That's not what happened in Mahābhārata. It was Jarāsaṃdha who granted the city Mālinī to Karṇa (Śāntiparvan 5.6). Then, when Kṛpa questioned Karṇa's lineage, Duryodhana simply performed an abhiṣeka in recognition of the territory within Aṅga that Karṇa already ruled (Ādiparvan 126.35). Karṇa may not have ruled all of Aṅga; there was another warrior named Aṅga (Droṇaparvan 25.14-18).

Ohh Duryodhan had right to perform Abhishek?

Duryodhana only announced, eṣO'ṅga-viṣaye mayā rājye'bhiṣicyate - this one's anointed by me in kingship of the Aṅga territory.

In the next verse, Karṇa was anointed tasmin kṣaṇe - that instant, mantravidbhiḥ - by those (brāhmaṇas) who knew the mantras for the coronation.
