š before the appearance of Mahalakshmi during samudramanthan, devi Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth,beauty, prosperity was born as the daughter of Bhrigu and Khyati. she was destined to be vishnu's wife, as she is the maya of vishnu himself. she did strict meditations upon lord vishnu to obtain him as her eternal consort.
once, while she was meditating, devraj Indra came to her in the form of lord vishnu to test her devotional power. she at once recognised his to be indra,and not vishnu. Indradev then went to vishnu and informed him about the beauty and devotional powers of lakshmi, who is the Mother Goddess..vishnu went to her and married her and lived in the ksheersagar with her with bliss ,till rishi Durvasa cursed the universe to be devoid of Lakshmi...the more on her appearance as Mahalakshmi,in the next topic.š
