Profile of Sonu Nigam

Sonu Nigam was born on July 30 in Faridabad and his first trainer was his father Agam Kumar Nigam. The family moved from the satellite town to the main city in New Delhi, where Sonu spent a large part of his childhood. In Delhi, his Ustad was Mohammad Tahir, but he was unable to continue this training for long as he left Delhi soon after. Some training here and there was enough for people to recognize him, but it was his personal effort and hard work that got him to where he is at present.

The first time he got on stage was when he was three years old. He accompanied his father in singing the hindi song Kya Hua Tera Vaada, which was originally sung by the legendary Mohammed Rafi. Sonu admits that Rafi has had a great influence on his own style of singing and that his first song on stage was an original of his idol, may not be entirely co-incidental. Sonu's father never got involved in music professionally, though he did provide all his support for the same cause to his son.

Sonu moved to Mumbai when he was 18 years old and from there he started a distance learning graduate programme. There were some restrictions as to what he could do in Mumbai. In Delhi, Sonu used to sing in parties and ceremonies with his father, but he was advised against this when he got to Mumbai. Sonu started accepting some roles in movies to support himself. He wasn't totally unexperienced in this field too as he has acted in films like Kaamchor, Ustadi Ustad Se, Hum Se Hai Zamana, Taqdeer and Betaab as a child.

The first film that Sonu recorded for was Aaja Meri jaan. He recorded five tracks, but only one was taken in. However, that was the spark and Gulshan Kumar noticed the hidden talent. Sonu tied up with T-Series. The number that got him really famous was Achha Sila Diya Tune Mere Pyaar Ka, which featured in the film Bewafa Sanam.

After suitably establishing himself, song offers were no more a problem and Sonu also ventured out to do independent pop music. He did the pop albums Sapnon Ki Baat and Deewana with T-Series, but moved on to Magnasound to produce Kismat and Mausam. Sonu got back with T-Series to follow up his prevous work with Yaad. He is now as actively involved with his independent pop music as with his mainstream film music and has also got himself on the small screen by hosting the show TVS Sa Re Ga Ma.

Interview with Sonu Nigam
"I am 'shameless' enough to explore every possibility open"
Posted on 20 October 2003

For millions of TV viewers in India, Sonu Nigam is a familiar figure, thanks to the success of Sa Re Ga Ma and Kismey Kitna Hai Dam.

This Faridabad-born singer owes his success to his father Agam Kumar, whose enthusiasm for music was passed on to Nigam. Trained under Kumar, Nigam gave his first stage performance at an early age of three. He sang the Mohammed Rafi number Kya Hua Tera Vaada (from the film Hum Kisise Kum Nahin) along with his father. He made his way to Mumbai, the city of dreams , when he was barely 18.

Nigam's first song was recorded for film Aaja Meri Jaa. Soon, the late T-Series head Gulshan Kumar signed Nigam for his music company and he started churning out hits like Achha sila diya tune mere pyaar ka... (film Bewafa Sanam).

Today, this chocolate faced-singer-turned-anchor-turned-actor awaits his first significant film Love in Nepal, slated for an October release. He's acquired a new brawny hip look for the film.

Nigam made some candid confessions to Vickey Lalwani in an interview. Excerpts:

How did 'Love in Nepal' happen?
About a year ago, director Rajat Mukerjee came to me and said he had a script which only I could do justice to. Naturally, I agreed. Within a few days, the remaining cast was decided. Love in Nepal started rolling.

This is your third film. Your earlier movies 'Jaani Dushman' and 'Kaash Aap Hamare Hote' flopped. Worried?
When a movie goes wrong, a lot of factors are responsible for its failure. Unfortunately, in India people don't understand this. The hero and heroine are made the scapegoats.

I wouldn't like to go into details as to why the movies failed. Of course, I know the reasons but people's emotions are involved. I wouldn't like to hurt anyone. Anyway, who hasn't tasted failure? I am not worried.

Being a singer, how satisfied are you with the songs of the film?
The cassettes are selling well enough. However, I would have preferred to be there while the songs were being made. Had that been the case, I am sure the end product would have been better. That's how I - and even Nikhil and Vinay, the music directors of the film - feel.

That's just one regret I have with this movie. Nikhil and Vinay are super music directors - their talent could have been tapped better.

Sonu Nigam and co-star Fllora Saini in a still from 'Love in Nepal'
"I want to act in every existing genre - like romance, action and comedy. My gut feeling is that I will succeed in all"

Why did you move to acting?
Everybody I know - directors, friends and even journalists - used to urge me to try my hand at films. "You'll do well"- I was repeatedly told. Slowly, their opinions started to sink in.

