...though not exactly in that order šŸ˜†

Disclaimer: The Topic Maker for this post suffers from a severe case of Extrapolitis. That means she kinda looks too deeply and extrapolates too much on things that might not bear any significance in future, but it's fun so whatever 🤣

First off, I'm now addicted to the Humsafars bg! It keeps getting better episode after episode - yesterday's version had strains of guitar, piano and another string instrument I couldn't identify but it made the moon scene that much more captivating 😳 I love the fact that the music suits them both in different ways: it brings out the flowy dreamy quality that Aarzoo brings with her, yet there is a hint of tentativeness, hesitation, nervousness that doubtless Sahir may feel once he gets to the stage where he begins falling in love.

Mugs

Gossipgirlxoxo mentioned in this amazing thread (http://www.india-forums.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=4173410 I'm looking forward to this becoming a series!šŸ˜†) that the mugs in the moon scene were important for the colours chosen - Sahir's is an angry red, and Aarzoo's a soothing green. I'll add to this. Notice how Sahir's is red on the outside and green on the inside? It kinda supports an argument that Chaudhary sahab himself makes later. Confused? Worry not. I'll get there in a minute.

Moon

What love about this is the back-and-forth - between loyalty and abandonment, between trust and betrayal, between light and darkness...all for a piece of crater-filled rock swiveling hundreds of miles away from us 🤣 Both connect to it in some way. Both stop what they're doing just for a minute with it. Both converse with it as if it is a part of their lives. Both see it differently

For Aarzoo the moon is a constant, something that attests her belief that no matter how bad things get her faith can still be strong, that she will always find her solace in nature. For Sahir, the moon is a fair-weather friend; its light is not its own but a weak reflection of the sun, it hides in darkness, it hides behind the clouds. It's a reminder that nothing is constant and no love lasts forever.

Masks

What's most interesting is how he interprets the duality of the moon. The fact that it has two sides: the side that reflects sunlight, and the side that hides in the dark. Har khoobsurat chehray ke peechay, ke aur chehra hota hai, ek andhera hota hai, jise kisiney nahi dekha, jo kisika nahi hota.

I'll leave aside what this might indicate of his past, and focus on what this symbolizes. Sahir speaks of the brightness as a mask that hides the moon's darkness, the moon's secrets. Who better to speak of this than the man who now lives his life wearing a mask! His toughness, his ruthlessness, his stone-like demeanor hides the vulnerable man beneath. The man who looks back for a fraction of a second at the girl he just saved, the man who stops to gaze at the moon, the man who remembers betrayal with a tear in his eye that's easy to miss. Today he wears a mask so that no one will hurt him. It's no wonder that we see the mug as dual-coloured too -- he is green (vulnerable, elemental, fresh, bound to nature) on the inside, but is a ruthless red on the outside.

Compare this to Aarzoo's mug, which is fully green inside and out. If there is anyone in this serial who is the most comfortable in their skin, it is Aarzoo. Her hair is tousled and slightly messy, her clothes are baggy but comfortable, she doesn't feel the need to use jewellery, to accessorize because that isn't her. With Aarzoo, what you see is what you get and she's happy the way she is.

In the same topic that I'd just mentioned, Soaps1 suggested that very possibly the moon could be Sahir himself, hidden behind the dark clouds of his past. It is Aarzoo who will push those clouds aside and find the moonlight within. Just like the moon, Sahir, too, wears a mask that hides his pain, his honesty, his ability to care.

Fire

Sahir calls the moonlight pheeka. Yet it has the ability to bring him to tears and it is in the light of the moon that we see how affected he is by it. Minutes later, we see the same Sahir standing in front of a raging fire - a fire he had agree to set on a factory he wanted to destroy. He rejects suggestions of staying away and watches the factory turn to dust, almost transfixed. It's almost as if he wants to stay and watch it till the end. Is this indicative of a drive to get the job done? Is it yet another punishment another punishment he inflicts on himself? An exercise in desensitization?

The red, angry fire illuminates the mask he has on, the moonlight illuminates his truth.

Till the next episode!
