'Let the struggle begin!'
Karunya, who doesn't want anything easy in life tells Deepali Dhingra
Alot of hearts were broken when he didn't win Indian Idol's season two. But Karunya didn't need any tag to prove his talent and mettle to his fans. The young singer, just 21 years old, has been busy touring all over the globe, has already sung for a Bollywood film, is hosting Little Champs (Telugu version) and now, is out with his debut album Karunya. Ask him what he feels is the USP of the album and he says, "The USP of the album is me, my voice. It's an effort to reach out to people. The reason the album is called Karunya is because I want people to feel they're taking me home."
Elaborating further on his album, Karunya says, "There are nine original tracks. It's a happy romantic album where all the songs are of different genres. People have seen me singing Jhanak jhanak payal baaje as well as One Love. I didn't want them to say that 'ab Karunya mein woh variety nahi rahi'." But for somebody who claims that playback singing in Bollywood is his dream and who actually got to sing Aaane Chaar Aaane in Lagey Raho Munnabhai even before he had an album, why bring out a private album now? "Bollywood will happen but for me, it's just important to keep singing. Also, playback singing is according to a preset situation. This is about being a rockstar and I want to do both," he says and adds with a laugh, "It shouldn't happen that while singing for other heroes, I don't get to sing for myself. The only way I can have a heroine is in a music video!"
For somebody who started singing at the age of five, does he think everything's happening too soon? "No, it hasn't happened too soon," he says thoughtfully and adds, "People ask me why I haven't done any more Bollywood songs after Lagey Raho... but I think nothing happens too fast. I'm just 21 and I don't want to saturate my career by the time I'm 25! Let the struggle happen. I don't want people to say I've had it easy." And although Karunya doesn't reveal his Bollywood plans further, he does admit that he will be singing for some really good music composers in near future. "Even at the age of five, I had the fire in my belly. I knew I'd become famous one day," he smiles. Well, sheer talent is all that counts and looking at Karunya's passion for singing, one can be sure he won't disappoint!