I never took any acting classes. My advantage is that I am a known face and people identify my through television.

Did television anchoring help you in acting?
Anchoring on television made me choreographer- and camera-friendly. Of course, as a child I have acted in films. But when you grow up and face the camera, you need to loosen up a bit. So yes, anchoring was helpful.

Any particular reason for the new look?
Well, I have always kept changing my looks at regular intervals. It's just that people are noticing me more now. When I first came to Mumbai, I had shoulder-length hair. After some days in the city, I sported a crew cut. Then I had longish hair and a thick, coarse beard in Sa Re Ga Ma.

I love to keep changing my look. I don't do it for anyone else - a new makeover just makes me feel good. And hey, girls love the current look! (laughs).

How are you planning your career, here on?
There's so much happening. Television offers, film offers, singing offers... I live the life of an actor, singer, dancer, anchor - all at one time.

But in the long run, I am looking to make my forte in every genre of acting - romance, action, comedy. I have a gut feeling that I will be successful in all the genres.

"Versatility is my strongest point. All my songs are radically different from each other. But I am at ease singing all of them"

How do you shuttle between careers as varied as music, films and anchoring?
Why not? I am a gifted child. My biggest gift is my 'shamelessness', which others don't have.

People are very restricted in what they want to do, they don't try out much in life. I am 'shameless' enough to explore every possibility open. I hated dancing, but still learnt it.

I am sure that many people are jealous of me. They can't stand my multidimensional capabilities. They want to pull me down - which is typically Indian. Some 'great men' (who are conferred with awards almost every year), have even tried to misguide me in the past.

Are you interested in acting in TV serials?
No. I wouldn't do TV serials. There is not enough money in that. But I am open to anchoring new shows on television, subject to its format and the terms and conditions.

Television brought recognition to your singing talent...
(interrupts) I beg to differ. I was a singer first. I bagged Sa Re Ga Ma because I was a singer. I can't lay the credit for the recognition of my singing talent on Sa Re Ga Ma. I got singing assignments for films because of my pop albums.

Let me put it differently. Television gave you the platform to come into limelight. Agree?
Yes, agree. That's precisely why I didn't listen to those who discouraged me from doing this medium. I trust my own judgment. I knew the impact of television. I knew the reach of television. Almost 70 per cent of my success today is due to television.
You have worked on Star Plus as well as Zee. What is the difference between these channels?
(smiles). My experience with both channels was great. Both have their pros and cons, but it would be unfair to compare.
As a singer, what is your strongest point?
Versatility. All my songs - be it What is your mobile number?.., Zindagi maut na ban jaaye sambhaalo yaaro..., Bijuriya... or Ye phoolo ki dukaan per gori ka makaan... - are radically different from each other. But I am at ease singing all of them.

In your early days, did you have to approach people for work or did they come to you?
For the first five years, I was a beggar. Everybody begs in their initial days. No newcomer can walk into an office and say, "Sir, I am very good at my job. If you want me, you can hire me."

However, at present, I'm working very hard. Singing, dancing, body building, acting - all this requires regular inputs. I want to grow further in the industry.

Radio City launches 'Life ki Dhun with Sonu Nigam'
Tuesday - Apr 04, 2006
Televisionpoint.com Correspondent
From singing, to acting, to TV anchoring and now to being an RJ. Sonu Nigam is all set to adorn a new avatar of an RJ. Starting April 7, Sonu Nigam makes his radio debut as the host of an exciting new show on Radio City 91 FM, Mumbai ' 'Life ki Dhun with Sonu Nigam' ' a terrific mix of all kinds of music, story telling, reliving nostalgic moments, mischief, repartee and unraveling of secrets with a tardka of Sonu Nigam's electrifying spontaneity and humour.

As Sonu Nigam puts it, "I have always believed that versatility is my greatest strength. I like to explore different mediums & different kinds of performances and entertainment. This is my first on radio and I am grateful to Radio City to give me my own show on the radio station. The entire flavour of the show is fun and interactivity in a musical way, bringing the best of our music industry for music lovers in Mumbai. This will not only bring me closer to my fans but will also give me an opportunity to be a part of their daily lives."

