Sonu Nigam collaborates with DJ Skribble

There's lot that seems to be happening at the front of Sonu Nigam. He has gone to America and has tied up with DJ Skribble there along with DJs Sans and Rob Bass. DJ Skribble has been associated with high profile artists like The Fugees and Missy Elliot. They are planning to come out with a music album shortly.

Sonu further gives an update detail as to how the collaboration took place. 'After my tour in the US, I'm beginning to generate interest in the music fraternity here. I am not doing much. My lawyer Nick got it organised. Bollywood is the 'in' thing there these days. Let them do what they intend to do; I'll match my music with theirs. Once released in America, the song is bound to reach India with or without piracy.'

When asked what else is happening at his front, he optimistically mentions the Germany shows. 'It's my solo concert in Germany. There could be some German songs, may be from me! Back home I'll make the nation dance to something new in a big way in September. It's going to be a new sound, a new feel, and a new spirit.'

What is your latest album Phir Bewafai all about?
Phir Bewafai is actually a sequel to my earlier best selling albums Uski Yaadonmein and Bewafai.

Why did you launch Sonu Nigam's father Agam Nigam as a singer two years ago?
My track record with T Series has been exemplary till date. Hence, when Bhushan Kumar of T Series told me that I should come up with the album Bewafaai two years ago since he wanted to launch Sonu's father Agam as a singer.

Was Agam roped in as a singer just because he happens to be the father of Sonu Nigam?
No. Bhushanji selected Agamji solely on merit. Agam has a great voice and sounds similar to Sonu. Agam is Sonu's guru. Agam is a little raw but I told Bhushan that we could work wonders with him because something about his voice touched me instantly.

How is Agam as a singer when compared with today's hotshot singers?
If Agam has to compete with today's young singers, you have to give him the scale of today's singers and the pitch of the youth today.

What was the response to Bewafai in market?
In one word, mind-boggling! Agam's Bewafaai sold 12 lakhs while UskiYaad Mein sold six lakhs. In comparison, Adnan Samy's Tera Chehra also did not work. Even Sonu's Chanda Ki Doli Mein stood nowhere near Agam's Bewafai.

How different are Agam and his son Sonu Nigam?
I am not diplomatic but Agam has a very good tone. Sonu has a lighter
voice and a thinner tone but is adaptable to different styles of singing because of
his age. Both are great in their own respects. Agam may not be able to adapt to modern singing but then he is no less a singer than Sonu. If only Agam had his break say 20 years ago, he would have definitely surpassed Sonu Nigam. Agam is Sonu's guru and has proved himself. Agam's album ran on its own merit. Being the father of Sonu did not at all make any difference to the sales of his album. In fact, there has been a demand for additional five lakhs cassettes from dealers even before the release of the album.

What is the USP of Phir Bewafai?
The USP of my album is that its songs will definitely touch your heart. Agam has sung ragas like Bhairvi, Des, Shivranjani etc, in a commercial style with melody as the focus with 80 musicians and 40 violins and a lot of acoustic instruments.

Why did you and Vinay split as composers?
Today people want to branch to other venues. Vinay could not give enough time to music because he wanted to take up filmmaking. He has produced a film called Strangers with Anand Raio as the director. In fact, Vinay had taken the first step. I felt that he was no longer passionate about music because he wanted to branch out eventually into direction. It was an amicable decision amongst us to split and continue to be friends. I am happy because today I am able to take my own decisions.

What is your equation with Bhushan Kumar of T Series?
I had a good equation with Gulshan Kumar too and had done more than 50 projects with him.Bhushan respects me for my work. If he likes what I offer, he records it. Till date T series has not lost out on any album that they have done with me. What is business? You do work with people whom you like and can make profit from. We share a good respect for each other. It is a moral commitment that I have with Bhushan to compose similar kind of melodious songs only for his company. Ajay Kapoor of T Series also has always stood by me.

Why did Bhushan's wife Divya set out to direct the music video for Phir Bewafaai?
It was Bhushan's decision to ask Divya to direct the music video. Ajay Jain has shot one music video while Divya has shot the second one. It is not the first time that Divya has directed .Earlier I had composed music for an ad film on anti piracy which was directed by Divya.. I had composed a jingle for the short film, which had duration of 30 seconds and starred Maaninee De.
