just uncomplicated and enjoyable, for often it is analysed to death and everything is first rejected before it can be accepted and enjoyed.
this is so relevant to the story sequence.. viplav was indeed a breath of fresh air..
Starting with the paint job at the ashram and ending in Vip's marriage proposal, everything is suspect. The D Duo is not only hard on themselves, but also rub off on one another --usually the influence of the older D is seen and mirrored in the younger one.
It is no wonder then, away from the harsh realities and daily reminders of widowed life, Dhani blossomed in Gazipur. There she was incognito. No one knew her. Bereft of her whites, she had a new birth, where she dared to grow into a new womanhood, self-discovered and self-defined. She understood Vip from her own vision, uncluttered by social mores and familial pressures, and she liked what she saw. She cared for him, nursed him back to health. The synergy between Vip and Dhani grew along with her increasing level of comfort with her Vakil Babu. She felt safe with him, safe enough to pose as his wife without any qualms whatsoever.
change of scenery .. did so much good for her.. but it was only temporary. At the end of the day dhani returns and faces her reality.. viplav has yet to know what dhani wants..
Back at the ashram after surviving a traumatic lynching incident, it is no surprise that Dhani refuses Viplav. She shuns off the safety and reciprocity of the relationship in favor of what is familiar --Dulari, widowhood, and ashram life. Being punished for flouting even the slightest of societal norms is terrifying, especially for Dhani, who has had the unfortunate distinction of being the Most Harrassed Widow of Benaras! Therefore, after surviving a mad mob ready to violate and immolate her, Dhani retreats, and hides behind what is familiar --her catatonic icy non-smiling look, her pristine whites, and her mother. These are a few of her favorite things, when bad karma bites, when society stings, and when she is feeling sad.
yes and as once viplav pointed out to her.. after geting a licking outside dhani would always return home.. to its sanctuary
In a previous post our Premparbat made an eloquent and creative case for the scene where Vip takes off the gilded shawl of the back of a rather surprised Dasharath and wraps it tightly on Dhani. Premparbat said that this symbolised the unmasking of the wily Dasharath. I would like to take the shawl metaphor further still and say that the shawl symbolises the composite attitudes of social misogyny, conservative and patriarchal views of how women should lead their lives. Dhani's donning of this mantle of deadbeat and outdated beliefs in the form of the shawl indicates that she has not only internalised, but is suffocatingly trapped in DT's commanding view of women and widows in particular. It is interesting that the well-intentioned Viplav sends Dhani back to her mai wrapped in Dada's shawl. It is almost as though she is in-between the rock of patriarchal beliefs and the hard place of her mother's despair.
yes absolutely true.. and what's sadly true is many such cases like dhani slip through the net and die , devalued in despondency
It was with a great comfort that I saw Dhani return DT's shawl in yesterday's episode. It has to be a good omen. Until this omen comes true, and Dhani emerges from the grip of the ghosts of the past and the ghouls of the present, Viplav will be tortured emotionally, and so will the viewers who care about him.
yes its this side of the story that interests me the social backlash on the vulerable
