And the flashback...he was thinking about how he tried to make her happy...if she was materialistic then she would have been happy with gifts and the like ...I think he remembered how he had done his best...and of course they would have had good times as a couple because he loved her...she most likely cheated...so that flashback was about that...ending with how it had all got stuck in a limbo with her accident!
