The fifth season is on. We check out what the previous Indian Idol winners are doing now
ABHIJEET SAWANT
The first Indian Idol was popular. Popular enough for the Shiv Sena to hope that he could be a youth icon for the party. But how has the 28-year-old's singing career fared since his win in 2005? Other than his contract album (awarded by Sony), Aapka Abhijeet, which did average business, Sawant has done little: one blink-and-miss number in the film Aashiq Banaya Aapne (2005), one album Junoon (2007) and a commercial in which he acted. Currently, he has no Bollywood offers or albums in his kitty. But Sawant is happy that he's "still getting offers from here and there". "People know me, recognize me and aspire to be like me. I am just concentrating on hosting the show. I am sure more work will follow," he says.
SANDEEP ACHARYA
He was the surprise winner of Indian Idol 2. The innocent smile of this Bikaner boy was said to have helped him win, besides his singing. But clearly, Acharya isn't smiling about his singing these days. "I always wanted to be a playback singer. It's taking some time. The struggle to make it big is still on," says the 25-year-old who thinks he's "halfway through now," as he's recording his second album with Sony BMG album (out later this year) after his contract album Mere Saath Sara Jahan flopped. He is currently "singing a few songs for some Bhojpuri films". Bollywood may not be such a distant dream as he recently recorded for Daboo Malik's Do Dil Ke Khel Mein, which releases later this year.
PRASHANT TAMANG
His victory was such an emotional event for fellow Gorkhas that it had caused a resurgence for the demand for Gorkhaland, and led to protests following an RJ's racist remarks against the Darjeeling boy. Almost three years on, the dust has settled. His contract album Dhanyavaad didn't do well. Tamang, 26, hasn't sung any Bollywood number, which he did with such energy in the competition and which is what he wanted to do. But after acting and singing in Nepali film Himmat-2 and now acting in another, untitled Nepali film, Tamang seems content. "It was never my ambition to be a playback singer, I was in the army before Indian Idol-3 happened. I am satisfied with whatever I have now," he says.
SOURABHEE DEBBARMA
When 24-year-old Debbarma "finally" became the first girl to win Indian Idol last year, she exclaimed, "I have broken all records". Now that her one-year contract with Sony, that included a flop album (Meherbaan) and stage shows, is over, Debbarma is readying for the "struggle". Bollywood is not on the to-do list for this Agartala student who wants to be a rockstar. She's in talks with music companies for an album but nothing's come through yet. "It's a struggle. I am still waiting for my chance," she says.
