It is neither Rishi, nor Indira;or Rati,or Sumit, who are to be blamed and mocked at.It is the script, and the writer, who needs all speculation, and judgement. The quality of casting, performance, camera angles, sound track, locations, editing, wardrobe, all of these play their part in making the difference between good and bad nature of television drama. But the most fundamental question remain unasked. It is the primacy of the script in theory, and the significance of the story and an appropriate method of telling it.What is it then that makes a story worth telling? What is it that makes some television drama more meaningful and memorable than the rest? And the most meaningful and memorable drama has a metaphoric thrust that reaches beyond itself and presents a whole way of life in microcosm;synthesizes common experiences. And television drama should be judged according to its scope, depth, integrity, relevance;whether it presents full-blooded and believable characters in credible situations. It is the writer's input, which is most fundamental in creating drama, despite the essential importance of director, actors, location, etc.Drama is decisively shaped by the richness of the writer's life experience and by the degree to which he/she creatively assimilate the knowledge, the most basic emotions. And back to our show 'Hitler Didi',we need to see the writer's perspective into real life;and the way she is telling the story.
The writer of 'HD' has started off with a simple theme-about a young woman, whose life revolves round her family and her dreams and aspirations are somewhere lost. The protagonist,Indira,is in midst of a big family, yet she is haunted by loneliness;she loves everyone in the family, but she is not loved in return. The theme involves an exploration of family relationships-ties of blood and calls from the outside. And in this pursuit for a better life, pursuit for happiness,Rishi, another lead character opposite Indira is drawn, whose presence illuminates the darkness in Indira's life.Till this point the story runs smooth, giving us pleasure and happiness. But all of a sudden, there is a drift in the sequence of events;the script written around these characters become loose;there is no sufficient reason for anything to happen;no sense of adequate motivation for any relationships formed,or course of action pursued. An abrupt chain of events stars following, starting with the trial,Rishi and Indira's unexpected union,Indira's unconvincing transformation, and latest,Rishi 's unmeaningful kidnapping, and repetition of the incident, without a logical solution. Thus, the misery in both Indira's and Rishi's life, the uncalled unevenness in the story, unexpected arrival of a new character Sumer, and his involvement with Indira(which most of you're presuming),the unconvincing suspense, and irrational behavior of Indira(as some of you've pointed out-her expression after watching the video of Rishi being tortured;or her closeness with Sumer in the room, where they were alone, printing the films)-all these are created by the writer, and she solely should be the one,who should be judged, nor the director, neither the actors,or their characters. It is true that whether it be a novel,or a television drama,we ought to get involved with them emotionally;we, somewhere find some similarities between them and us;thus, their pain becomes our;we laugh with them, cry with them, and even fall in love with them. And it is this emotional connection that keeps them alive within us as long as we live;which is why no one can forget Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet,or Sarat Chandra's Paro and Devdas;or Raj and Simran of 'DDLJ';or Erich Segal's Matthew and Silvia(of ONLY LOVE),and innumerable such creations. And analyzing all these point,we cannot deny that Indira and Rishi are the crown of Illa Bedi's creation, who have won our hearts;we've emotionally connected with her characters, which is the reason we feel so much for them. Now it is upto the writer to either let her creation leave a mark in our hearts for times to come,or totally erase them with bitterness and disgust.
It is therefore,a request to all of you, irrespective of your tastes, whether you love the characters Indira,or Rishi;whether you're an admirer of Rati's acting,or Sumit's,don't let your emotions spoil the special space that you have for them.If at all you want to criticize, than criticize the writer's inability to balance th story-line,her inability to hold the story together;her inability to keep the integrity of the characters Rishi and Indira.Because true criticism is to analyze a work to the point of discovering the principle underlying its composition.;don't look for what is interesting in 'Hitler Didi', but for the principle that made it what it is:and the principle is Indira and Rishi's love;the very reason-the chemistry that made us all fall for it. So,stop such opinions, where some are insulting Sumit, the actor;or some, who are pointing fingers at Indira, the character.Whether you'll say it loud,or not;it is the magic of both Rati and Sumit's on-screen chemistry that pulled us all into the story, and brought us together. And it would be a illogical point to think that had it been some other actor in the place of Sumit Vats, who would have acted better(which many are of the opinion).Because if we keep on assuming than we can say that,'HD' would have been better had it been written by someone else;etc. The fact remains that,it is Sumit Vat's acting that brought out the character Rishi so fully;a fact that,Illa Bedi has written the story, and that is it.There will always be individual difference, always be a difference in taste of accepting any form of art, whether it be a television drama. But inspite of our differences in taste,we share our likings at some,or the other point.Whether we like Rati's acting.or not;whether we like Sumit's acting,or not,we're all longing for Indira and Rishi to be united. And this is all that matters;and this is what brings us together. So,dear forum members,if you'll think my points are valid, and is justified, than please, stop fighting over your personal choice of actors, and show respect towards each others' emotions, and respect towards the actors,Rati and Sumit, who are working so hard for us;to win our hearts,to entertain us.And as far as the story-line of 'HD' is concerned,it can only be changed if the writer honors her work and stops the commercialization of her creativity to such an extent that, she executes her own creation with her own hands. The commercial limit should be overstepped,so that the highest prestige can be attained by keeping the audience in constant touch with the highest achievements of dramatic art;by keeping the integrity of characters intact, and letting them be who they are loved and appreciated for. This is all I have to say regarding the present condition of the story of "HD", and the unrest it has given rise to in the audience.Hope my view would help bringing some change in your thoughts.Do share your opinions.
