It can, if it is good.

The hype for the movie is unlike I have ever seen before. Its everywhere, every damn thing you see is talking one thing i.e Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It had already done comfortably over a 100 million in pre-sales across the globe a month back. (Destroying the previous record by 6 times for IMAX, 10 for AMC and 8 for Fandangos; here in the US)

Avatar had the wow factor. People wanted to have this new experience called 3D. If you think about it it, its the same here too.

Its a space adventure with characters that have dominated pop culture for over 30 years. Combine the nostalgia and the 3D IMAX novelty and you have something unique on your hands. How many times have you seen Star Wars, the biggest franchise there is in IMAX?? and when was the last time you saw Star Wars??

China will play a huge factor too. They love blockbusters and what is bigger than a rightly done Star Wars.

I think it will hit a billion before the 1st of Jan. And as X-mas movies have huge legs, it has a great shot as de-throning Avatar.

But only and only if it is good.

Not worldwide
Not big enough action scenes
Too many old nostalgia characters hence casual moviegoers would stay away
Domestic maybe

Avatar didn't have as much hype, just 75 million opening weekend. Certainly nowhere near as much as TFA. It is currently poised to set the all time opening record, beating that of JW (210 million) in December, December. It is insane when you think about it. No movie no matter how big was even in consideration to do this in the Christmas period. Nobody even for a fraction of a second though that Avatar could do such a thing, not even with the Hobbit last year. Pre Christmas movies don't open big.

Avatar had colossal legs though. It went on and on after its release. Thats why I said if TFA is good it will beat the record. I expect it to hit a billion come the 1st of Jan. Also it has zero competition till Kung Fu Panda which comes out the 1st of February I think. That mean a Month to dominate at the top of BO.

Also China will play a huge role in this. I am expecting it to do really well over there. They are crazy for major blockbusters and it ain't getting bigger than Star Wars. Its going to be a juggernaut there.

^ the revenant and hatefull eight are also releasing 1 week after starwars, and those two trailers have also created some +ve buzz so they'll definitely take some chunk but yes starwar will easily top the Domestic bo chart atleast until kungfupanda/zoolander2 whichever is earlier. Overseas will be interesting though, I still feel it will not top Avatar's overseas

Nah, The Revenant and Hateful 8 will not impact it. There is a select audience for them and the main movie-goer will definitely prefer Star Wars. They are certainly not getting many IMAX screens from SW. Its the movie to see on Holidays with you family and its Christmas Holiday period when those two will come out.

You are right about Kung Fu Panda, although I think if good TFA has a pretty good chance of topping that as well domestically. If good being the key word. Nov-Jan movies unless huge blockbusters don't open big. Zoolander I think it will beat easily. Anyway which way it has great window till Deadpool on the the of Feb. I don't see it dropping out of top three till then and top 5 till the end of feb.

Recently I was reading an article about how long can TFA stay at the top of box-office domestically and they said for sure till Kung Fu Panda and it has a very good chance(if the movie is great) to hold on even until dead-pool on the 12th Feb.

As for overseas, lets wait and see. I feel it has a very good shot at topping Avatar. And about time too, somebody has to take that movie from the top of the list; its not worthy of the spot. If its not good though then it will fall short.

Yes those movies are for niche demographics, but i just mentioned those cos, I feel those are the only movies that can take 'some' chunck out of TFA force not Impact. My guess is those two combine will have domestic OW of minimum 30+m and if Good (which am confident it will) both will take 100+ lifetime. The rest maybe some surprise hits of other movies in Jan till KunfuP comes. But hell yeah, to be Precise it'l still be in Top 2 until Deadpool & Zoo arrive. And if those are the only two sort of big release in Feb then defo Top 5 is easy peasy for TFA
