CHAPTER 6
Alex was whistling as she entered the house. She was in a good mood. She had gotten an E in her written exam and she was sure she did her practical exam well.
"Hey James!" she said, "Where is Sirius?" she asked automatically. She did not know why. It just popped in her head.
"Sirius?" asked James as he was surprised that Alex should actually ask such a question, "I think he is with Ida."
"Ida? The tramp?"
"No… the next door neighbor." He said, thinking that Alex had really made a mistake. Alex rolled her eyes and went to get herself some milk.
"Is that why he wasn't there to pick me up today?"
"I don't think that is why he wasn't there. He didn't come because you told him not to show his face there after he flirted with your teacher."
"Right!" she said remembering, "He needn't have taken it so seriously you know!" she muttered grudgingly.
"What can you say? He is Sirius after all!" said James chuckling at his own bad joke. Alex smiled at the typical James who was fascinated by the muggle crosswords and was trying to solve one that had come in the newspaper. She sat down on the couch, exhausted and casually asking James,
"How long has he been there?"
"Where?"
"With Ida!" she said as patiently as she could.
"Dunno… half an hour I guess!"
Alex frowned and closed her eyes. She looked at the clock after some time. 45 minutes! How long can Sirius and that tramp with war-paint on her face and bottles of scent broken all over her talk?
Alex got up and went over to the next door garden where she could see then sitting on the grass and talking. Sirius had his flirting face on and was in his attractive best. She walked over to them. There she was. Ida. She wore all these mini skirts and these mini tops which really needn't be worn at all. And the make up on her face? She might have as well had cake icing on. That thick! The smell of her scent reached till the gate. Scents always made Alex feel dizzy. She practically held her breath all the way down. One look at Ida could tell you she was the one-date girl Sirius would pick out.
"Hi Sirius!" she said in an unnecessarily loud voice. Sirius got the point but grinned at her.
"Hey Alex. I don't think you have met Ida. Ida, this is Alex, Lily's cousin and Alex, this is Ida our neighbor."
"Hey Alex! Nice to meet you!" she said in a sickly sweet voice holding out her hand politely.
"The pleasure is mine!" said Alex in a voice that hinted the contrary. Turning to Sirius she said, "Sirius, we have work to do."
"Sirius was telling me what interesting jobs you both have!" said Ida.
"Interesting? We just finished categorizing 3 years of articles and now we have to file them date wise!" said Alex frustrated and looking at Ida and thinking, what kind of a girl would actually consider this interesting? Ida stared at them for a moment and then burst out laughing.
"You were so right Sirius! Alex has got a great sense of humor."
Alex turned to look at Sirius whose face had just relaxed and then realized the load of lies he would have told her. Ida was laughing and Sirius started laughing along with her. She pushed him lightly with her hand in a way she was also hanging on to him. Alex grabbed Sirius' hand.
"We'll meet up later and I will crack more jokes and you both can laugh. Now we really have work to do!" and marched out with him. Sirius turned back.
"See you tomorrow darling!" called Sirius over his shoulder. Alex dragged him along more roughly, not caring for his cries of protest.

"Lily! Lillyyyyyy!" yelled James.
"What?" she yelled back from the kitchen, "I am here!"
"Have you seen Sirius?"
"He is getting ready for a date with Ida!" she called back. Alex stopped in midair while washing a plate. Lily saw the sudden movement or the sudden lack of it and turned towards her questioningly.
"Date? Really? You mean like go over to her house and flirt some more?"
"No. I mean an actual date. Like go over to a coffee house or in his case out for dinner!"
"So they will be like… together?"
"Well, the meaning of date as far as I know hasn't changed so ya… they will be together!" said Lily looking at Alex like she was scrutinizing her. Lily looked like she wanted to say something more but decided to leave it at that. Alex did not say anything even when Sirius said a hurried and excited goodbye to them and left. Then she heard a thunder and looked up.
"It's going to rain!" she said.
"Ya… I had better bring the clothes inside!" said Lily. She made a move to go out but decided the better of it.
"James!" she called.
"Yes honey?"
"Can you get the clothes from outside? It is going to rain!" she said.
There was a pause. "Ok!"
"Now!"
There was a sound of James getting up and the door closing. Alex could see him pulling down clothes from the stand from the window as the kitchen over looked the backyard. Theirs and Ida's. It started to drizzle.
"Hey, Sirius can't go on a date now. It's raining!" she said sounding vaguely satisfied.
"Ya…" mused Lily looking out of the window, "he will figure out a way. He always does!"

It was 11 in the night and Sirius still hadn't returned. Alex was flipping channels impatiently and looking at the clock. The rain had gotten heavier. She wasn't worried about Sirius' safety as she knew at any danger Sirius could use magic. She was wondering where Sirius was. Probably with Ida. At some romantic hangout. Looking at the rain. Didn't he know they had work to do? Stupid guy!
The door opened softly and in came Sirius. Alex turned to glare at him and saw that he was drenched in the rain. He sat down on the couch and shook the water off his hair, sending droplets all over the room. Alex wiped those which fell on her. At the moment he reminded her of their first meeting. He looked dashing yet Alex wanted to scream at him.
"What happened?" she asked him in a voice so gentle that she was surprised it came out that way at all. He hadn't noticed her. She reached out and light flooded the room. He looked even more dashing if possible.
"Oh, Alex! It was awesome!" he said grinning. Alex nodded before adding coldly, "You have work you know!"
"I'll do that!" he said nonchalantly. He then got up to get some milk in the kitchen. James and Lily had heard the door open and come down to see what the matter was. They met with Sirius in the kitchen.
"Sirius? You came just now?" asked James.
"Yes!"
"Great date huh?" he asked grinning.
"No! Oh My God! She just went on and on and on about each and every boyfriend she had had and drove me crazy till the last minute!" he said in an exasperated voice. He then turned his head and saw Alex standing at the doorway with her arms folded and an amused expression on her face. He grinned at her sheepishly and added,
"Other than that it was fun…" She raised her eyebrow at him.
"All right! I admit it even to you Alex. It was THE worst date I have ever been on! I Can Not Stand HER!"
James laughed silently as Sirius continued looking at Alex.
"If you ever want to ask a girl out…"
"Why would I want to do that?" she asked mildly.
"Sorry, forgot you were a girl!" he said leaving Alex looking indignant. Sirius turned to James, "If you ever want to ask a girl out…"
"Why would he want to do that?" asked Lily defensively.
"Dunno… in case he wants to you know break it off with you…" continued Sirius not seeing the murderous look on Lily's face. Lily covered James ears with her hands.
"Don't fill his brains with that kind of stuff. Come on James darling, lets go away before he suggests anything more stupid!" said Lily glaring at Sirius and leading James up the stairs leaving Sirius and Alex alone in the kitchen. Alex walked over and brought out a towel. Sirius just got up to leave as she faced him.
"Gloat later Alex!" he groaned yawning. She didn't know what possessed her. She threw the towel on his head and ruffled his hair before walking hurriedly up the stairs. He looked after her with a smile and rubbed his hair with the towel. After a pause he called up the stairs,
"Goodnight!"
"Goodnight!"
Sirius smiled at the staircase oblivious to the fact that Alex was doing the same thing towards it.
