Why isn't Snape the Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher yet?
I have always found this odd, so I've tried to examine three of the most important angles here:
- Issue of Dumbledore's trust:
We are all aware that Snape was the only Death Eater who turned against Voldemort; he was the only person who risked becoming a spy against the Dark Side.
Dumbledore clearly trusts Snape as we have observed in the following instances:
- Snape was one of the teachers who guarded the Philosopher's Stone
- He tried to save Harry during that Quidditch Match jinx in Year 1
- Snape is a member of the Order of the Phoenix inspite of his Death Eater background.
- Snape was specially requested to tutor Harry in Occlumency
It is clear that in spite of his detestation for Harry, Snape would never intentionally try to kill him.
2. Issue of Qualifications
As Sirius mentions, even in his school days, Snape knew more about the dark arts than anyone in sixth year! This implies that he is obviously well qualified in the field.
Yet, even though Snape applies for the Defense Against the Dark Arts position every single year, he is rejected for teachers who are often useless and who have no knowledge whatsover (with the exception of Lupin)
3. Issue with Moral character
Little is known about Snape's background. We only got to know more about him in OoTP when Harry accidentaly sees his worst memories.
- Snape had 2 parents and a sister.
- His family is pureblood and deeply rooted in the Dark Arts. Hence, he develops a prejudice against Muggle families (Mudbloods)...Remember how he calls Lily a mudblood?
- From the beginning, we can guess that he is part of a dysfunctional home - his father and mother had blazing rows and as a child, Snape was scared and lonely
- He had a good relationship with his sister (possibly). We remember from a fragment of the memory that a girl was laughing at Snape when he tried to ride a broomstick. This is still arguable as she may be mocking him as well...the way the Dursley's mock Harry
- He was an outcast in School and was always bullied by the Marauders (for no reason whatsoever at times)
It could be argued that Snape is not really a bad guy. He's just had a very bad childhood and his school life wasn't any better. He did join the dark side, but he returned again which implies that his heart is in the right place.
QUESTION: In spite of all this, why isn't Snape chosen to be a DADA teacher?
Your Thoughts and Opinions are most welcome!
