What defines chemistry?

This topic has come up many times and it appears we have different definition of chemistry. I thought perhaps it would be a good idea to discuss this issue more openly and see if some sort of consensus builds.

For some the pre-requiste for chemistry is that the couple should look physically look good together.

For me it is whether the actors are able to light up the spark that defines their characters relationship. It is immaterial whether it is antagonistic relationship, or a friendly one or a potential lovers. Basically it is - Can the viewers love seeing the two characters engage with one another.

I feel yes. With Rishi and Indira, I can feel their relationship viscerally. I may or may not like SV's or RP's phyiscal attributes individually or together, but I "get" their relationship. Their chemistry makes me "get" their unspoken communication, read thousands of words into a one second gesture etc.

There are many "in your face example" as well as subtle examples of their chemistry.

One of me favorite of the former kind was right after their first confession when Rishi was asking for a kiss and saying " aur ye bakwas mein kiss ke sath karoon".
An example of subtle exhibition of their chemistry was in a recent episode where Indira has Mandira in her lap and is comforting her. We have Rishi looking in from the window of the room. Indira has her back to him, but it is as if she senses his presence and unwillingly is getting comfort from it. We get Rishi's pain at Indira's pain. No one spoke anything. The scene lasted less than a minute. But so much was communicated.

There are some physical attributes of both Rati Pandey and Sumit Vats that I really, really dislike. But such is their talent, and the talent of CVs that I am forced to look past the unsavory bits and fall in love with the characters and their story. That is chemistry for me

Humphery Bogart was really challenged in the looks department. But he had excellent chemsitry with some of the most beautiful women in hollywood in those days - Lauren Bacall and Ingrid Bergman. Who can forget Casablanca! In recent past we have Woody Allen with Diane Keaton and Mia Farrow.

So for me, looks are important, but more so the characters and how they mesh with one another. That is chemistry

Please feel free to define what you think of is "chemistry"

I think chemistry is more of a qualitative thing than quantity...like its different to put the finger on a scene or a physical attribute either and say...yes I see chemistry...naah...that doesn't happen...you just feel it...

for example take srk-kajol...I really like seeing them together, whether on screen or in interviews or in photoshoots. I guess we can never cansay what exactly made us like them together...but there is something there...the X factor or the WoW factor...Same thing was there in Amitabh and Rekha...Madhuri and Anil Kapoor...

Coming to the subtle chemistry bit I had also liked Vidya Balan and Naseer Sahab's chesmitry in ishqiya, Ranbeer and Konkona in WUS...mainly because they understood their characters well and were very easy around each other portraying their emotions... it looked very nice...and whenever i am in a pensive mood i remember those moments...like ranbir konkona in iktara song and vidya naseer sahab looking at each other in DTBHJ song...

See I think there are two types of chemistry...the on your face one...and the subtle ones...though I can't explain either...coming to whether Inshi have it or not? I don't think they have brilliant chemistry but decent enough for me to understand their scenes but somewhere the Wow factor is missing...or i don't remember them in my pensive moments neither do I feel excited about them...But yes it does pain me to think what will happen if these two were to be separated...I feel a strange desperation...

So I would say inshi have decent chemistry enough to make me wish they don't get separated...

@ TM and Rinky well said 👏

About chemistry i want to repeat Rinky's post😃

about INSHI chemistry:

I never felt connected with INSHI love story the blame goes to CVs for not handling it well...
i always felt there love as friendship...

i am able to connect to them and see them as friends but not as couple who are in love..

until unless Rishi claims he loves Indira, i never felt he is doing all this help for Indira out of love but felt as out of friendship.

INSHI chemistry convinced me to say they are good friends but not a couple in love

inshi have decent chemistry ,that x factor, spark is missing which were present in maynk-nupur chemistry(not comparing), but their chemistry is enough to make me wish they don't get separated.
becuase now their chemistry depneds mostly on writers ,how they will blossom their chemistry.till now i feel 60-40 friendship and love.
for chemistry it's very important they should understand each other, some times without saying anythng they understand each other.but here i some time feel inshi dont know each other properly(from both side, credit goes to writers).Like in mayunk nupur ,they also misunderstood each other but still they came across everythng, bcs they have a strong love fr each other which helped them to be together.
but here that love is missing.but i really hope that would come if cvs handle their love story sensitively, till now we only saw rishi helping indira but that love which will bind two people which will bring them closer instead of every differneces...still not blossemed between them.
but i wholeheartedly wish they dont get separated,i want their love which is now in root level, grow stronger and bring them together for ever.

i would like to elaborate on the point preethi made...I think Inshi was not developed properly and there was a huge leap...

suddenly we saw rishi professing his love to/for indu...when did he fall in love? what made him fall in love? all were lost...and am still not convinced if indira really loves him or not...

or maybe it was just two people who had no one trying to hold on to the other? but if it is so...the cvs should have concentrated on that as well...cvs of hd dont know how to develop emotional moments and ties...its too fast and has too much twists and turns...
