IKRS 30th September 2015 ep 45 My Take

In life many times we mean well for others and if we have the means we tend to give others a pleasant surprise, which somehow turns out to be an intrusion on our part. We then regret our folly which instead of imparting joy ends up being a bolt from the blue. Then comes the time for re-evaluation why do such simple joys fail to materialize as they are originally planned to do so.? one of the reasons can be that we tend to be carried away by our own enthusiasm which often clouds the options of how the other party would take to the surprise.. the effect could well be adverse, as opposed to thrill which we feel and plan to give. It's called putting one's foot in one's mouth! The episode deals with issues like Ashram over hauling, sentimental value.. mixed with breaking the norms being white washed.. facing some truths.

Being his guest..and conveniently he disappears! the sight of the bill clearly throws the widows and all sorts of tales regarding no payment come up to their attentions like having to do the dishes in the kitchen. Luckily for them, the waiter turns up and informs them that bhaiya ji had paid dues already and left a message for them to go their rooms and that he'll see them tomorrow.

Pay-back time.. it's crack of dawn at Dashrant's home Sushma the first mistress offers tea to the lord of the manor who decides to make this early morning tea ceremony into further lashes on the self- willed DIL Kanak..he overly praises Sushma's invigorating ginger tea which he tastes after quite sometime.. he woos Sushma and proclaims her as his wife .. all the more to annoy Kanak who waits in the shadows with a cup of tea for him. Dashrant annoys Kanak further by reminding his wife that he married her according to the faith rites and norms. He continues to lash Kanak as he tells Sushma that during the marriage ceremony a wife stands to the left of her husband to indicate she belongs in his heart! and that she alone resides in his heart and he breaks into the song that defines his mysterious bond with Kanak.. without you my heart is not happy.. that is it! Kanak exits from the room and goes straight back to her room.. Shambu can see his wife is displeased and he jeers, someone hurled a sparkler and the whole place ignited!the reference here is to Tripurari who bent Dashrant ears and he explodes on Kanak! and she slyly approaches him to persuade his father to kindly look upon her.. Shambu ,the faithful loving son beams with mirth and confesses ,why would he interfere as after ages he sees his mother is given the rightful honour and respect she deserves from her husband, his fasther Dashrant! In a huff she leaves her room while Shambu smiles and says I can smell burning!

Back in the room its packing all their gear and getting ready to checkout. Viplav arrives and is pleased that they are packed ready to leave.. brilliant! lets go and Dhani asks yes lets, now that your work of pasta control is done and Viplav replies yes, I had to get it done otherwise you'd eat me alive! and the truth is I looove my life so got everything done he says as he gives Dhani a look that Dulari catches on too he continues and now your Ashram is ready and awaits your arrival .. and another thing I am your lawyer already but am happy to be your site cleaner too! so if we're ready shall we leave? and Dhani mutters to Rajlaxmi.. now have to think about one thing only how to get this rakhsas out of the Ashram! they weave their way back to the Ashram and as soon as they open the front door

