Rahul Saxena may have been voted out of the top 11 Indian Idol contestants, but the 22 year old is still very busy! After chasing him for two days, Rahul finally relented and gave Patcy N an appointment. Arguably, Indian Idol currently is India's most popular reality show. Many viewers believed Rahul was one of the more talented singers on the show, and unfairly voted out by the millions who vote for the ones who stay on the programme. With less than two days to go for the results of the Indian Idol final between Abhijeet Sawant and Amit Sana to be declared, rediff.com spoke to Rahul, who has been signed on by Indian Idol judge Farah Khan, to sing in her new film, Happy New Year, starring Shah Rukh Khan. Tell us about yourself. I have completed my graduation from Delhi's Shyamlal College of Arts and Commerce. I shifted to Mumbai in June 2004.
My father is a government employee -- he works in the telephone exchange. My mother is a housewife. What made you participate in Indian Idol? I saw the ads on television. My friends were taking part and asked me if I would join too. I was not sure because I thought Indian Idol was not a show for singers. They wanted a good performer, dancer and singer. I can perform as a singer, but not as an actor. So I told my friends I would accompany them for the auditions but would not sing. But when I went, I thought I'd give it a try. I got selected.

What was the selection process like? The judges selected good voices at the first audition. That is how they selected 129 participants from 40,000 all over India. We were put up at Mumbai's Tulip Star Hotel for seven days. We couldn't leave as our schedule was very tight. We had to wake up at 5 am and reach the venue by 7 am. We had a three-day schedule, where we had to perform either solo or duet. At the end of that, 30 qualified. The selections continued and I was among the top 11 contestants. I was dropped on January 7. Since when did you want to sing? I started singing in school. My father sings very well, and I inherited the talent from him. He motivated me and told me to take it up seriously.
Music cannot be a hobby. It is God's gift and we should cherish it. The participants are God's blessed children, so we must make good use out of it. That's why I selected singing as a career. Now, I will sing professionally.

I sang for Star's SA Re Ga Ma Pa earlier. I have done the Sangeet Prabhakar course, which is a six-year course and is equivalent to a BA in music.

What was the Indian Idol experience like? Very pleasant! The format itself is so impressive, which included waking up in the morning and working hard. I also met talented people. When I was eliminated, I missed the routine. I didn't want to get up late and be lazy! The judges (Anu Malik, Farah Khan and Sonu Nigam) were very nice. I learnt a lot of technical stuff from them like how to face the camera etc. We became pals. How did you feel when you were dropped? I did not expect to be dropped as I had sung well. I don't know why I was dropped. But I don't want to know. All I know is I was eliminated and I hadn't expected it. It was a shock. What do you think was the reason?
I don't think I got lesser votes. Because after I got eliminated, people showed their sympathy. They made me feel they were sad for me.

So if they are sad, they must have voted for me! Maybe there was a technical problem.

Don't Miss!

How has your life changed after Indian Idol? I just have to say I am from Indian Idol and people recognise me. Indian Idol gave me a platform. The public knows my family and me. Whenever we go shopping, people recognise us. Everybody knows us now. My life has changed a lot. I have an identity now. And confidence. I have learnt a lot from Indian Idol. Has the limelight changed you? Not at all. I am the same person but my professional life has changed. I have learnt how to speak to people and how seriously I should take my work. What are your plans on March 5? We will be shooting the final episode. It will be a deferred live show, as it will be telecast a few hours after the shoot.
Voting will be open till 5 am on March 5, and maybe by 10 am, we will start shooting.

For the final day, the top 11 contestants will be present. It will be a two-hour episode.

Don't Miss!

What was your interaction with the judges like? The judges were very good. I didn't get any bad comments from them. Sonuji and Anuji told me I should have been in the top three. They made me very confident. Farahji recognised my talent from the early rounds onwards. When I got eliminated, she asked me to sing in her film, Happy New Year. I don't know why she selected me. Maybe she felt my voice was very good. Or maybe she thought I should not go back empty-handed. It was a gift to me. She announced it on stage.
I don't know how many songs I am singing, or who the other singers are, or on which actor my voice will be picturised on. All I know is that Anu Malik is the music director.

But I can't sing right now as I am under Sony's contract. I can sing only after three months.
