Mandi's famous Shivratri festival begins today
Mandi (Himachal Pradesh), Feb 17. (PTI): Wrestling competitions, basketball and volleyball tournaments and a variety of cultural programmes including performances by Bollywood playback singers, besides the traditional parade of gods will mark the week-long Shivratri festival that begins here today.
Meanwhile, a large number of devotees offered prayers in the famous Madhorao and Baba Bhootnath temples here on Shivratri.
The 'Festival of Lords' in Mandi, also known as Chota (mini) Kashi, will see singers Abhijit, Udit Narayan and Mika belt out popular numbers while Anuj Sharma, who participated in the television shows Indian Idol, are expected to regale the audience.
Lok Sabha MP from here Pratibha Singh, who is Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh's wife, will inaugurate the festival in which about 215 lords from different parts of the district will participate, said Deputy Commissioner and chairman of the festival committee Subhashis Panda.
Folk songs and dances, wrestling competitions, basketball and volleyball tournaments and exhibitions are other highlights of the festival, Panda said, adding special security arrangements were made for the occasion.
Earlier, Panda led the devotees in pujas at Madhavrao Temple on Friday and then a procession of lords was taken to the Bhootnath Temple.
Shivratri was also celebrated in other parts of Himachal Pradesh.