Airing every Friday at 8:00 p.m., 'Life ki Dhun with Sonu Nigam' promises to be a double scoop of entertainment for the listeners. The first hour of this new show will feature Sonu at his best as a Radio Jockey. During this hour, listeners can learn from Sonu about a wide array of subjects like how he overcame his stutter, career guidance for aspiring singers, punctuality, etc, in "Sonu Sir ki Paathshaala".

Listeners can also interact with Sonu one-on-one and request for their favourites in the "Sonu ji suno na" section and be part of his memories as he gets nostalgic in "Sonu ki suhani yaad". "Aaj ab abhi" showcases his mood at the moment, while "Kaash" speaks of his unfulfilled desires. For instance, Sonu Nigam talks about how he missed out on the opportunity to work with the great R D Burman on the super hit song "Ek ladki ko dekha toh'" from 1942 ' A Love Story. All this and more that will make you wonder why he didn't opt to be a professional RJ much earlier in his career.

In the second hour, Sonu will step up gear by inviting a contemporary musical maestro or a veteran musician of yesteryears as a special guest on the hot seat, every week. The highlight of this segment, will be a stimulating t'te-'-t'te between the flamboyant singer and his high-profile guest, the likes of Anu Malik, Sunidhi Chouhan, Kunal Ganjawala, and Sandeep Chowta to name a few. The listeners will be witness to a stimulating conversation full of unadulterated fun, whacky and hilarious repartee between the guest & host as they spill the beans about their professional & personal triumphs.

According to Apurva Purohit, CEO, Radio City, "At Radio City we have always believed that great music, innovation and creativity in our shows is what sets us apart. We always create content with a discerning focus on Music. 'Life ki Dhun with Sonu Nigam' is yet another unique initiative in the station's basket that reiterates our brand promise and urges our listeners to indulge in good music."

Apart from on-air presence, the show will go beyond radio sets and indulge its listeners with exciting on-ground initiatives like meet and greet events with Sonu Nigam, contests, distributing celebrity merchandise, initiating a Sonu Nigam fan club, SMS downloads and much more.

The first episode of 'Life ki Dhun with Sonu Nigam' features Sonu Nigam in conversation with Anu Malik. The deadly combination of Sonu & Anu has given us a number of hits like Border, Refugee and Main Hoon Na. Anu Malik reminisces his first recording with the legendary Mohammad Rafi. He takes a dig at Sonu Nigam for imitating Radio City's RJ Anirudh, and also takes up Sonu Nigam's challenge of singing a song completely without yoddling. The engaging conversation between the two stars will leave listeners gasping for more.

Sonu's soul-stirring show

user posted image

ON A GRAND MUSICAL JOURNEY Singing sensation Sonu Nigam performing at the concert. The crowd enjoying every moment of the show (below)

He kept the audience captivated with his rocking performance as he breathed new life into songs that you have heard a million times before. The venue was packed as thousands of fans gathered at the Andhra University Engineering College grounds to listen to the high-energy singer. Sonu Nigam, who was in the city for the first time for a concert organised by Idea Cellular Ltd., held the audience spell-bound with his magical voice giving new twists and turns to familiar songs.

The tickets got sold out a day before the event and the seats got filled an hour before the show. At 7.30 p.m., a dashing Sonu came on stage with his soul-stirring 'Kal Ho Na Ho...' as his brilliant band added the grand musical effect giving the melody, a slow emotional touch.

And there was the singing sensation at his best. "Thank you everyone for the wonderful welcome," he greeted the crowd as they screamed and waved at him and then added, "this evening will be the most memorable one for you all!"

It started off with the romantic numbers like 'Suraj Hua Madham...'adding a nostalgic effect to the mood of the evening. Then came the first gear shift of the evening. 'Rafta rafta...' he went and the crowd sprang to its feet. They hummed with the rocking Rehman track of 'Saathiya...' and to the melodious 'Chanda Ki Doli Mein...' that followed.

As he sang, Sonu went back to the memories of his struggling days. "After my first hit song 'Achha Sila Diya...', I used to get to sing only sad songs in films with tragic scenes. People thought that I was a depressed old man," he chuckled.

Indeed, for this talented singer, it was a tough and patient climb to the top of the charts. With stars in his eyes, he moved from Delhi to the city of dreams, Bombay, where he was to be hailed as the voice of the immortal Rafi Saheb. "I worship Mohd. Rafi. But with the changing times, I had to bring some improvisation in my voice," he said.

As he moved on with the musical evening, he involved the audience into dialogues, taking them with him in every moment of the trip.

Sometimes he just paused in between the song, prompting the audience to complete the song, always making sure that the audience remained captivated with his tasteful improvisations.
