versatile Package
S.D. Sharma Sonu Nigam "Unlike those good old days when the Bollywood singers conscientiously relied only on playback singing in films for their survival and stardom, the intensely growing competition demands a contemporary singer to be a 'complete package of versatile myriad traits' attuned to be a charismatic stage performer, accomplished dancer and anchor besides a compatible vocalist with ability to sing genres of music right from the thumri to pop," says Bollywood's star singer Sonu Nigam. This trend, according to him, when viewed in the right perspective encourages one to explore more opportunities to make use of his talent. Sonu Nigam was in the city to perform at the Festival of Gardens. Sharing his views on diverse subjects with the Lifestyle, the singing sensation maintains that he is not averse to the concept of Indian Idol, referring to his experience as a judge for a Sony TV show. The show does not guarantee the crowned 'Idol' being the best but assures the one, to be an artist of people's choice. At the same time the film industry too cannot be taken for granted for the fair promotion of an actor or a singer bereft of the blessings of a godfather. I do not see anything wrong if a talent promotional show helps budding artists to grow. Sonu agreed that the film music, the nucleus of Bollywood industry, is loosing its creativity potential and the rampant piracy looming large might prove disastrous in future. At the age of three, Faridabad-born Sonu was initiated into music by his father Agham Kumar. Sonu later acted as a child prodigy in feature films like Kamchor, Ham se hai Zamana, Taqdeer, Ustadi Ustad se and Betab. After a few albums and anchoring of TVS Sa Re Ga.. .. show Sonu Nigam emerged on the Bollywood scene stealing the limelight with hit film song Achha sila diya.. for Bewafa Sanam followed by Sathiya, Pukar, Kal Ho Na Ho, Refugee and Border to name a few. Positive attitude to learn, hard work, time management and self-introspection are mantra for success. Besides daily riyaz of vocal classical his passions include Yoga, Tai Kwondo, studying books (over 1000 in his personal library) and learning classical music under Ustad Mustafa Khan even as an established singer. Giving a partial credit to Sa Re Ga Ma which fetched him instant popularity but it was his aesthetic potential which shaped his career. He is obliged to Usha Khanna, Sachin for support and guidance. On the galaxy of music awards Sonu, remarking in lighter vein, said these are generally decided by those knowing little of the finer nuances of music. Sonu denies any hankering for the awards though he had a plenty, including the coveted film fare award-2002.

He is working on latest album based on semi classical music and the Sufina theme under the music direction of Deepak Pandit.

Sonu Niigaam: profile

Super star singer Sonu Niigaam

Sonu Niigaam can never be called hesitant or retiring. He always knew he was 'gifted' and he claims his biggest gift is his 'shamelessness' - something that has made him explore every possibility open to him.

A Leo, Sonu was born in Faridabad, but spent his early years in New Delhi. His father is the well-known singer and performer Agam Kumar.

Sonu revealed his musical inclinations very early in life. At the age of three he gave his first
public performance-he sang Mohd Rafi's song Kya hua tera waada from Hum Kisise Kum Nahin, while accompanying his father for a show.

Soon he began competing in music competitions. But after he bagged almost all the prizes to be won in the junior category, organisers soon began discouraging him from competing in his category or the senior category. Instead, they began
inviting him as the chief guest!

In the meantime, Sonu also tried his hand at movies. He acted in several films like Kaamchor, Ustadi Ustad Se, Betaab, Humse Hai Zamana, Taqdeer, Krishna Krishna, and Sachi Ibadat. He later tried to rekindle his film career with films like Jaani Dushman, Kash Aap Humare Hote, and Love In Nepal.

He came to Mumbai when he was 18 to try and break into the music industry. After a few false starts, he got a breakthrough with the song Achcha sila diya tune mere pyar ka for the film Bewafa Sanam.

The song became a rage and offers started to pour in. Sonu went from singing as many as 30 songs
a day to earn a living (zipping from studio to studio on his scooter) to singing a song a day. And hey, today he owns four cars.

He made a foray into the Indipop scene with hit albums like Sapnon Ki Baat, Deewana, Kismet and Mausam.

In the midst of all this, his singing caught the eye of the producers of TVS Sa Re Ga Ma on Zee TV, and they offered him the opportunity to host the show. Sonu hosted more than 200 episodes over five years. The show brought him in close touch with some of India's top exponents of music and also exposed him to a national audience.

He also hosted Kis Mein Kitna Hai Dum on Star Plus.

Today, he is juggling even more roles. After charming audiences as the judge on Indian Idol, he plans to don a new role.

That of a radio jockey on Radio City. Why? Because 'I would like to explore... and see if I have it in me to become an RJ. I have always believed that versatility is one of my greatest
strengths and I want to explore different mediums'.

The man who has been talked about for a lot of things - his singing, his hairstyles and his acting - now plans to do the talking!

It would be awesome to both sing and act'-NIKITA NIGAM
RAUL DIAS

Who are your f avo u r i t e singers?
Stevie Wonder, George Benson and The Carpenters. But topping the list of my all-time favourites is my bhaiyya — Sonu Nigam. I even have one of his songs as my caller tune.
Do you also plan to sing for Bollywood movies like your brother?
I was never a very ambitious person. In fact, I'm still not. But whenever I remember how hard my brother has worked to reach where he is, I get inspired to do my best, so that I can achieve even a fraction of that.
Was this decision taken recently?
No. Music is part of our family heritage. My father Agamkumar Nigam was a recognised singer in his own right. And I always knew that somewhere down the line, my future lay in playback singing. Not to say that I don't enjoy doing stage shows. I have been accompanying Sonu for his shows and singing with him for the last five years. But the thrill of a live audience is something else. However, playback singing is what I truly love.
Do you plan to act in films too?
My first Hindi film has just released, and I hope that the listeners like and appreciate me. I have also received a couple of acting offers, but I am still thinking about them. There is no doubt that I would love to act but I am waiting for the right offer to come my way. It would be awesome to act and sing like a few yesteryear heroines did in the past.
