It was, and it was in fact Tulsidasji's main source for the variations and the devotional tone in general. IMO a credible source indeed; it was written by Ved Vyas himself. As for why RCM is more popular, it is because that was the first time the text was translated into the vernacular and made accessible to common people who weren't literate in Sanskrit.

Really? It was written by Veda Vyas himself?😲 I honestly never knew that! In that case, I wonder why there are differences between VR and AR since both were written by saints that received the darshan of God. I am in particular talking about Chhaya Sita vs real Sita...such a big difference shouldn't exist if two gifted saints with divya drishti wrote the same epic.😕

The disparities are certainly intriguing. In my opinion, they arise due to a difference in the intended audience, not in the divinity or authenticity of the author. Aadikavi Valmiki wanted to write the story in a way that would suit a secular audience, so that they would be able to imbibe the qualities of the characters without rolling their eyes every time a miracle is described. Ved Vyasji, having learned the lesson that Naradji taught him in the 1st Skand of the Bhagavat when he was depressed after writing MB, could no longer write without expressing the devotional truths of the story and be content.

That makes sense...other than the Agni Pariksha confusion, RCM/AR and Valmiki Ramayan don't have many differences...Adhyatma Ramayan just adds to VR and gives the characters more divinity if you know what I mean. I guess Valmiki humanized his characters a bit more than Veda Vyas so that less learned people could understand the tale and also learn from the characters...whereas Veda Vyas and Tulsidas interweaved more divine interventions into their story to teach us that nothing happens without God's grace...every single act of a human being is pre-planned by God only, so they had Saraswati Ma sitting on Manthara's tongue, Shri Hari appearing to Kaushalya Ma, etc.
It brings to mind the episode about Barbarik which my family and I saw from SK today...it was a really interesting story and shown beautifully too, definitely refreshing after all that war drama.👏 It showed that after the war, all the Pandavas became slightly proud of their strength and came under the impression that the Kauravas were defeated because of their power. Barbarik laughs at them and Draupadi asks him why he is laughing. He then tells her that seeing humans' pride sometimes makes him laugh because they fail to realize that nothing happens without God's grace. He then tells them that behind every death of the Kauravas, Krishna's Sudarshan Chakra was doing its job and not Arjun's arrows, Bheem's Gada, etc. The Pandavas were mere instruments to kill the Kauravas and Krishna actually did all the work. The Pandavas realize their mistake and apologize to Krishna for their momentary ahankaar.
This episode was seriously awesome😍, you should watch it...I don't think it's on youtube but it may be on dailymotion.
Btw, I have a question...someone told me that Lakshman Rekha was written in neither VR nor RCM...which source does it come from, since every single Ramayan movie and serial shows it? It's a pretty popular story and we never see Sita Haran without Lakshman Rekha, so I'm curious.

Agreed, though I'm not sure it can categorically be declared whether the later authors purposefully interweaved them, or Valmikiji purposely omitted them. For the former, there would be the reason you mentioned, and for the latter it would be because he had an audience who wasn't living during a bhakti revival period like Tulsidasji's was.

That does sound very devotional and nice. I saw the Barbarik story in BRC's MB sequel, Mahabharat Katha, and though it was interesting, his head on a stick was a tad gruesome for my squeamish taste 😳😆

It is not described as it occurs in RCM, as in during Aranya Kand before Sita Haran, but it is indeed mentioned in that text. Later on when Mandodari is trying to talk sense into Ravan, she makes a reference to it by telling him that "those who you refer to as lowly forest-dwellers - you couldn't even cross a line on of their arrows made in the sand, then what makes you think you can defeat them?" The fully developed narrative of it is from Ananda Ramayan, if I remember correctly.

Ok guys, here goes the first sig from my rather lengthy "SK Janmashtami series" 😆 I have been saving up sigs to share with y'all for like 2 months now and only just realized that a bunch of them are in perfect sequence of a traditional Krishna Janm Katha - from VD's wedding to the naming ceremony - so here I go. This one is from the wedding with which it all started. I had too much fun with it so I made 6 different colorings (actually more but I'll only subject you to these 😆), each one with diffeerent texts ranging from the song in the scene, to Bolly stuff, the actually Sanskrit shlokas recited during a saptapadi. Feel free to use and do let me know which coloring worked best!
