Loki's TV show is premiering from June 9 on Disney+ and Disney+Hotstar in India.
So I think it's a good time to talk about this character. Loki is considered the second best MCU villain after Thanos (excluding TV shows) by majority of MCU fans. Not really a big achievement because most MCU villains are not good enough in character development.
Loki got good character development because he has appeared in multiple films unlike other MCU villains who didn't return after one or two films.
When Loki first appeared in the first Thor film, audience liked him more than the titular character. Reasons were Tom Hiddleston being more good looking and a much better actor than Chris Hemsworth, along with Loki being a more interesting character than Thor.
Marvel didn't really know what to do with Thor's character until he got a soft reboot in Ragnarok, which sky rocketed his popularity since then among the audience.
Unlike Thor, audience loved Loki since the start and always wanted to see more of him. While him being an interesting villain is one thing, MCU movies and the fans gloss over all the shit he has done, specifically in the first Avengers where he was the main villain.
I honestly don't think he's a very layered character like his fans make him out to be. He's more or less a big jerk and there's nothing really deep about him. He wanted to become the king of Asgard in place of his brother in the first Thor film. His fans justify that by portraying him as a poor and misunderstood soul which is far from truth.
His motivations of joining Thanos and trying to conquer Earth in the first Avengers don't make complete sense. His atrocities in this film is justified by his fans by making up this head canon that he was in the influence of the mind stone.
He kind of redeemed himself in The Dark World only to again end up betraying his father and brother. He ONCE AGAIN redeemed himself in Ragnarok only to stupidly die in Infinity War. I'm saying stupidly because a smart character like Loki thinking that he could kill Thanos, to attack him like that never made sense. It's just lazy writing to kill off his character, only to bring him back from the dead for the THIRD time in his upcoming show.
So why is Loki such a popular character? He's funny and charming, but that doesn't completely explain him having such a huge fan base, which only leaves one reason that he's loved because he's played by Tom Hiddleston who is extremely good looking.
Otherwise it doesn't make any sense on why Captain Marvel is hated just for being arrogant, while a full-fledged villain like Loki is loved and glorified for being a jerk.