voila! Are we at the right place? one by one they come in astounded by the massive decorative overhaul inside.. the younger ones receive what they see in as a happy alternate! the older ones are apprehensible Dhani stands aghast as she says the whole courtyard painted in turquoise ,white ,terracotta, brown, black!.. she is gobsmacked! Dulari and Inderani are confused as they look around at the scale of the decoration. In silence they all take in this foreign place. Viplav comes down the stairs and announces, right! I made sure all the wood worm and the dry rot was sorted!and now here before you is your new Ashram!! but all the faces who the Ashram really belongs to are unsmiling and grave...mind you Rachna and Raj laxmi appear pleased are they more progressive than the others? Viplav suggests now lets take a picture of all in the new Ashram! Rajlaxmi and Rachna pose around ,but Dulari goes in a huff to the Ashram door and shuts it rudely.. as if to shield from the outside world what is happening within the four walls of the Ashram.. it seems by the faces of Dhani ,Dulari ,Inderani,Sita maa..that something untoward is about to happen.. that which Viplav doesn't have a clue about..after she returns , in seeing the girls posing and laughing for the picture Dulari blows a fuse! Stop it! what are you up too? what was the need to get all this painting decorating? you told us something else when you took us from here! you know by this action of yours the people outside will badmouth us! they'll say the widows are preparing for a wedding! There's a limit to everything!.. as if this telling off is not enough for Viplav .. then Dhani too starts, what do you want to show to us by doing all this to our Ashram? how would you feel if some came and changed your house!! and you said paste control was happening! and how did you dare to change our Ashram to a different colour? what do you want to prove? You act like you're are a well wisher.. then why do keep doing us favours repeatedly? What do you want? and I suppose you'll charge us for all this too? screams Dhani.. but then Dulari approaches him with folded palms.. look child I really don't know what you had in mind when you did all this? but I want you to understand one thing.. this Ashram belongs to the widows. .and apart from the colour white there is no other colour in our life! and we like the colour white and are happy to live this way !and this society has made many rules for widows ,that we have to be follow ,for if we don't you can't imagine what we have to listen too such insults! So I plead before you! for god sake don't do any more! so that we don't have to bear all what we hear! Viplav replies calmly kaki have you seen outside and around the Ashram? what's happening in the world? how life moves on?but you people are still hanging on to age old traditions.. have you ever asked your selves why you are leading such a life? I only tried to add a bit of colour.. then Inderani came forward and says , you will be feeling that I did so much for these people.. they should be grateful to me..but the truth is that my child.. we prefer our old discoloured ,dilapidated Ashram ,thing is we were used to it, we've been here for so long.. I accept that change is necessary.. but change within a certain limit is better. we 're widows my child.. and our space is very limited and we cannot deny this reality.. to accept this limit is our only option there is no other way ! and we adhere to our rules because it gives us an excuse to live and gives us our protection too.. and Dulari about this colour, we'll discuss it later..come on then everyone let's get to work..Viplav is left stands alone in the courtyard and he muses ,good heaven's I' eve made a mistake I only wanted them to be happy and they are all angry..

Viplav's mistake as he confesses to himself is that he fails to see that people feel sentimental toward how they get they're place decorated, they have strong links with their environment especially if they are residents at an address for years ,the dcor becomes close to the heart. Having someone else, an outsider come and without consulting the residents especially about colour schemes and preferences can be an area for sure to cause dissension. For the widows the change has a horrendous impact. They feel lied to, as Viplav failed to ask them beforehand about what he was planning to do? he is made to see where he went wrong , that whatever he did they were ready for. They obviously were not! he misjudged the situation. Also calling it new Ashram several times makes the feel he disregarded their memories in the Ashram and was imposing his taste over them Now in my opinion I think Viplav may use pictures of an overhauled Ashram to the advantage of the widows to show how well the widows kept this place in comparison to what the Ashram looked like when it was first given to the widows.. with regard to widows wearing white ..he needs to be aware however negative. that it is like a uniform for them ,a designated colour, like saffron robes ,or a dog collar of priest.. it may be pointed out that he is fighting against the negative strains associated with widows.. but Viplav also heard what Inderani has to say about their status ,it was a balanced view. So his run in with Dulari, Dhani and Inderani although harsh .. but still he learnt a lot about how they view things however decadent it may seem in these times.. Viplav came to learn more about them and in this scene it seems he did..

