Chapter 2: The End(?) of Vrindavana pastimes

Akrura stopped the chariot a little away from Nanda's house. He looked at the ground. Yes, the mud was filled with hoofprints of cows, and two sets of footprints. He looked at the two sets of footprints, which bore all the auspicious signs that Gargacharya had described, so many years ago. They belonged to Krsna and Balarama themselves!

Akrura got off his chariot, and with joy he fell on the ground, rolling in the holy dust of Baladeva's and Krsna's feet! He kept chanting, "Krsna Krsna Krsna!" joyously as he rolled in the mud, and when he finally got up, he was covered with dust. The rays of the rising sun cast their orange light on him and highlighted his state. As he patted himself and turned back to his chariot, he saw before him the very objects of his worship: Balarama, with his hand around Krsna's shoulders, both boys looking at him with a mixture of curiosity and amusement. One very fair, the other extremely dark, yet both of them having the same divine aura around them. Akrura stood, stunned.

"Pranams, Mahodaya. This is my elder brother Balarama, son of Mata Rohini and Sauri Vasudeva. I am Krsna, son of Mata Yashoda and Nanda Maharaja."

Jolted into consciousness by Krsna's voice, he smiled and said, "Well met, Sauri Balarama and Krsna. I am Akrura, a Vrishni, and minister of King Kamsa."

Balarama spoke, "Welcome, Sri Akrura, to our humble dwelling. I think you can first freshen up in the cool waters of the Yamuna, and perform you rmorning rituals. We shall inform father about your arrival."

After Akrura had bathed himself and performed his Sandhyavandanam, he had been given a warm welcome by Nanda, complete with flowers and madhuparka, a sweet dish.

Akrura was overwhelmed by the hospitality they offered him and felt guilty that he was going to deliver them such anguishing news. But it was his duty to do so. With a heavy heart, he looked at Nandagopa and spoke.

"Maharaja Nanda, I am here to deliver an invitation from Maharaja Kamsa to the Dhanur Yagya that is to be held the forthcoming Chaturdashi, which is two days from now. On account of the Dhanur Yagya, he has invited all the kings and chieftains of the neighbouring provinces and kingdoms to participate. He has also, for entertainment, organized a Malla Yuddha, a wrestling tournament. And," he paused, his face streaked with anxiety. Nanda urged him to continue. Akrura wiped his sweat and resumed. "And he wishes that Krsna and Balarama take part in the Malla Yuddha."

Nanda rose in shock. "What are you saying, my friend? My sons wrestle with those wrestlers of Kamsa? For entertaining the kings?! Preposterous!"

"You- You m-must understand, Nanda Raya, that-"

"What must I understand, Akruraji? My sons here, barely fifteen years of age, combat with skilled wrestlers for the sake of amusing the crowds? Look at them! They are weak and thin! How are they supposed to fight with the mallas?"

"But father, Dau and I would enjoy participating in-"

"Be quiet Krsna! This is not any of your games! This is a professional tournament where there is a severe risk to your life itself! I shall not allow either of you to go! "

Akrura inhaled deeply, and exhaled. He looked at Nanda's face, full of shock and outrage. He then looked at Krsna and Balarama, their faces passive. With a voice full of distress, he said, "There is another crucial information. I think both Yashoda Devi and you should here it."

Nanda looked momentarily confused, then called out to Yashoda, who came, her hands covered with milk from milking the cows. Nanda told her about Kamsa's invitation, hearing which she passed Akrura a look of such incredulousness it bordered on fury.

With a slight fear, Akrura looked at Yashoda and then Nanda, and then broke out. "Krsna is not your son."

As he had expected, they screamed outrageously. But then Krsna stepped up and calmed his parents, gesturing Akrura to continue.

"Krsna," he continued in a strained way, "is the prophesied eighth son of Devaki and Vasudeva, destined to kill Kamsa. He was brought to Gokula on the night of his birth, where Vasudeva exchanged him with your daughter, who flew back to the skies once Kamsa found her."

It took a minute for them to digest this fact. Then, Yashoda spoke up, her voice faltering with shock. "If whatever you say is true, Akrura Mahodaya, that does not make Krsna any less my son. After all, for the past fourteen years it is I who has taken care of him day and night. I have fed him my milk. I have looked after him as my own son. Even if what you say is true, if Krsna is- is truly the son of Devaki and Vasudeva, even then they are only secondary. For I and Nanda are Krsna's first parents and will always protect our child from all harm. Therefore, you have no rights to take him away to whatever tournament you wish."

"Maa." Krsna put his hand on his mother's shoulder. "I shall always be your son. But that does not mean I don't agree with Uncle Akrura. If I am the prophecied child, destined to kill Kamsa, then shouldn't I go? Isn't it the only way to once and for all rid the world of that tyrant? And, when have prophecies gone wrong? Trust me, with your blessings and Mahadeva's wish, I shall remain safe from all danger."

"That is not the question, Krsna! The question is the injust way in which you are being forced to compete! If the prophecy has to come true, (it will no doubt!) it can wait for a few more years. Yours and Balarama's safety is our only concern. We shall deny the invitation."

"And cause the destruction of Vrindavana? Trust me Maa, this is the only way!"

"Do not worry, Yashoda Chithi, Kanha shall be safe! For when has he ever come to harm with Balarama at his side?!"

