I was so disappointed by today's episode. I mean, Come On people! Wake up, this was the Independence Day episode. Today wasn't about singing in key, it was about getting the Indian Viewers to get up, enjoy, pay homage to their country, hoist their flags, wave 'em, dance, celebrate the fact that their country will be turning 60 in a matter of days. If there was any night where you'd want the public to sing along with you, it was tonight. There were no emotions, no tears of pride, no real patriotism emanating from anything whether you look at the set, the audience or the performers.
Anyway, Deepa's voice didn't suit the song at all. I think performance is like a buzzword she's vaguely familiar with so all she can muster when it comes to "performing" is awkwardly moving n raising her arms and moving front and back. So disappointed. C+
Amit ruined quite possibly the greatest Indian song of the 21st century. Professional divers have difficulty levels, but they don't give you 10 for effort, they score you for how good it was. Even if your difficulty level was sky high, if you don't execute, you lose and Amit didn't execute. I love this song, I despise this performance. C
Chang's enunciation is always singled out as a strength, when for me it really is a drawback. Chang sings as if he's reading, and there's a tradeoff between maintaining flow and maintaining clarity, and he always tries to get the clarity part in, and because of that it seems like he is singing indistinct verses from unrelated songs, and in some parts he just seems to be reading to music rather than singing. Ankita, my dear Ankita. That was terrible. I mentioned the professional divers ki example earlier and I just wanna highlight the professionalism aspect of it. There are no excuses when you are a pro. Now we understand that this competition is pretty hard for a 17 year old but you know the title you are aiming for is going to pit you against 20 year olds and 40 year olds alike and its a cutthroat world out there. Ghulti ki gunjayesh nahin hai. Now others have gotten away with their mistakes because their mistakes were less obvious but yours was obvious which is gonna make you look bad in the public eye. And Ankita, whenever you are performing, never have your back towards the audience especially when you are standing awkwardly behind judges and not really interacting with them. I am being harsher on Ankita because I really think she should win this competition and such a performance wouldn't cut it. I guess I understand where Anu was coming from with respect to Emon and Deepa. D+
Puja looked scared like someone was forcing her to sing a patriotic song. Her high notes were shrieky, her pitch was wavering to no end and last week's sensational performance seemed like a distant memory. This won't cut it at all. D+
Emon. Thank God for Emon, or maybe thank God for about 60 seconds in the middle of Emon's performance. He started off his usual steely, emotionless self and as usual I felt like I had imagined the strong personality dimension of Emon, but today he seemed to lose it. IN the middle, he finally seemed like he was singing from the heart, and giving a "No reservations" rendition. Then it seemed like he felt he had commited open debauchery and receded into his usual "Sing well, don't know what the song is about" self. B-
Prashant bhai is a genuinely nice person and it shines through. He got the pimp slot, he is a Sipoy and even he couldn't get his compatriots on their feet or display that affection, love, dedication to your nation and the honour that you derive from it that permits you to put your life on the line for it. Our Sipoy seemed sedated and a tad bored by the patriotic proceedings. Disappointed. C-
Overall Ranking:
- Emon
- Deepa
- Amit
- Prashant
- Ankita, Puja
- Chang
The only person I 'd like to see leaving is Chang. For me, if "Rut Aa Gaye Rae" was the peak then there really isn't much to look forward to. At least Puja and Prashant gave outstanding performances in the last Gala. As for the remaining 4: Amit, Emon, Ankita and Deepa, they are still on my Top 4 wishlist.