Sorting their stuff after decoration takes place and Sita maa cannot find her stuff. Dhani asks Viplav who stands outside the room.. Dhani is sharp with him and demands to know where the stuff is ,he replies he doesn't have a clue? she yells you dared to touch the stuff and he replies the pest control tend to put belonging outside th ehouse ,I told them to collect it and leave everything in this room! she fumes and he says due to your fury you can't see it ,someone else will find it for you and he calls rachu! And Dhani snubs him her name is Rachna and he replies yes it is and its too long and boring ,rachu is short and sweet isn't that so? and Rachna smiles and Raj laxmi comes and says what will you call me Raj? To which he says, I can't call you that as it reminds me of my friend Raj who has a moustache and beard! Then Dhani gets on his case and says, you may be generous but don't go around changing our names! we are simple folk with ordinary life style don't do any more have mercy on us !and he glares at her with lion like narrowed eyes then he growls at her , fine I am leaving and he walks away straight out of the front door as Dhani watches him leave..

Kanak chops vegetables at the dining table.. and muses what is happening in her life? Viplav goes and lives with the widows, babu ji has spurned her it's like out of the frying pan into the fire .. he's supporting his wife what is happening? and why bhole Nath? she looks up to the heavens. shalu comes crying and moans Ram has now been transferred ,she begs her mother to ask dada ji to stop Ram's transfer. kanak says she did but he said it was hard, dadi comes and shalu begs her grandma to influence dada ji . Kanak flies of the handle and says ask me I am your mother not her.. should be interesting to see if Dashrant pays heed to what Sushma request regarding Ram's transfer..

Viplav returns to the Ashram with a fixed expression on his face he carries a container of white emulsion paint in one hand a brush in the other. Dhani looks across at him ..he has a furrowed brow , all the widows watch him. Dulari looks at the paint in his hand.. what is this? why has he brought more paint? He glares at all then moves to a tree in the courtyard and opens the container, dips in the brush and begins to slap and brush white paint of the brown bark of the tree! all are nonplussed at his actions , what are you doing? asks an irate Dhani but he ignores her and carry's on stop! and she grabs the brush from him what nonsense are you up to? and he barks in her face ,a while ago you all said that white colour gives you joy! you get peace with white .so I am going to paint white colour everywhere! so all of you we more elated!!he yells and snatches the brush from her, give the brush to me! and begins to paint the bark again! and this time Dulari comes and tries to stop him from continuing! Why are you painting my tree and that too with white paint?? She yells and then he gets fed and says helplessly , what to do maa ji? I am so tired of reasoning things out with you all, that your thinking is not correct! maa ji creation has given us a a myriad of colours in our life then why do you follow old outdated misleading rites? Look according to nature you need food to survive don't you?? think of the colours in a wide variety of foods! You eat vegetables don't you? he asks Raj laxmi.. there are many colours of vegetables aren't there? and you! he goes to Dhani ,how many different coloured lentils do you eat? even the flowers you put on tulsis'idol have a range of different colours.. even the colour of our skins vary! then why do you limit your whole life to this white color? Why won't you change??..and Dhani looks up into his face with quizzical almost willingly eyes..

a great scene where Viplav fights the case for the inclusion of all colours to celebrate life.. not just white..he uses simple illustrations as examples to elucidate his point.. for simple down to earth folks he chooses day to day, natural examples out of the natures very own boon, which the widows can relate too..

a solid episode with substance.. he learns their perspective too.. Mishal was great when he was pounced on by the three biggies. D D I..

Hamlet53 1.10.15

Precap: Sita maa begs Viplav, for the love of god I beg you to give me back my photos and he says , I don't jnow anything about them and Dhani says where did they go then? hesays may be they have rotted and the workmen might have thrown it in the bin outside.. Dhani watches him rummaging through the bins with his bare hands..and he manages to find a picture of a man in uniform..

Great take and great episode. I must say that even the lives of the widows are quite colorful in this story.

