It is nice to see the members promoting their favorites by creating fan clubs and polls to see to it that their favorite wins the contest. Fine! Nobody's against this practice but have we all given a thought that too much of promotion can back-fire our favorites' chances of winning? You may not agree with me now but it is true and you will realize it later. It has worked earlier too…remember the India-shining endorsement for instance which even the very charismatic and popular leader like Vajpayee (all due respects) couldn't save! I'm not comparing a high profile India Shining endorsement with Indian Idol 2 but I'm sure and also worried that if members adopt the same strategy it might work against their favorites' chances of winning the contest. Be it the India-shining campaign or any other movie (will not take names deliberately); excessive promotion has always failed to fetch the desired result.
The logic here is that when you endorse excessively the expectations of people rise way too higher than they should expect. This leads to pre-conceived notion in them about a particular contestant and each and every performance is observed under the microscope and anything less delivered than their expectations is immediately discarded and as it turns out the hopes hit the ground hard. If you take movies for instance, have you ever wondered why we had so many block busters in the 80s and early 90s and so few thereafter? The culprit is excess promotion. People come to know the story, script and even editing in some cases much before the movie is released. This pre-release information of the movie kills the thrill involved in it only and only because people expected it to be better and that's why we remember songs of some movies but not their names. One of the reasons attributed to the super success of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun was low profile and no promotion at all. Few years later, we had Hum Saath Saath Hain from the same production house and we all know the fate it met only and only because it was excessively promoted and people had very high expectations.
In Qazi's case, it worked out because he was liked not because of his singing abilities but for his histrionics and I'm sure had it been not a singing competition but a drama competition, someone else would have won the trophy. So, the same strategy need not work in the case of other contestants, especially II2 where you have fabulous singers. To promote excessively is nothing but suicidal for your favorite. As fans you might as well pretend not to have looked their flaws and vote for your favorites but people who hear them will not. You may not believe it now but later you will definitely. Please go ahead at the risk of your favorites!
