What you think about Rishabh Pant as Delhi Capital captain?

Hi Guys,

I like Rishabh but you think he is ready for the captaincy?

Why was he chosen over senior players like Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, Dhawan and others who did so well in Australia / England Series.

And how easy it is for senior players to take instructions from someone so young?

Cheers,

Think the owners wanted a young Indian captain who is guaranteed a first team spot and is definitely likely to continue with the franchise for the next few years.

Steve Smith would be a decent choice captaincy wise, but he blocks one international spot (his T20 record isn't great either) and Stoinis/Woakes as a choice ahead of Smith would work better for the balance of the side. I'm assuming Rabada/Nortje as definite picks and Hetmyer as the third for his incredible power hitting.

Rahane isn't guaranteed a first team spot, otherwise he could have been captain.

They could've theoretically chosen Dhawan/Ashwin, but both are old. Dhawan doesn't exactly have captaincy experience either, and Ashwin could lose his spot to Axar once the latter is fit.

Plus Pant appears to have a bit of a Midas touch currently- everything he touches appears to turn to gold!

The first point for being a captain is being a fixed xi spot. If we analyse potential contenders only Pant is reliable option.

Dhawan was removed from SRH captaincy because of poor performance.

Smith doesn't even deserve a squad spot forget XI. He is not a T20 player. And with Rahane in team there is no place for a foreigner who does the same job.

Ashwin doesn't have a fixed spot. He maybe the greatest indian spinner in tests but very poor in LOIs. Also he can be replaced by Axar when he comes back. Like last game he was taken for plenty.

Rahane has the advantage of being indian but he is a liability in LOIs. He is playing only because Iyer got injured, there are better players than him in DC squad. Ripal Patel, Lalit Yadav, Vishnu Vinod all deserve chances above Rahane. Rahane's only good point is fielding.

Shaw has a fixed spot and fantastic form but he is very temperamental as is seen from Coach interviews or his social media updates.

That leaves only Pant. He has everything going for him. So much that the DC owner is publically lobbying for pant everywhere. He is the blue eyed boys of team owners. Also being a captain will help him understand the game more especially DRS. He is very poor in DRS. He could be next in line for captaincy after kohli since he is the only one with an all format xi spot.

Pant also has experience of domestic cricket captaincy so won't be a problem.

There is no set formula to find when to select someone to act as a captain. Some youngsters have done well as soon as they were made captains and some crumbled under the pressure. Rishab is doing well in all forms of the cricket, so, making him the captain is not a bad move. The seniors can use their experience and win the matches without an added duty of managing the team. If they are real team players, they should help Rishab until he settles.

I think his continuous performance in all forms of the game and his high strike rate fetched him the captain's cap in this season.

Earlier too many senior players played under their juniors without any problem , even if there are problems, they have to settle those in the dressing room itself, not to carry to the ground.

And just like Dhoni , he is a cool cap ! Look at his scoring---

I feel its a little too early for Rishabh Pant. And given the format of the T20 game you have to continuously look out for your field setup based on the situation of the game. And managing international players and handling situations where you are not on the same page as senior players.

No doubt Rishabh Pant has been performing well recently and I really wish he continues to do well as he can be a match winner in T20 World Cup for India.

BTW Today it was a nice start to Delhi Capitals campaign as they got a terrific start from their openers. The real test will be when the going gets tough and how he handles those situations.

Happy to participate in these discussions. Tagging more active people on this group so that they can also give their 2 cents on this.

Cheers,

Pant is playing for Delhi from start of his career and owners would have wanted that person would stick around in future too. He was wise captain for Delhi. Also his spot is confirmed in playing 11.

Steve Smith was not in good form as a captain and player both. He would also take one spot for international player. Rabada, Nortje and stoinis are sure shot playing 11. 4th spot they would want player who can hit shots in lower order. Smith is top order batsman. Also he looks confused in tough situations.

Rahane and Ashwin were removed from captaincy by RR and PBKS. So they were not DC's ideal choice.

Choices would have been between Pant and Dhawan. Dhawan doesn't have captaincy experience, whereas Pant have little bit experience as he was caption of Delhi in Ranji trophy for some time.

Delhi Capital's captaincy and Indian cricket team's captaincy are two different things.

Do you think franchises have any interest in national cricket team? I don't think so.

It is a business for them at the end of the day. They buy the best players from the pool and try to profit as much as possible.

If Franchises have any interest in national cricket team or plans to nurture national team members, they would not pick international players as their captains. In fact, good National cricket players are resigning from national teams to extend their stints with IPL.

If the question is, is it too early to make Rishabh Pant Delhi capital's captain, then the answer is not really.

He is playing well in all formats of the cricket (though T20 is the only format they are interested in) and also for the reasons my fellow readers mentioned already such as, he has a permanent spot in the playing XI, most of his career, he had been playing for Delhi team and the senior members of the team were tested and discarded for that position.

Cheers......

I feel Rishabh Pant is young and needs experience .... but as they say .. Catch them young and watch them grow under the pressure and get molded to finally emerge as the best. .

Nurturing young players including Pant to lead India for future purpose -- that must be the main reason behind making young Pant to lead Delhi team now. To test his abilities while taking crucial decisions in crunch situations, they must've put this captaincy cap on his head.

Now he tasted the success and will try his best to improve his all round performance, as a batsman, wicket keeper, and most importantly as a Captain. Let us see.
