Idol 2: All eyes on Nakash

Amit Sawant
Indian Idol Abhijeet Sawant's cousin, Amit Sawant, was a participant in Idol 2. As reported earlier Amit assumed that like Abhijeet, he too could taste fame.

But his tryst proved to be unsuccessful as judges Anu Malik, Sonu Nigam and Farah Khan found him lukewarm.

But Amit's band mate, Nakash Aziz, has so far sailed through the rounds. He now hopes to make it to the final 12, which will be declared in on December 27.

College pals

Amit and Nakash met at Patkar College, Goregaon. Amit is in Class XII, while Nakash has to clear his TYBA exams.

Nakash Aziz
"It's strange," says Nakash, "that Amit bowed out in the first few rounds; he is an extremely good singer."

Their band is called Naxamite (formed from Nakash's pet name, Nax, and Amit) and jam on popular Bollywood tracks.

"I first met Amit during a singing contest in college," says Nakash. "We hit it off very well and decided to form a band. We have performed in college as well as outside. Both of us play the keyboards, and compose our own music," he says.

Sharp reply

Tonight's episode of Idol has Nakash belting out the Bheegi bheegi raaton track. Judge Malik points out a shortcoming about his singing style to which Nakash retorts that he felt he had sung it just right. Apparently, Sonu Nigam took objection to Nakash's comments.

"It was just a spur of the moment happening. The judges felt offended, but I apologised to them," he says. "I hope and pray that everything goes right and I make it to the last 12 participants."

Gift for dad

Being a finalist is important to Nakash, as it is his father, Naushad Aziz's birthday on December 27. "This will be my biggest gift to dad," he says.

"My father wanted to be a singer; he has struggled a lot. That I have made it so far in the Idol contest means a lot to him," says Nakash, who started training early. "My first guru was Suplab Saha and now I learn from Ustad Maqbool Hussain."

Nakash is sure he wants to seriously pursue music. "I want to do everything that involves music. I will start with singing and eventually turn to composing."