What strikes me is the issue of patriarchy and iinternalized oppression. The widows are following rules because they are afraid of further being rejected by a harsh and cruel society. Already they have been thrown out by family members and looked upon by the masses with condescension and disdain. Being without means, they have to work for a living, and having the epithet of being impure means that what they can do to earn a decent living is rather limited. Under these circumstances, following the rules of patriarchy becomes a matter of security and survival for the widows. The slightest deviation is cause for gossip and trouble. As is the case with vulnerable sections of the population, once you start following the rules and dancing the tune of the hegemonic patriarchy, it as though becomes internalized, where the harshness and cruel judgements of the world are turned within and one starts to see oneself in the same light as others see one. This episode brings out the internalized oppression of the widows very well, where they become their own enemies and cannot allow themselves to enjoy a meal or appreciate artistic endeavors, such as the ashram makeover. Even Racchu and Rajlaxmi, the minority voices, who have not internalized the patriarchal rules quite as deeply, are silenced and frowned upon. This is how patriarchy functions. It only shackles the mind to think of itself as worthless. The rest of the work is done by the shackled mind, which puts a chain on the sense organs and the organs of action. In other words, one virtually enslaves oneself.

On the other end in Tripathi Bhavan, despite their wealth and status, things are not that different for the women of the household than what the widows are experiencing. Patriarchy does not discriminate. Although Kanak looks down upon the widows as impure and worthless, she herself is strangely in a similar situation, where the mahant, the patriarch looks down upon her.

Kanak's deviant behavior of shaming Dhani in public has landed her in the soup of major patriarchal disfavor. Dhani's act of fainting at the river ghat, and subsequently being saved by Viplav is both sexualized and criminalized by Kanak, and she is accused of leading Kanak's son astray with her wily ways. Kanak's renegade act of shaming Dhani, without the patriarch's permission, is likewise punished by Dashrath through the not-so-subtle tactics of divide and rule. Dashrath flirts with his wife, and croons melodies to her, while a broken hearted Kanak watches helplessly. Although Kanak, whose name means "gold" is quite rich and is usually dresses to resemble a mobile jewelry shop, she is terribly insecure of her place. Kanak knows that all the glitter and glamour of her life is meaningless without patriarchal approval. Her gold and her status can both be snatched without warning.

I found this contrast very telling, where it is not just the widows who are desperately worried about their recent non-conformity to the socio-patriarchal rules, but Kanak herself, who loathes the widows and looks down upon them, has strangely more in common with the widows that she would ever care to admit.

thank god I'm not the only one who thinks dash's relationship with his BR (bahu rani) is weird as fudge! theres something even more sickening brewing behind the surface of this show- their relationship is disturbingly oedipal (or i guess the electra complex here). 🤢

An impressive analysis as always, Hammie! The episode gave me a repetitive feeling, maybe coz Viplav was told off by the women in the ashram for colouring their walls. The initial disappointed feeling on Viplav's face was gradually replaced by a disheartened expression hearing out Dhani, Dulari's outbursts on the issue. He was dumbstruck especially with Badi Amma's speech as he considers her the most sensible lady there. Really loved his speech on how even the simple things in their day to day life is filled with colours. Don't know if it will make a change in them, but this way he at the least tries to express how different their life can be if they leave of their myths behind.

And today for the first time, I also felt Dhani overdid her hatred for Viplav. Her telling him off for calling Rachu was seriously not sensible, since he wasn't addressing her but someone else. Then why the unwanted hostile attitude? If it wasn't shown maybe the scene wouldn't have looked repetitive, I guess! Want more ViDha scenes with meaningful convos, and not mere cat an mouse fights.

DT and Kanak scenes are of bad taste as its showing how even a rude and cunning Kanak is largely dependent on DT! She need to be in his good books to be the decision maker she once was in the Tripathi's house! Want to assert the fact once again that you're an amazing writer, keep up the good work going👏

Hi Sudha, I felt the same yesterday..thats why i opend the post i did...they need to control the scene better and Ranchana is not a little girl, if she is ok with Viplav calling her Rachu its her business.

Thanks Hammie for writing this awesome post.
This episode was a message kind of an episode. But I didn't feel that cvs were giving us a lecture. The way Viplav used to prove his point of view was clever. And it left a big impress.
