Thinking of starting the show. Is it worth watching ?

PS : Love your username.

The BBC Pride & Prejudice was the best adaptation which remained true to the writing of Austen.

I love the show. It's well-acted, beautifully produced and the inner workings of the Royal Family can be quite fascinating. But I also understand it's not for everyone. It can get pretentious, and drag at times. Also, the cast changes every 2 seasons, so that could be a bummer if you get too invested in them.

But all in all, I think it's worth watching. I would say give it a try, and I mean stick beyond a couple of episodes and it will grow on you. Claire Foy is wonderful as the young queen and John Lithgow simply kills it as Churchill. Matt Smith is good too, and Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret is a revelation.

S3 and S4 have all seasoned actors- Olivia Coleman, Tobias Menzies, Helena Bonham Carter. It's a lavish production, and the drama is sooo engaging. I loved S1 and 2, 3 dragged a bit, but 4 might be my favorite season yet. Princess Di! And Maggie Thatcher!!

And yes, I agree BBC P&P is the true purists' version of P&P, though I love this story and have watched every cheesy reiteration of it including Bride & Prejudice and Lizzie Bennet Diaries!

Can you tell I love Darcy? 😆

So glad I found this post. Just finished binging on S4 and I'm just dying to discuss it with someone. But as you said, this series is not for everyone and no one I know watches it 😂

I love your assessment of the series. Claire Foy was simply amazing and I absolutely loved the portrayal of Churchill. But it is Vanessa Kirby who owns my heart. I have fallen in love with Princess Margaret. All the episodes that focused on her are my favourites.

Ah but this season! I loved Emma Corrin. She has just done an incredible job as Princess Diana. I'm so amazed that she even got her body language right. She really held her own among those seasoned actors.

Which were your favourite scenes?

I'm also delighted to find we share an appreciation for Mr. Darcy.

I agree about Vanessa Kirby. She killed it and I loved her portrayal of Princess Margaret. I also love Matthew Goode who plays Tony Armstrong- Jones and their chemistry was just super! Although HBC is a fantastic actress, I’m not able to see anyone other than Vanessa as Margaret. Again, Olivia Coleman is a brilliant actress but i have seen most people prefer Foy’s version of the queen though you have to remember it is a different era and she’s older and now having grown into the role as queen also would behave differently.

I also agree 100% about Emma Corrin as Princess Di. I actually was skeptical about the casting since Diana was so iconic and anyone playing her would have huge shoes to fill. Also, with the formidable Gillian Anderson as Maggie Thatcher, I was expecting that anyone else would get chewed up. But I was proved wrong. Although I liked Anderson’s Thatcher I didn’t warm to her as much as I did to Emma. She was wonderful and captured her mannerisms, like you said, to a T. I also love Josh O’Connor’s portrayal of Charles, he succeeded in making me hate him!

My favorite scenes: hmm let’s see, there are many but the ones that stand out involve Diana.

I adored the scene where she goes stalking with Phillip and how quietly assertive she is while also being polite. So charmingly irresistible! Makes me wonder what Charles saw in Camilla over Diana!
I also loved this one shot where the paparazzi are following her and she’s walking away with this demure, yet pleased smile which is almost a smirk. It is so subtle you can almost miss it, but it tells you that Diana is not such an innocent and that she’s enjoying the attention.
Another scene I loved was with her and the Queen where she pleads with her and hugs her. It broke my heart when the Queen does not return her hug. It brought out the fact that Diana was really very lonely and alone in the marriage.
I liked all scenes with Thatcher and the Queen- two formidable actors and women. But I have to say although I love Gillian Anderson as an actress I wasn’t able to warm to her portrayal of Thatcher as much. Maybe it’s because of the personality that Thatcher was- aloof, cold and somewhat unlikeable. Or maybe it’s because a certain young actress stole away my heart with her take on the world’s most iconic and loved woman in recent times.
When she hugged that child with AIDS, I was overcome with emotion. Emma Corrin is truly a star!

P.S: Hi-five for Darcy! And is that Jude Law on your DP?

Ah yes.. Matthew Goode killed it as Tony. I have always loved him. But his portrayal of Tony was just perfect. Even when you know the tragic end of their relationship, you still can't help rooting for him to get the princess. My favourite episode in the whole series is S2e4 Beryl. I rather felt like Princess M in that episode. Immensely infatuated. Albeit with both the actors. And you're right about Helena.. I couldn't quite accept her as Margaret.

Foy was just brilliant as the queen but I equally enjoyed Coleman's portrayal. I think the Aberfan episode was absolutely brilliant in S3.

Emma Corrin did come as a surprise. I was going on and on about how she would spoil this season to anyone who was willing to listen. But man was I wrong. You're so right about Josh. He did a magnificent job. I was surprised that the series decided to take such an unsympathetic attitude towards Prince Charles. At least last season I could tell myself that you can't help who you love and feel sorry for Charles. But man, do I dislike him now. I would hate to see him as King. Long live the Queen.

The series made me go on a hunt online for Charles and Diana's interviews together and now I can see how unhappy they were from the beginning. It was such a disaster from the very beginning and I love that that was depicted in the show.

I agree with your favourite picks. Emma just stole this season. Thatcher was great too. But I was watching all episodes, hoping they'd just show Diana more.

Yes. I'm a HUGE Jude Law fan. I love him so much it's just embarrassing at this point 😂😂

Which other shows do you watch?

Ooooh hi-5 for Matthew Goode. He is simply too ‘goode’! And yummy to boot! 😳
And yeah, the Aberfan episode was fabulous. I’m so glad there’s someone who loves Coleman’s Queen at least as much as Foy’s. I have loved Olivia Coleman ever since I first saw her in Broadchurch and will swallow anything she’s in. So I absolutely had no problems with her playing the Queen. In fact, I rather loved the casting choice and will miss her on S5 and 6, though Imelda Staunton is pretty good too so we’ll see how she does. About Diana, I was actually stoked when I heard Elizabeth Debicki would be playing her and was more excited about watching S5 thinking I would ‘tolerate’ this Emma Corrin for one season. But oh boy, she has me wishing she would keep playing Diana in future seasons. Same goes for Charles. I totally sympathized with him in S3 and felt sorry for him too, but he was such a hypocrite this season! And so resentful and entitled! I hated how he put Andrew down too on his wedding day!
I think overall it was pretty shameful how they all treated Diana. Though I did think they could have dwelt a little more on some happy moments, they made it look like the marriage was doomed from the start. Charles did give up Camilla and they seemed happy for a while at least.
I also wish they had dwelt on Diana’s friendship with Fergie. They made it seem like she had no friends in the family and I have read the two women were good friends and confidantes. It would have been interesting to see more of Fergie, she too was a colourful personality.

Other shows I watch: Hmm well, I watch whatever catches my fancy. I’m pretty easy to please like that! 😳
Some shows I have watched recently:

Sex education

Dark

Lovesick

Schitt’s Creek (still watching on S6)

Some others I have enjoyed:

Broadchurch

Downton Abbey

Luther

House M.D.

Homeland

Sherlock

I generally seem to prefer British shows; they’re shorter and easier to get through.
What about you?

Ohh and about Jude Law- don’t be embarrassed! I get like that about my favs too! 😳