Even Yashoda had to smile at Balarama's enthusiasm. She wiped her tears and looked at Nanda pleadingly. "If it must be this way," he heaved, "then so be it."

Yashoda's hopes fell. "Let us tell your mother." She said, looking at Balarama.

***

As Radha waited under the Kadamba tree, she looked at the setting sun. Within a few hours, she would be seeing the last of Krsna for a hundred years. How she would survive those years, she didn't know. She looked at the Yamuna, considering jumping in it and ending her life before the suffering began. No her mind told her. You have to fulfil the terms of Sudama's curse. That is your only recourse. As she closed her eyes, tears trickled down her face.

I am coming to meet you. Said Krsna, conversing mentally. One last time.

Akroor has had his ups and downs, but after all, he is a devotee ! Their meeting !! Loved the love blooming between Kanha, oops, Raajkumaar Krishn and Akroorji !! But I think, you could have done better with Maiya's reaction. The lady who can beat up Krishna, will not take things lying down. So easy ? Those were my thoughts when I read the first part. But then, tears came to my eyes. She's more concerned about Kanha's safety at Mathura and hardly pays attention to the fact that Kanha is not her son ! Even Baabasa ! Love how he quietens them when they agree ! Father's heart ! But what about Raadha, nobody's going to sympathize with her when Kanha is gone. But whatever the case is, I understand Sudama's curse, Kanha's dilemma and everything, but Krishna at least had Dau with him, and I guess Rukmani understood him, but Raadha was alone, tai na ?

You know? i don't know why I did that. I somehow didn't want to bring in Yashoda Mata's grief here, because suddenly she realises that Krsna being Vasudeva's son, he is not going to return. Andthat's when the entirety of the situation falls on her.

Radha Devi... I don't know how she was able to wait for 100 years. That is beyond the capacity of human understanding...
AND right now I got something... Krsna will tell you.

Chapter 3: The Flute's Music

Radha waited on the banks of Yamuna. She watched the sun finally sink into the horizon and the Moon God take his position in the sky. She wondered about her other sakhis. How would they react on knowing the news? They would hear it eventually, in mere hours. I'll have to be there to guide them, I suppose. She was after all, their beloved friend, second only to Krsna. They would listen to anything she had to say. But what about Chandravali?

Chandravali, who always tried to surpass Radha in everything; Chandravali, who unlike Radha never ever lost her temper on Krsna; Chandravali, who only wanted to serve His lotus feet. Chandravali would never listen to her. Her happiness existed only in Krsna's happiness, how would she console her? And who would be there to console Radha?

"I will."

Radha spun around to see Krsna's cheerful face. "I will give you strength to console all the gopikas, Radhe!"

He smiled once more at her, melting her heart. But his watery eyes betrayed his emotions. In seconds, the smile had been replaced by a grimace and that too vanished in a trice - his eyes welling up with tears, Krsna cried, hugging his beloved.

Radha was speechless for a moment. Usually it was she who cried and sought consolation from Krsna. Never before had this reversal of roles happened before! She lifted Krsna, who had sunk to his knees, and wiped his tears. "If you, the Supreme Lord of the Cosmos yourself, give in to your emotions, then what will be the fate of us simple gopikas?!"

Krsna composed himself. "Do not worry Kanha..." Radha said soothingly, "just as in your previous avatara, you reassured Mata Kausalya that 14 years will be over sooner than you know it, I am reassuring you! A hundred years is nothing for you! It is just a few years longer than fourteen years! Why do you fall into despair?"

Krsna's face broke into a sad smile. "Look at me! I came here with the intention of consoling you and reassuring you about our reunion, and here you are the one telling me everything!" He smiled wider. "But you must promise me this. One the first day of the 101st year, you shall meet me in Siddhashrama. Will you?"

Radha smiled bravely, her eyes too slowly filling up. "Of course I will Kanha! You have my- my word." And with that, she too gave in to her emotions.

***

As they sat on the banks of the Yamuna, Krsna looked at his life. He took out his flute and played Kalyani, the ever pleasing raga. It reminded Radha of Kanha's words of praise in the Kuteera, so long ago! One of her most favourite ragas. The flute's music filled the atmosphere, causing an increase in the pleasant weather. The hours rolled by, but Kanha didn't stop playing his flute. Finally, a few hours before dawn, he stopped playing. He took his flute in his hand and gazed at it lovingly. Radha looked at him with her wide eyes. He met her glance and looked back at his flute. Then he extended the flute to Vrishabhanu's daughter.

"For you." He said, in an almost childish tone.

And without any questions, without any hesitation, she took the flute from his lotus hands and held it to her bosom.

RES, Will Edit After 4 Days.

--edit--

Radha is so nice ! Pehle friends phir herself ! And I always feel so sad for Kanha, everyone always blamed him for leaving Radha, not understanding what he must have gone through. The feeling must be horrible, when you have to spend your life with someone other than your loved one, who reminds you every second, that in some form or other you have betrayed your beloved. And Krishna had to go through it 16108 times. And the last raag of the flute. They both, being the highest, are also the most lonely people, with everyone seeking assurances from them, but none powerful enough to console them. I hope Rukmani will come soon. She will at least divert his mind for even a while from Radha, and his pain. 😭
