TALK
Melody Maker

Anuradha Mane

Pune, May 7: His enchantingly soft voice is a faithful reflection of the mellow songs that he creates. And now that the long-time musical duo of Jatin-Lalit has split, composer Lalit Pandit is all set to go solo. Speaking at the Ceramic Master's Showroom at Ghole Road, the composer plans to visit some old friends and take a break during his short holiday in the city. Exuding a great amount of contentment while talking about his forthcoming film Fanaa, with Aamir Khan and Kajol playing the lead, he says, " This is the fourth time we have worked with Yash Raj films and since the movie is set in Kashmir, it involved a lot of research. We had to listen to many songs to get a hang of authentic Kashmiri music. I personally feel that the songs, chaand sifarish and dekho na have turned out exceptionally well." The film has seven tracks including five songs, one instrumental composition and one remix of the title song by DJ Aqeel.

The highlight of the soundtrack is the song to which Aamir Khan and Kajol have also lent their voices. Recounting the experience, he says, "This is the second time after the song Aati Kya Khandala that Aamir has sung for us. Though this is the first time that Kajol lent her voice to any of our songs, she was as professional as ever." Incidentally, the composer is also working on a Marathi film Joker, directed by Vikram Tuli. This is the first time that he will be composing for a Marathi film. "There has been a lot of Marathi influence in my life ever since childhood so I am looking forward to the experience," he says. Apparently, the list of his diverse work does not end with creating Marathi songs, he also has a Bengali project in hand and another International project which will be released exclusively in the United States.

And now that the Jatin-Lalit duo have decided to go their separate ways, after 20 years of churning out the biggest hits in Bollywood, he is already clear about what the future holds. "Our partnership was excellent while it lasted and now that I am on my own, I have to start from scratch. It will involve a tremendous effort but nevertheless, I am truly looking forward to enjoying my creative freedom," he says on a concluding note.

Fanaa (film)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fanaa
(Sufi: ???? ), is currently an in-production Bollywood movie, starring Aamir Khan and Kajol in pivotal roles. It will be directed by Kunal Kohli who previously directed Hum Tum, and produced under Yash Raj Films. The film also stars Shiney Ahuja, Rishi Kapoor and Kiron Kher in supporting roles and Tabu and Lara Dutta in special appearances. The script of the movie has been kept secret by the director, other than merely mentioning that the movie will be different from Hum Tum in that it will be a 'mature' love story and every character will have shades of grey.

The film is highly anticipated as it marks the end of Kajol's four year sabbatical from the film industry. It also features her first time pairing with Aamir Khan. The two worked together in Ishq, but were not paired opposite each other. According to sources, Aamir Khan will don the role of a terrorist whilst Kajol will play a Kashmiri girl, though this is not confirmed. Rishi Kapoor plays the role of Kajol's father.

Trivia

  • Director Kunal Kohli sent Aamir Khan and Kajol a draft of the script, hoping they would agree with each other. His plan backfired - each of them sent back their revised versions of the script, with their own little adjustments, which included more depth and flesh to their own characters and less to the others.
  • Aamir Khan has sported a new youngish look for this movie, quite a contrast to his moustache-twirling antics in The Rising. Kajol, apparently, has also lost a significant amount of weight.
  • The title Fanaa means annihilation in Sufism, a mystic tradition of Islam. It also means destruction or destroyed in love in Urdu|Hindi. In Urdu/Hindi, it can convey the meaning of totally lost in love, or completely encapsulated by love.

MUSIC REVIEWS
Fanaa
Rajiv Vijayakar

Yash Raj Music, Rs 149
A pleasant but low-key album from Jatin-Lalit and Prasoon Joshi. 'Chand sifarish...' (Shaan-Kailash Kher) is the best track in which Shaan outclasses all his past work. Mahalaxmi Iyer's 'Des rangila...' is another standout lyric but its refrain revisits the title-track of Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. 'Chanda chamke...' is a rework of the tune of 'Yaara yaara...' which was unused (in the film) from the Hum Tum album. The two Sonu-Sunidhi tracks are hummable.
