Playing for entertainment is different from playing for gambling

@Nandini

Had Krishna rolled the dice on behalf of Pandavas then I think it would neither have been for entertainment exactly nor for gambling. It would have been for dharma. And Krishna is beyond everything and yet he can do anything with his multidimensional unbounded personality. He can also be strategic, political, smart & shrewd like Shakuni but for dharma & for his devotees. I think even his gambling and rolling of dice also would have looked beautiful in that case had he actually done it just like his any other play/leela we enjoy. Madhuraadhipaterakhilam madhuram.

@Vrish

In the rules in post of Mina, in that link, the exact answer of your question is specifically written. The game is played by 4 players with 2 each on oppossite sides becoming partners of each other like the game of bridge. And as a variation of the game, if there are only 2 players, both will operate 2 opposite houses each and will run 2 coloured pieces on opposite sides. So each will get alternate turn but in one turn if I operate say red colour piece, then in my next turn I will move that colour piece which has its starting home on the oppossite corner of red.

I agree w/ Shivang re: what might have happened had Krishna rolled the dice for the Pandavas. It would have been a tit-for-tat to Shakuni, it would have undone the gains of the Kauravas, and even the punishment part of the vows of Bhima could have been retained as a part of the deal if the Pandavas won. Also, when Balarama played Rukmi, the goal on the end of Rukmi & his allies was to humiliate Balarama, but Krishna didn't prevent that game, and let it proceed to its logical end - Balarama slaying Rukmi and battering his allies.

If the game allowed 4 players, another thing Krishna could have done would have been to be the partner of the Pandavas and let the Kauravas play the remaining 2 colors. Then Krishna wouldn't have been throwing for the Pandavas, but would have been a fully legitimate player in his own right, and could have played both his own pieces, as well as that of the Pandavas.

Speaking of which, in all the games of dice I've read about, I've never read about >2 players. Does anyone know of such an instance where 2 or more people participated in such a contest?

Actually playing this game (which is very close to Ludo) gives a very good idea of skill (and also type of skill and timing of it) vs chance proportion in the game and level of control one can have over victory through practice and kind of frustration it can create if luck doesn't favour you.

In today's episode of DBSK, they showed both Krishna & Shakuni playing w/ dice, and it was fascinating to watch. It was like those remote chess matches, where 2 chess players in 2 different locations around the world are playing, and getting a note of each other's moves. Shakuni had dice in his hand, as did Krishna. Shakuni cast his dice hoping for a 2, but getting an 8 😆 while Krishna cast his - he was playing in the garden w/ Satyabhama, and got exactly the number he wanted. 😆 In the meantime, Shakuni was puzzled that he didn't get the number he wanted 😆 But the fascinating thing about DBSK is how the political manouvres b/w Krishna & Shakuni is being represented by dice 😎

Krishna & Satyabhama playing reminded me of the ACK 'Krishna & the False Vasudeva', where Krishna killed Paundrak. In it, Krishna is shown playing dice w/ Rukmini when the fire rakshashi (another agnisuri?) came and threatened Dwarka, and he cooly sent his Sudarshan chakra after it to chase it back to Kashi & destroy everything there, while he continued playing w/ Rukmini uninterrupted. 😆
