Why aren't there any girl composers?

So this morning, I got a tweet from Viraf Patel aka Shiv from Mahi Way.
This is what he said: "why don't we seem 2 know of great music composer who is a woman ..is it biology ?"

So friends, I want your opinions on the reasonings behind this!

That is such an interesting question and thought. After reading your post, i sat and thought and thought and I couldnt think there are any female composers...That is so sad! Im sure there are talented composers out there, I wonder why there arent any in the industry.

Very interesting post indeed! Its most definitely not biology! Music composition takes immense amount of creativity and artistry. These qualities are not in scarcity in women. So it is not genes that we can blame, cuz women are quite capable!

But perhaps, it has something to do with our culture. The women in the old days maybe didn't get the opportunity to pursue this career cuz of our male-dominated industry. I admit that women did make fame in Bollywood back in the old days, but only as playback singers or actresses. They made fame in these areas because these areas NEEDED women. You couldn't have males play female roles in movies and you couldn't have male singers sing to match the female actresses' voices. So these two careers required females and its not as if these portions could have been given to males, but they chose to give to females. However, music direction is one occupation where the gender was not so specific. So here, the preference goes to male composers. i am not saying that they shooed away all female composers back in those days. but im saying that very few women would have taken the initiative and come up and say "i wanna compose" becuz as i said, the industry was so male-oriented. the movie directors, the music directors, the cameramen and etc. were all men, mostly. so less women came out and pursued this career cuz they saw no opportunity. but now its all changing. some women have composed music for some films. so hopefully, we will see a famous woman composer in the future.

The only two that come to mind are Usha Khanna and Sneha Kanwalkar. Female singers such as Shubha Mudgal and Lata Mangeshkar (or more recently, Shibani Kashyap) have composed for films, but they aren't 'music directors' proper.

Probably because not as many women have the inclination to be md's. Those who do want to be md's may find it hard to pursue producers for film projects. Also, producers may be biased against women...
